Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day, Intl. (1820): May 12

International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Fibromyalgia Awareness Day occurs each year on the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820). Nightingale was believed to have ME/CFS. The CFIDS Association of America champions the international day and week observed worldwide, most notably in England, South Africa, the US, Canada, and Australia. The purpose of the week and focus day are to draw attention to the illness, inform the public of their options should they be struggling with ME/CFS or suspect they have it, and raise funds toward finding a cure. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating chronic illness. This is a middle age disease, striking primarily women, people in their 30s and 40s during the prime of life. However, it can afflict any gender and any age. Over one million people in the US and tens of millions worldwide suffer. Symptoms include: Visual blurring, light sensitivity, and eye pain Difficulty maintaining an upright posture Dizziness, balance problems, and fainting Chills and night sweats Trouble sleeping Gastrointestinal disturbances Allergies and sensitivities to foods, odors, chemicals, medications Brain fog and cognitive impairment Gynecological problems, including PMS Irritability, depression, and mood swings The severity of ME/CFS varies greatly. About 25 percent of people with ME/CFS are disabled by the illness, and most symptoms are invisible to others. Common conditions that occur along with ME/CFS include: Fibromyalgia Orthostatic intolerance Irritable bowel syndrome Interstitial cystitis Temporomandibular joint disorder Chronic pelvic pain Multiple chemical sensitivity Studies show fewer than 20 percent of ME/CFS patients in the United States are correctly diagnosed. Diagnosing ME/CFS is challenging because there is still not one conclusive diagnostic test or biomarker. The cause is unknown, and no cure exists for ME/CFS. This event began in 1992.

Cinco de Mayo (MX)(1862): May 5

A lot of Americans think Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. It's not. Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for "May Fifth," marks the anniversary of the Mexican army's entrenchment and ultimate victory in Puebla against the French army on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. This conflict ran concurrent with the American Civil War (1860-1864) and lasted from 1861-1867. The French were ultimately defeated. Americans use Cinco de Mayo as a day to celebrate Mexican culture, specifically the music, food, and drinks. Ironically, it's not a big deal in Mexico, but it might as well be Latin Saint Patrick's Day in the United States. It's huge. Like many events, Canada and other nations globally have begun hosting Cinco de Mayo celebrations in their countries as a tribute to one of the world's favorite food categories, Latino culture, and the now iconic beverage of tequila.

Clap 4 Health Month: May

If you're confused because this event usually occurs during winter, you're sane. The organizers keep moving it around. First, it was January, then March, and now May. Hopefully, they'll keep it in one place now. Children, Seniors, and just about everyone can clap. Not only is it exercise, but it releases feel-good endorphins that elevate your mood. Clap 4 Health Month is an annual outreach program that uses clapping to educate Americans about obesity and cardiovascular disease.

National Clean Up Your Room Day is a great time each year to get organized, remove toys that aren’t used anymore, outgrown clothes, and prepare for a garage sale. It just could be an extra incentive for your child if they could sell or donate what they no longer use and use that money to purchase something they do want. Parents, enjoy the day! Coca Cola Day (1886): May 8

Coca-Cola® Day celebrates the world’s best-known soft drink and one of the most recognized brands in the world. It all began on this day in 1886 when the curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, led him to create a distinctive-tasting soft drink for soda fountains. He made a flavored syrup, including extract of coca leaves and kola nuts, added for medicinal purposes, of course (it was a pharmacy). Pemberton took this syrup to his neighborhood pharmacy, where he mixed it with carbonated water and was deemed “excellent” by those who sampled it. Dr. Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, is credited with naming “Coca‑Cola” and designing the trademarked, distinct script still used today. Before he died in 1888, just two years after creating what was to become the world’s best-selling sparkling beverage, Dr. Pemberton sold portions of his business to various parties, with the majority of the interest sold to Atlanta businessman Asa G. Candler. Under Mr. Candler’s leadership, the distribution of Coca‑Cola expanded to soda fountains beyond Atlanta. In 1894, impressed by the growing demand for Coca‑Cola and the desire to make the beverage portable, Joseph Biedenharn installed bottling machinery in the rear of his Mississippi soda fountain, becoming the first to put Coca‑Cola in bottles. Large-scale bottling became possible just five years later when in 1899, three enterprising businessmen in Chattanooga, Tennessee, secured exclusive rights to bottle and sell Coca‑Cola. The three entrepreneurs purchased the bottling rights from Asa Candler for just $1. Benjamin Thomas, Joseph Whitehead, and John Lupton developed the Coca‑Cola worldwide bottling system. Though the original recipe for Coca-Cola included cocaine (the amount of which has never been disclosed), and this ingredient was instrumental to naming the product, as of 1929, Coca-Cola has been completely narcotics-free.

The 529 College Savings Plan is a tax-deferred vehicle in the US tax law that allows parents and students to defer tax payments on savings for college and other educational pursuits/costs. Similar to a retirement 401K, it reduces the amount of tax owed now and defers or cancels it in the future if it is used for its intended purpose. College Savings Day, or 529 Day, is a national event designed to raise awareness of this savings option and educate the population on its numerical equivalent, May 29 or 5-29 each year.

Colored Troops Founders Day (1863): May 22

Although African Americans and people of color have been instrumental in every conflict before the United States became a nation. However, they were often excluded from official recognition and pay. On May 22, 1863, people of color became official US military members on the Union side in this case. By the end of the US Civil War, more than 200,000 persons of color were official US army members. Colored Troops Founders Day marks this anniversary.
