First coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation in a press release dated November 28, 2005, Cyber Monday has quickly become one of the primary benchmarks of overall retail health during the holiday shopping season.

National Fritters Day celebrates fried food made with meat or fruits. There are several types of patties. British fritters are mushy batter fried and usually contain savory items. American patties tend to be sweets, though crabcakes are the most popular form of American fritter. Asian fritters, common to the southern region, are closer to the British version and can resemble a Middle Eastern favorite, the falafel. Fritters are typical street food in Asia. Created by Colleen Page, National Mutt Day is one of two days a year celebrating mixed-breed dogs. A mutt is any dog that is not considered a pedigree, purebred or recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club and its international affiliations. Eighty percent of dogs found in shelters are mutts. This day originated in 2005 and occurs twice a year as a reminder to adopt from your shelter and make sure to get your dog spayed or neutered.

Saint Andrew's Day in Scotland commemorates the martyrdom of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, who was crucified on an X-shaped cross on November 30, 60AD. Scotland flies the Saltire flag on public buildings. The ceilidh, a traditional dance, is performed in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dumfries. Saint Andrew was the younger brother of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He was born in Bethesda on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, and he died in Patras, Greece. MARRIAGE WISHES For a young woman wishing to marry, this day holds special meaning. At midnight on November 30, hopeful brides pray for a future husband, peeling an apple as a continuous ribbon, then throwing it over her shoulder. The position of the peel when it lands determines the first letter of her future husband's name. Then she pours liquid candle wax into a bucket of water. As it cools, its form tells her of her future husband's profession. Scots proposed Saint Andrew's Day be a bank holiday in 2003. The St. Andrew's Day Bank Holiday Act of 2007 passed on November 29, 2006, and was given Royal Assent by the Crown on January 15, 2007. As of 2007, it is an annual bank holiday in Scotland. If November 30 falls on a weekend, the following Monday is the official state holiday. WHY SO MANY FEAST DAYS? Have you ever noticed that there seem to be feast days for just about everything in the Catholic and Orthodox Christian faiths? There is a reason for that. The church granted feast days to allow all subjects of the Crown to take a day off. As most worked six days a week, feast days provided a break that landowners and nobility couldn't deny. If they tried, they were going against the church, and that you did not do. In medieval times, there were approximately 60 feast days a year. Add this to 52 Sundays, Christmas, and Easter, and workers received a minimum of 114 days off a year. Contrast that to today. The average American gets 104 weekend days and seven national holidays off work. That's three days less than the commoners of the Dark Ages, just in case you're feeling a little overworked.

World Day of Slavery Abolition marks the anniversary of the December 2, 1807, act prohibiting the importation of slaves becoming federal law in the United States. It abolished the international slave trade in the United States but did not end the practice. Currently, the United Nations seeks to resolve the issue of slavery with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as its roadmap for stamping out the root causes of slavery and freeing all enslaved people in the world.

It's a day that honors and celebrates students with disabilities, their teachers, parents, and schools, and the progress they and we are making. This event first ran in 2004.

What do all these people have in common with Walter Plinge, George Spelvin, David Agnew, and Alan Smithee? They are all theater names, or pseudonyms, for uncast parts or when an actor wishes to hide his identity. The theater and entertainment worlds each have their superstitions and traditions. Walter Plinge is the London theater world's tradition. Sir Walter Plinge is said to have a ghost in residence at London's Imperial College Union Concert Hall. Walter Plinge Day honors this mythical thespian.

Be a Blessing Day: December 3

Be a Blessing Day honors The Bible/Tanakh verse Genesis/Bereishit 12:3. This day is about orchestrating your life to be a blessing to others, breaking down barriers, and forging unity between all mankind. This verse 12:3 explains a promise from God to Abram (Abraham/Ibrahim) for his obedience and faith.

The three great religions of The Book originate from Abram: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jesus Christ and the Prophet Mohammed are both descendants of Abram. All three faiths and their followers include this scripture in their books. The differences occur in the telling.

The Tanakh and Bible tend to narrate genealogy in this chapter. The Qur'an tells a narrative, or Sura, from a religious rather than genealogical perspective:

Tanakh version—Bereishit 12:3: "And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you."

Bible version—Genesis 12:3: "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Qur'an version—Surah An-Nisa 4:125: "And whose way of life could be better than that of he who submits his whole being to Allah, does good, and follows exclusively the way of Abraham whom Allah took for a friend?."

This event was first held in 2015.

E-Discovery Day is one of the largest national gatherings of legal professionals. It's a day that allows us to celebrate our increasingly important role as attorneys, litigators, e-discovery specialists, paralegals, and in-house counsel in the Legal GRC space. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Make a Gift Day can also be a day to do some good by giving money, time, or resources to your favorite charity.

Persons with Disabilities, International Day of: December 3

The United Nations International Day of Persons With Disabilities highlights the struggles and triumphs of 20% of the world's population. It is estimated that around one billion people live with some form of disability worldwide. The day aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic, and cultural life. The annual observance was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
