Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, began in 2002, taking inspiration from music festivals of the 60s and 70s like Woodstock. "Bonnaroo" is Creole slang for "a really good time." The festival lives up to its name. The lineup is exceptionally diverse, featuring multiple music genres, including rock, pop, hip-hop, country, bluegrass, jazz, electronic, and folk. Over the years, some of the biggest names in music have graced the Bonnaroo stages, from Elton John to Paul McCartney, from Eminem to Radiohead. Entering the festival site is like entering a different world. Thousands of tents are pitched on every available space, creating a colorful patchwork across the fields. The sense of community in these camps is incredible. Everyone is your friend at Bonnaroo. Multiple activities provide entertainment throughout the four days. There's the Comedy Tent if you want to catch some laughs and the Cinema Tent, where you can chill and watch some films. They even have yoga classes and a mini-parade! Bonnaroo features a fantastic array of food, including festival classics like burgers and pizzas, gourmet fare, vegan options, and everything in between. They also host a special Bonnaroo-themed beer. The festival's motto is "Radiate Positivity," precisely your mood throughout the event. Bourbon Day, Ntl. (1789): June 14

Bourbon Day marks the anniversary of the day Rev. Elijah Craig began distilling corn in Kentucky to produce bourbon in 1789. Bourbon is a 100% American invention, and the day is best celebrated neat or on the rocks. HISTORY OF BOURBON Bourbon's roots trace to the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the United States. The name "bourbon" comes from Bourbon County, a region in Kentucky at the time. Although the exact origins are undocumented, several key moments and people contributed to the development of bourbon as we know it today. In the late 1700s, European settlers (primarily of Scots-Irish and English descent) moved into the western frontier of the United States, including Kentucky, bringing knowledge of distilling, which they adapted to the local ingredients—corn, rye, and barley. The limestone-filtered water in the region also played an essential role in bourbon production. Elijah Craig, a Baptist minister, and distiller, is partly attributed to its creation. On June 14, 1789, he is said to have been the first to age whiskey in charred oak barrels, which imparted the distinct caramel and vanilla flavors characteristic of bourbon. This practice became a standard for bourbon production. Bourbon County is not necessarily the birthplace of the spirit; however, it was a significant center for whiskey production and trade in the early 19th century. Whiskeys from this region found distribution on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in barrels marked "Bourbon," and the name stuck. During the 1820s-1850s, bourbon production flourished, with many distilleries opening in Kentucky. The whiskey gained popularity in the southern United States and became known as a distinctly American spirit. The American Civil War disrupted bourbon production, as many distilleries were destroyed or repurposed for the war effort. Following the war, the bourbon industry recovered and grew again. The Bottled-in-Bond Act (1897) established strict regulations for producing and labeling "bonded" whiskey, including bourbon. To be labeled bottled-in-bond, a bourbon had to be made by a single distiller in a single distillation season, aged for at least four years in a government-bonded warehouse, and bottled at 100 proof (50 percent alcohol by volume) to ensure the quality and consistency of bourbon. Prohibition (1920-1933), created with the passage of the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Volstead Act, effectively shut down the legal production and sale of alcoholic beverages, including bourbon. Some distilleries were allowed to continue production for medicinal purposes, but overall, the bourbon industry suffered greatly. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the bourbon industry slowly recovered. During World War II, many distilleries were repurposed to produce industrial alcohol, bourbon production increased, and the spirit regained popularity in the post-war years. In the late 20th through the early 21st century, bourbon experienced a renaissance with the rise of craft distilleries and a renewed appreciation for the spirit's unique flavors and heritage. Bourbon has experienced increased global popularity, with enthusiasts enjoying its rich history and diverse flavors. Bourbon's history intertwines with the history of the United States and remains an iconic and beloved American spirit.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is sponsored each June by Bowel Cancer Australia. The purpose of the month is to raise public awareness of a disease that claims the lives of ten Australians every day. Bowel cancer is the second most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia, affecting men and women almost equally. It is Australia's second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. However, if found early, Bowel Cancer is one of the most curable types. Bowel Cancer Awareness Champions donate their time, services, and creativity. Many also kindly make monetary donations to support Bowel Cancer Australia's work.

