Ivan Župa from Croatia creates World Handshake Day. Here is how he describes his motivation for this day (Edited for grammar and clarity): "When I was a little boy, I grew up in Croatia, near the Adriatic sea city of Split. One day I met an old man on the shore who told me the following words: 'My son, place your hand in the sea and you are united with the whole world.' Now, at the age of 66, I would like to help fulfill the vision of this old man by creating World Handshake Day. Place your hand in the sea and shake hands with the whole world, feel united. By demonstrating this simple gesture of shaking our hands, we can help fulfill the vision of many nations and the wise old man. Take away the fear of those that have been so terribly affected by emergencies or natural disasters. Let the world come and help them." Ivan Župa

Hate Speech, International Day for Countering: June 18

Hate speech, amplified by new technologies of communication, has become a prevalent method for spreading divisive ideologies globally. Its unchecked spread can disrupt peace, development, and human rights. In response to increasing trends of xenophobia, racism, and intolerance worldwide, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech on 18 June 2019. This plan defines hate speech as any communication that attacks or uses derogatory or discriminatory language towards a person or group based on aspects of their identity such as religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, color, descent, gender or other identity factors. There is, however, no universal definition of hate speech under international human rights law, and its concept is still being debated, especially concerning the freedom of opinion and expression, non-discrimination, and equality. Education plays a critical role in preventing hate speech, especially in online environments. Digital literacy and global citizenship education are key in equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to identify and counteract hate speech. The United Nations campaign #NoToHate provides information on how to address hate speech. In July 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech, calling for increased efforts to address this phenomenon. The resolution also proclaimed 18 June as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, inviting governments, international organizations, civil society groups, and individuals to promote strategies for countering hate speech.

Heimlich Maneuver Day, Intl.(1974): June 1

The Heimlich Maneuver was introduced via the Emergency Medicine Journal on June 1, 1974, by a thoracic surgeon and medical innovator, Dr. Henry Heimlich. Though Dr. Heimlich passed away in 2016, Heimlich Heroes continues sharing the importance of his life-saving technique. The Heimlich Maneuver involves using abdominal thrusts to force air from the lungs to expel an object on which someone is choking. Since Dr. Heimlich developed the maneuver, it has saved an estimated 100,000 lives worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, choking is the fifth leading cause of unintentional death in the United States. Heimlich Heroes’ mission is to end these preventable choking deaths.

Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month: June

Eight infants a day are diagnosed with hip dysplasia in Australia. Despite this, the likelihood of a parent being aware of the condition is only 57 percent. This limited awareness contributes to the rising number of those diagnosed late with this potentially life-changing condition. Hip dysplasia, or developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), occurs when the ball and socket do not fit together in their 'normal' position. Sometimes this is due to abnormal development and lack of hip joint growth. It can result in months — and sometimes years — of medical treatment. Left undiagnosed, it's one of the leading causes of early-onset arthritis of the hip and, possibly, the need for a hip replacement; it is a significant public health issue. Treatment is optimized when diagnosis occurs within the first three months of life. During International Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month, parents and parents-to-be are urged to educate themselves about the risk factors for and potential signs of hip dysplasia, and to ensure their children's hips are checked not only at birth but at 1-4 weeks, 6-8 weeks, 6-9 months, 12-months, and then at regular health reviews until 3.5 years of age.

History Day Competition, Ntl.: June 14-18

History Day is a competition that begins in May. It was created in 1974 "to counter the devaluation of history as a field of study." Students present their research, analysis, and conclusions in one of five formats: a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. The contest is open to students in junior high and high school. Each year a theme is released, and students and teachers then choose a topic within that theme. Approximately 500,000 students enter annually, and around 2,500 make it to the finals. About 100 participants receive awards ranging from $500 to $2000 in winning categories. Most Americans are unaware that we do not study history in the United States in K-12. We learn social studies. Social studies focus on when, who, and what the event's impact on society, the contributions of individuals, and stories. History includes the why and context of the period it occurred. It requires critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to look at events, trends, and the larger picture dispassionately and absent from current political pressures or trends. Whereas social studies are more about sociology and culture, history is closer to science in its analytical approach to information.

HIV Long-term Survivors Day (1981): June 5

On June 5, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control described a new disease that seemed to attack gay men. That disease would eventually be called AIDS, and the virus was identified in 1985 as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. During its first few years, AIDS and HIV were virtual death sentences for anyone who caught it. Over 39 million people worldwide have died from the disease. By the early 1990s, treatments began to create longevity, and the number of people killed by the virus declined. Today, a high percentage of those who contract the disease survive and live long and happy lives. Today, nearly 37 million people live with the disease. HIV Long-term Survivors Day celebrates those who continue to battle HIV but have survived. Created by Tea Anderson in 2014, it is supported by several governmental and NGO organizations worldwide.
