Additional actions you can take to protect your eyes include: Wear Sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays; wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation and lower your risk of cataracts and other eye damage. Limit Screen Time on digital devices can lead to eye strain. Take a break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Adjust your screen's brightness, text size, and contrast to make it eye-friendly. Regular Check-ups, including eye exams, can detect issues early when they're most treatable. Optometrists recommend adults have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years or more frequently if they have certain risk factors. When coupled with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking, each of these steps can contribute significantly to maintaining your eye health.

National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month seeks to raise awareness of how easy it is to become a victim during the busy holiday shopping season. Laws and technology have difficulty keeping up with the ingenuity of criminals. Identity theft and common theft are really, and regaining your reputation once you fall victim can take over a decade. Precautions include: Never let your card out of sight, including stores and restaurants. Carrying cards in a wallet that has RFID-blocking technology Not using exposed ATMs—opt for ATMs inside stores or banks Setting up bank alerts for all transactions on all your cards, credit and debit Shredding bank statements and papers with sensitive information Keeping passwords safe Not surrendering your national ID information number freely Taking the garbage out in the morning rather than the night before collections For example, many organizations ask your social security number on boilerplate forms in the United States. Only government entities, organizations paying you and withholding taxes, and creditors need it. If you're not applying for credit and the document or organization is not tied to government services or taxes—other organizations do not need your number. Leave the line for social security number blank, including job applications prior to an offer. It's none of their business until they are paying you. Particularly when traveling, never use a street ATM. Always use one inside a bank or within a hotel in view of the concierge. Unsupervised ATMs are prime targets for thieves who place recorders on the back and capture all passwords and card numbers. Then they wait about six to eight weeks and quickly drain your account in minutes. Bank alerts on debit and credit cards will allow you to catch this before too much damage occurs. It's inconvenient but not disastrous. You can take the above steps to help guard your identity, your money, and your future.

Prevent Blindness America sponsors Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month each December to help adults make the best decisions to keep the holiday season joyful for everyone. In 2010, the United States. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated that hospital emergency rooms across the country treated 251,700 toy-related injuries. Seventy-two percent of those injuries were to those under the age of 15. The following tips from Prevent Blindness will help you purchase toys your children will enjoy that will keep them safe. ELEVEN TIPS FOR PURCHASING SAFE TOYS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON 1) Make recommendations to family members and friends about appropriate gifts for your child. Be diligent about inspecting these gifts before allowing your child to play with them. 2) Inspect all toys before purchasing. Monitor toys your child has received as gifts to ensure they are appropriate for your child’s age and developmental level. 3) For younger children, avoid play sets with small magnets and make sure batteries are secured within the toy. Ingested magnets and batteries cause serious injury, and death can occur. 4) Gifts of sports equipment should always be accompanied by protective gear (such as a basketball along with eye goggles or a face guard with a new batting helmet for baseball or softball). 5) Any toy labeled “supervision required” must be used in the presence of an adult. Keep toys meant for older children away from younger ones. 6) Always save the warranties and directions for every toy. Include a gift receipt. Repair or throw away damaged toys. 7) Avoid toys that shoot or include parts that fly off. 8) Inspect toys for sturdiness. Your child’s toys should be durable, with no sharp edges or points, and the toys should also withstand impact. Dispose of plastic wrapping material immediately on toys as they may have sharp edges. 9) Don’t give toys with small parts to young children. Young kids tend to put things in their mouths, increasing the risk of choking. If any part of a toy can fit in a toilet paper roll, the toy is not appropriate for children under three. 10) Do not purchase toys with long strings or cords, especially for infants and young children, as these can become wrapped around a child’s neck. 11) Always dispose of deflated or broken balloons immediately. According to the CPSC, more children suffocated from these than any other toy.

National Guard Day (US)(1636): December 13

The National Guard is the oldest institution in the United States. It was the first militia regiment in North America, created on December 13, 1636, by the Massachusetts Bay Colony's General Court. It was organized into three permanent units to defend the colony better. Today, the descendants of these first regiments—the 181st Infantry, the 182nd Infantry, the 101st Field Artillery, and the 101st Engineer Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard—share the distinction of being the oldest units in the U.S. military. Most Americans know the National Guard through service or its deployment to assist with natural and manmade disasters. These include fighting fires, rescue, and infrastructure repair after tornados, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Assisting with civil unrest and providing extra manpower during health emergencies, including COVID-19, are other ways the National Guard helps keep Americans safe. Happy Birthday, National Guard. Champagne Day, Intl.: December 31

International Champagne Day is celebrated every year on New Year's Eve. Champagne is the traditional beverage used for toasting in the New Year. Champagne is a region of France, and only sparkling wines from this region are permitted to be called Champagne. The beverage was invented in the 1600s by Pierre Pérignon, a Benedictine monk of the Abby of Hautvillers. One of his duties at the Abby was to care for the wine cellars. Today we know him as Dom Pérignon. The original nickname of Champagne was 'Mad Wine,' so dubbed by Pérignon. The bubbles for which it is now known were not desirable, and they were downright aggravating to Pérignon, who was trying to produce good white wine! Good white wines don't have bubbles. In 1670 the monk developed the méthode champenoise. Pérignon spent 47 years caring for the wines of the Abby and, in that time, developed many of the pressing and fermenting processes still used today. Champagne would later become the preferred beverage of the elite and the universal symbol of congratulations and celebration. International Champagne Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.