Brain Injury Awareness Month (CA): June

The Brain Injury Association of Canada hosts National Brain Injury Awareness Month to increase public awareness of the effects and causes of brain injury in Canada. Brain injury in Canada is a silent epidemic and the number one killer and disabler of people under 44. Men are twice as likely to experience brain injury than women. Acquired brain injury is a non-degenerative and non-congenital impact on the brain that may result in a diminished or altered state of consciousness and impaired cognitive, physical, emotional, or behavioral functioning. The social, emotional, and economic consequences of brain injury are devastating not only to the survivors themselves but to family members, caregivers, support workers, and the community at large—anyone involved with working towards neuro-rehabilitation and recovery. There are currently no drugs or techniques that can cure a brain injury. Automobile accidents, sports injuries, cycling accidents, falls, strokes, tumors, aneurysms, and other non-degenerative conditions are all leading causes of acquired brain injury in Canada.

Bug Busting Day, Ntl. (UK): June 15

National Bug Busting Day occurs three times yearly in the United Kingdom: January, June, and October. It is a concentrated effort to stem the tide of lice infections within schools and the general population. Through the registered charity Community Hygiene Concern, the government teaches parents, educators, and pharmacists how to detect and stop the spread of head lice and provides affordable Bug Busting kits. The late Dr. RJ Donaldson started Community Bug Busting Days, affectionately known as Paddy. Dr. Donaldson demonstrated in the 1970s that an intensive detection/treatment campaign could dramatically cut the prevalence of head lice. He was the tireless mentor of the Bug Busting Days organized by Community Hygiene Concern, taking a personal interest from 1986 in our development of wet detection methods in preference to less effective dry or damp methods. Today Bug Busting Days are organized in partnership with the Department of Health. Lice are a big problem in schools. Once they infect an individual, these parasites can be very difficult to get rid of. The following are some facts: The eggs of head lice usually take seven to ten days to hatch. Combing dry or damp hair with a fine-tooth comb is not a reliable way to detect lice. Metal combs are unsuitable for louse detection because these combs are primarily nit combs. Lice caught between the tightly spaced teeth remains unnoticed against the metal and can be combed back into the hair unharmed at subsequent strokes. No studies prove that wet head lice grasp hairs more tightly, thus hampering their removal with a fine-tooth comb. There is no scientific proof that prolonged head-to-head is required to catch lice—close contact is enough. Head lice are a community problem. Approximately 20 percent of head lice cases occur in people over 16 or under four years old.

Bunker Hill Day (US-MA)(1775): June 17

The Battle of Bunker Hill occurred over three weeks during the Siege of Boston, before the Declaration of Independence in the American colonies and in the early days of the Revolutionary War. It began on June 17, 1775. The Americans were underrepresented and needed more ammunition. Because of this, the famous battle command "Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes" became part of American history. The British won the battle, though with high casualties. Its importance in American history remains in its impact on the colonists' morale. It proved they could fight the most powerful military in the world and hold their own. George Washington would take command of the colonial army three weeks later. Ultimately, the Americans would win the war, but it would take eight years to do it. Bunker Hill Day is a state holiday in Massachusetts.

Burns Awareness Month, Ntl. (AU): June

National Burns Awareness Month seeks to teach Australians burn prevention and the correct first aid treatment for burns. Winter is just beginning, which means increased use of candles, fireplaces, heaters, and ovens, not to mention hot water and other conveniences. Burns happen, but they happen less with precautions, and children (including adolescents) understand personal safety. Business Etiquette Week, Ntl.: June 7-13

