Dialogue Among Civilizations, Intl. Day for: June 10

06:20 AM | -
PROMOTING PEACE BETWEEN CIVILIZATIONS: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DIALOGUE AMONG CIVILIANS The International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, observed annually on June 10, aims to promote mutual understanding, tolerance, and cooperation among people of different civilizations. The day encourages dialogue to bridge cultural and civilizational divides, fostering a culture of peace and coexistence. Objectives of the day include: Promote Mutual Understanding Foster understanding and respect among diverse cultures and civilizations. Encourage Dialogue Encourage open and constructive dialogue to address common challenges and conflicts. Enhance Cooperation Promote cooperation and collaboration among different civilizations to build a peaceful world. Highlight Cultural Diversity Celebrate cultural diversity as a valuable asset for human development and global peace. WHAT IS A "CIVILIZATION"? In academic terms, a civilization is a complex human society characterized by urban development, social stratification, a form of government, symbolic communication systems (such as writing), and shared cultural traits, values, and norms. Civilizations typically exhibit advancements in the arts, science, architecture, and trade, and they often significantly impact their environment and neighboring societies. The terms "civilization" and "culture" are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different concepts. Here are the key differences between the two: CHARACTERISTICS OF A CIVILIZATION Urban Development: Presence of cities and urban centers. Social Stratification: Hierarchical social structure with different classes and roles. Government: Established forms of governance and political systems. Writing Systems: Development of written language and record-keeping. Cultural Achievements: Significant advancements in various fields such as art, science, architecture, and literature. Economic Systems: Complex economic activities, including trade, agriculture, and industry. Civilizations are large and encompass multiple cultures. They represent a higher level of societal organization and development. Examples: —Ancient Egyptian Civilization —Roman Civilization —Chinese Civilization —Mayan Civilization CHARACTERISTICS OF A CULTURE Culture refers to a particular group's ideas, customs, social behaviors, beliefs, and practices. It includes language, religion, cuisine, traditions, and arts shared by a group and passed down through generations. Attributes include: Beliefs and Values: Shared beliefs, values, and norms. Customs and Traditions: Specific practices, rituals, and traditions unique to a group. Language: Common language or dialects spoken by the group. Art and Literature: Creative expressions, including music, dance, visual arts, and literature. Social Practices: Everyday behaviors and social practices, such as marriage customs, family structures, and social etiquette. Material Culture: Physical objects and artifacts created and used by the group, such as clothing, tools, and buildings. Culture is smaller in scope compared to civilization and can exist within any level of societal organization, from small communities to large societies. Multiple cultures can coexist within a single civilization. Doughnut Day, Ntl.(1938): June 5

06:20 AM | -
National Donut (Doughnut) Day commemorates a 1938 marketing campaign deployed by the Salvation Army and created by Dr. Morgan Pett during WWI. National Donut Day began as a gesture by Morgan Pett, a military doctor treating wounded soldiers during the First World War. As he was helping the soldiers, he would give a donut to raise their spirits. One soldier who particularly appreciated the gesture was Lieutenant General Samuel Geary. He and Pett later created a fundraiser to make sure every injured soldier treated received the ‘edible lifesaver’ we call a donut. This gesture caught the attention of the Salvation Army, who, in turn, began using it with the soldiers assigned in France starting in 1938. During National Donut Day, shops offer free donuts to customers.

15th of Khordad (IR)(1963): June 5

06:20 AM | -
June 5, 1963, is the anniversary of an uprising in Iran, referred to as the 15th of Khordad. Iranian historians and the people point to this event as the beginning of the Islamic Revolution. The event began with a speech by Imam Seyed Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, who would go on to lead the opposition to the repressive monarchy. He would later be known to the West as Ayatollah Khomeini. His speech exposed the back-channel collusion between the Pahlavi regime and the state of Israel. Angered by the disclosure, the people rose in protest. Agents of the government intervened, arresting and killing several of the protesters. The actions of the 15th of Khordad were the first time the people openly challenged the much-hated regime. Khomeini would lead the revolutionaries and ultimately depose the Shah in 1979. That deposition ushered in the current Iranian Republic, headed by an Ayatollah and governed by a President. The 15th of Khordad is a national holiday in Iran.

9-9-9 Emergency Number Established (1937): June 30

06:20 AM | -
June 30, 1937, saw the world's first emergency telephone number deployed in London, covering a 12-mile radius from Oxford Circus. It would be another 31 years before the US would implement a similar system, 911, and even longer for other nations. The idea of 999 was first suggested in 1935 after five women died during a fire in Wimpole Street in London. Callers using 0 to dial the police could not get through as the switchboard was jammed. By the time people got through, it was too late. The first 999 calls came in on July 2, and the system fielded 1336 calls in its first week. TRAVEL TIP: If traveling internationally, always ask for that country's emergency number(s) when you go through customs and add them to your phone, or write it on a PostIt note and keep it in your passport. For example, in China, Japan, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia, it is 110, but in neighboring United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, it is 999. In Argentina, Canada, Jordan, Mexico, Palau, Panama, the Philippines, the United States, and Uruguay, it is 911. Travel to Australia and you'll need 000. Some countries get complicated. Take France, for example. In France, dial 17 for the police, 15 for an ambulance, and 18 for the fire department. It can get really confusing, and in the event of an emergency, you don't want to call the wrong number accidentally and waste precious seconds. You'll also want to keep your nation's embassy contact information for each country you visit. Should you get in trouble, your country's diplomatic services will be your second call after emergency services.

Aboriginal Day, Ntl. (CA): June 21

06:20 AM | -
The growing movement for Aboriginal rights in Canadian led to calls for greater recognition of the contributions of Aboriginal peoples to Canadian society. Shortly after the adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood, the leading body representing First Nations in Canada, called for the creation of a yearly "National Aboriginal Solidarity Day" on June 21. Pressure for a national day of recognition continued to grow during the following decade as new ways were sought to bridge the divide between Aboriginal peoples and Canadians, especially in the wake of the 1990 Oka Crisis. In 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended a "National First Peoples Day" to focus on Aboriginal peoples' history, achievements, and contributions in Canada. Later that year, during the Sacred Assembly, Elijah Harper repeated the call for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal peoples was made. On June 13, 1996, after considerable consultation with Aboriginal organizations, June 21 was officially declared National Aboriginal Day.
