Maternal Mental Health Week: May 1-7

Maternal mental health disorders occur during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. They can be mild or severe, including deep depression and anxiety, a less common but severe postpartum psychosis, which affects less than 0.5 percent of women and is always considered a medical emergency. Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week intends to expand awareness of and the conversation about these treatable complications surrounding pregnancy. Annually the first seven days of May.

The Bucket’s Got a Hole Day, or the National Hole in a Bucket Day, is a day that honors the children’s song “There’s a Hole in my Bucket.” The song originated in 18th century Germany and told the story of Henry and Liza conversing back and forth about Henry’s leaking bucket, which he needs to fix if he can carry water. It’s a circular argument and a popular children’s rhyme today.

Buddha Purnima is an important day for Buddhists and Hindus. This holiday commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha and always falls on the full moon night in the month of Vaisakha of the Hindu calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this occurs in April or May. Lord Buddha was the founder of the Buddhist religion and is said to be the ninth avatar of Vishnu. Buddha Jayanti's main celebrations occur in Bodh Gaya (Bihar, India). Bodh Gaya is the most sacred place for Buddhists. Temples are decorated, and prayers, sermons, and non-stop recitations of Buddhist scriptures resonate in monasteries, religious halls, and homes. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. National Building Safety Month has been an annual event since 1980 with presidential support since 2011. The following is from that Presidential Proclamation: "Building safety is a critical component of our homeland security, personal and public safety, property protection, and economic well-being. While disasters have had devastating and heartbreaking effects in our country and around the world, modern building safety standards and fire prevention codes help us withstand, mitigate, and rapidly recover from hurricanes, winter storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods. It is our collective responsibility as a Nation—nonprofit organizations and the public and private sectors—to implement effective standards and codes that sustain safe and resilient structures. Buttermilk Biscuit Day: May 14

Buttermilk Biscuit Day celebrates the Southern original quick bread made with buttermilk, eggs, flour, and baking powder. Biscuits (American style) were considered a treat before the American Civil War and later an expediency. They were popularized throughout the country via Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1950s. Biscuits and gravy is a traditional American breakfast consisting of buttermilk or flour biscuits drenched in white gravy with pork sausage. It can also be made with other meats; however, pork is the tradition. Relatively inexpensive, this dense, flavorful breakfast provided substantial energy for people during the day. Until recently, large breakfasts were a necessity, and people worked in labor-intensive jobs, and many of the modern conveniences available today replace tasks that required brawn. The dish traces its roots to the Jamestown colony in the United States and became very popular during the American Revolution. It remains a favorite in the United States, especially in the southern region. Today, biscuits and gravy, due to its high energy and fat content, is a "treat" breakfast beloved by millions (including this writer!).

Canada was built on its immigrants' dreams, aspirations, blood, sweat, and tears. Cannes Film Festival (FR): May 12-23

The Cannes International Film Festival began as an initiative of Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, who was keen to establish an international cultural event in France to rival the Venice Film Festival. The first edition of the festival was planned for Cannes in 1939 under the presidency of Louis Lumière. However, WWII got in the way. The first Cannes Film Festival occurred on September 20, 1946; in 1952, it moved to May. While early editions of the festival were primarily a social event where nearly all films went away with an award, the appearance of stars from around the world on the festival's red carpet and increasing media coverage quickly earned the event its legendary international reputation. Today it is one of the world's most star-studded and anticipated events and a prestigious venue to debut new films. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. National Good Car Keeping Month occurs each May and reminds Americans to prepare their cars for summer driving. Key tips include: Radiator flushes. Rotating tires and checking the pressure. Replacing brake pads if needed. Replacing windshield wipers and wiper fluid. Getting an oil change. Car owners are urged to keep a fire extinguisher, window cleaner, and paper towels in their cars (bugs tend to cloud windshields in rural areas during the summer quickly).
