Catfish Month, Ntl.: August

06:20 AM | -
National Catfish Month occurs in August, championed by the US Catfish Institute. Farm-raised catfish have come a long way from their bottom-feeding ancestors. Catfish available today (fresh or frozen) are products of state-of-the-art methods of aquaculture. The fish thrive in clean freshwater ponds with surface-fed soybean, corn, fish meal, vitamins, and minerals. Farm-raised catfish not only furnish American consumers with a tasty delicacy, but the fish provide a nutritious, low-calorie, low in cholesterol source of protein.

Children's Eye Health & Safety Month: August

06:20 AM | -
Each August, Prevent Blindness America focuses on children's eye health and safety. Adults and children can easily protect their eyes by wearing the proper sunglasses and a brimmed hat. Children are more susceptible to UV damage than adults because they spend more time outside than adults. Here are some things parents can do to help protect children's eyes. Only purchase sunglasses with UV protection. Ensure the sunglasses fit the child's face and shield the eyes from all angles. Choose lenses that are impact-resistant and made of polycarbonate, never glass, unless prescribed by a doctor. Always insist that children wear a brimmed hat in conjunction with their sunglasses. Teaching children to protect their eyes is an essential early step toward a lifetime of healthy vision.

Children's Vision and Learning Month: August

06:20 AM | -
Children's eyes change as they grow. With 80% of learning requiring sight, Children's Vision and Learning Month was established in August to encourage parents to have their children's vision checked before the new year begins.

G-PACT supports these American families who fight against Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction (paralysis of the entire digestive tract), Gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach), and Colonic Inertia (paralysis of the colon) daily. It can also be the result of several significant chronic illnesses. These include Diabetes, Dysautonomia, Parkinson's Disease, Lupus, Scleroderma, Cancer, Mitochondrial Disease, Spinal Cord Paralysis, and Cystic Fibrosis. G-PACT is leading the fight against Digestive Tract Paralysis by pursuing various treatment options through multiple outlets. In 2009, G-PACT established August as Digestive Tract Paralysis Awareness Month to encompass our founding date, August 23, 2001. This month has become recognized nationally and internationally as the official month to recognize and increase awareness of these conditions.

Golf Month, Ntl.: August

06:20 AM | -
National Girlfriends' Day celebrates your BFF of the female kind. National Girlfriends' Day isn't a romantic or lesbian-queer-trans holiday; it celebrates the unique relationships women create when they bond together. Celebrations generally include spa trips, shopping trips, and wine tastings, the kind of stuff most men avoid like the plague (which is the idea). Even the Center for Disease Control has gotten into this day's spirit with several suggestions and health topics of particular importance to women: http://www.cdc.gov/features/girlfriendshealth/. However you celebrate, this day is all about you and the girls. No boys allowed.

Happiness Happens Month: August

06:20 AM | -
The Secret Society of Happy People champions August's Happiness Happens Month in the United States. The month began after the Society declared August 8 as Happiness Happens Day in 1999, and members requested to expand the celebrations to the month. "The purpose of the celebration is to encourage people to talk more about happiness and simply celebrate being happy," says Society Founder Pamela Gail Johnson. "Celebrating happiness doesn't mean you're never unhappy," says Pamela. "Life is a mixture of good and bad events and moments. Unfortunately, our culture glamorizes unhappiness more than it celebrates happiness." The Society sets one day aside to focus on activities, August 8. Promotions include social media, where Happy-a-Thon Ambassadors volunteer to send five happy social media messages that day. When they volunteer, they'll get a guide through ideas, sharing what makes them glad to encourage conversations. For more details, see the website at: http://www.sohp.com. Created in 2000.
