The Wedding with the Sea, or Sposalizio del Mare, is an annual ceremony held in the Italian city of Venice on the Sunday following the Feast of the Ascension, which falls 40 days after Easter. The ceremony celebrates Venice's maritime history and its relationship with the sea. The Wedding with the Sea ceremony dates back to 1000 AD, when Doge Pietro II Orseolo saved a ship that was in distress during a storm. In celebration, he threw a gold ring into the sea and declared Venice, the "bride of the sea." Since then, the ceremony has been held yearly, with the Doge or a city representative throwing a gold ring into the sea to symbolize the marriage between Venice and the Adriatic Sea. The ceremony begins with a procession of boats, including the Bucintoro, the historic state barge of the Doges, and other decorated boats. The boats make their way to the entrance of the Venetian Lagoon, where the ceremony takes place. The ceremony is presided over by the mayor of Venice and includes prayers, blessings, and the throwing of the gold ring. After the ceremony, boats gather for a regatta in the lagoon. The Wedding with the Sea is a popular event in Venice, drawing locals and tourists alike to witness the unique and historic ceremony.

The containers these first winemakers used were more like the box wine of today, each holding approximately five liters. This bottle emerged in Shulaveri, Georgia, in Eastern Europe. If you've ever enjoyed visiting Batumi or Tbilisi, as this writer has, Georgia is a wine lover's nirvana! Even the Czarist Russian architecture is covered in grape vines rather than ivy. Every cobblestone street in Batumi seems to have its wine shop and vintage. It is darling! Wine has been a part of human history since we began living in agricultural communities approximately 8-10,000 years ago. It became an art form during the Grecian times and perfected by the Romans and French. Turning water into wine was Jesus Christ's first miracle to please His mother at a wedding (ah). VITICULTURE IN THE UNITED STATES The United States boasts a diverse and expansive wine industry, with production occurring in all 50 states. California dominates the scene, producing approximately 81% of all U.S. wine, particularly in renowned regions like Napa Valley, Temecula, and Sonoma. Other major wine-producing states include Washington, Oregon, New York, and Texas. CONSUMPTION Washington, DC, leads the nation with the highest per capita wine consumption at 1.07 gallons per person annually, followed by Delaware and New Hampshire. Conversely, states like West Virginia, Kansas, and Utah have the lowest per capita consumption, each with less than 0.20 gallons per person. PREFERENCES Cabernet Sauvignon tops the list as America's most-loved wine, followed closely by Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. These trends highlight the dynamic nature of wine appreciation across the country, influenced by regional production, cultural factors, and evolving tastes. Wine is a daily part of many cultures but shunned in others for religious reasons. It is considered a civilized drink best shared with family and friends.