I remember attending my first networking event as a salesperson in 1993 and was entirely overwhelmed by the idea. "What does networking mean?" I asked. "How do I do it, and is there a proper way to do it or not to do it?" Like most people, I rarely received answers to my questions, so I learned. Jumping in, making many mistakes, and finally researching proper etiquette for business. My fumbling in those first few years paid off. I was quite successful in media sales, and it was due to networking and following established protocols. What worked in the US, however, only sometimes works elsewhere. Business etiquette changes from nation to nation. My second lesson in business etiquette came through a friend who recently completed her Ph.D. in international diplomacy. To get LEEP Calendar off the ground, I took a good-paying job in the Middle East and spent a large percentage of my paycheck, weekends, and evenings building the company over four years. In the weeks leading up to my arrival later in the summer of 2014, I discovered how to "open mouth and insert foot" quite well. What exists as good manners in the United States sometimes fails to translate overseas. Now I'm learning business etiquette again, with a Middle Eastern flair. It is easy to offend inadvertently. What did I do? In my excitement and attempt to explain what I would be doing to Westerners, I worded it so that, upon reflection, coming from an American would seem arrogant and dismissive to another culture. "Laura, you are going to offend them with that statement," my friend, an expert in the culture, scolded me. "But, I was just trying to explain it so people here will understand it," I protested. I thought I was complimentary by being excited and simplifying my job role. It turns out it would be taken offensively. Americans have a reputation for being arrogant overseas, so a douse of humility goes a long way. "That's why you're in marketing and I'm in diplomacy!" she added. "You need to learn when to sell and when to respect." Aye, meu Deus! For anyone in business (or politics), knowing the proper protocols in a situation can mean the difference between success and failure. Etiquette exists to help us navigate various social situations successfully, even if we're unfamiliar with the culture, whether national or corporate. It provides us with a roadmap of acceptability that is familiar and respectful. Calcio Storico Fiorentino (IT): June 24

The Calcio Storico Fiorentino, often called Calcio Fiorentino, can be considered sport's answer to anger management. This traditional sport of Florence, Italy, dates back to the 16th century and combines soccer, rugby, and wrestling in an exciting, violent, and vibrant spectacle. It originated from the Roman sport of harpastum, which Roman generals used to keep legionnaires fit and in top fighting condition beginning in 59 BC. The game is played in the Piazza Santa Croce, on a field of sand, twice a year in June as part of the San Giovanni celebrations, honoring St. John the Baptist, the city's patron saint. Four teams represent the four quarters of the city: Santa Croce (Blue), Santo Spirito (White), Santa Maria Novella (Red), and San Giovanni (Green). Each team comprises 27 players. Once the players are on the field, a historic cannon fires to begin the match. The game's objective is to throw the ball over a designated spot on the opponent's side of the field. Players employ a free-for-all strategy of violence and technique, using any means necessary to achieve victory. A lack of rules leads to extreme scrambling, pushing, and tackling that would be considered illegal in most modern contact sports. The most famous game was held in 1530 during the siege of Florence, seen as an act of defiance against the attacking forces. Today, Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a source of immense local pride. The annual games draw large crowds, including a parade of participants dressed in historical costumes. The tournament winners are awarded a white calf, keeping with centuries of tradition. Call Your Doctor Day, Ntl.: June 9

It's time to schedule your annual health check-up if you still need to do it this year. Currently, 80 percent of Americans neglect to schedule preventative health measures like an annual exam, and that percentage is even higher for those under 40 (93 percent). National Call Your Doctor Day was established in 2016 to help people, especially women, remember to get in for that annual exam.

Camera Day, World (1888): June 29

Photography enthusiasts have a lot to celebrate on National Camera Day. Today is the anniversary of the first Kodak camera sold on June 29, 1888. The camera documents whatever is happening in the world. Before its invention, people relied on paintings, which were very expensive and viewable by a select group of people. Photography changed that. It documents day-to-day living quickly and reproduces readily. The camera is not a recent invention. Several cultures claim the invention of the camera. Ibn Yunus of Egypt is often cited in Western cultures as the inventor, sometime near 1000 AD. However, written documentation of pinhole style, or camera obscura, existed nearly 1400 years earlier, in 391 BC, according to Chinese records. Therein, Mozi writes of the process used in pinhole cameras to project an image. These early cameras, however, did not allow for the collection of an image, only its projection. That changed early in the nineteenth century. The first photograph was taken by Nicephore Niepce in 1814, and he recorded the image on silver chloride-coated paper. This prototype, however, was temporary. In 1827, he produced a more permanent photograph using a wooden camera developed by Charles and Vincent Chevalier. The first modern photograph was developed in 1836 by Louis Daguerre using a copper and silver mix plate coated with iodine vapor. George Eastman of the Kodak Company produced the first film camera. By the early 2000s, cameras became digitized, resulting in higher resolutions and more detailed photographs that are much more easily reproduced and shared. The addition of cameras to cellular phones has democratized photography for the world.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer over a lifetime; 13 million Americans live with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer, and nearly 800,000 Americans live with a history of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is a chiefly lifestyle disease and is highly preventable. The most common cause is exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
