Preparing for an emergency is something that everyone has a responsibility to do. This year, Canadians are encouraged to learn about the specific risks and hazards in their regions and the actions they can take before an emergency to help reduce the impact of a disaster. To strengthen Canada’s emergency management approach, our government is shifting from a reactive model to one that allows us to predict better, plan for, and prevent natural disasters and the costs Canadians suffer. To this end, we are investing $200 million over five years in the National Disaster Mitigation Program to support provincial and territorial flood mitigation efforts. Through the Get Prepared campaign, our government has worked with provincial and territorial partners to encourage Canadians to know the risks, make a plan and get an emergency preparedness kit. With basic emergency preparedness in place, the next step is to take action to reduce the threats most likely to affect your family and community. Everyone can take simple steps to reduce disaster risk. For example, if you live in a flood-prone area, you can help prevent flood damage by using a weather-protection sealant around basement windows and ground-level doors. Make sure drainage around your home helps move water away from the building. Emergency management is a joint responsibility. This week, we also take the opportunity to recognize and thank first responders, volunteers, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, and authorities at all levels of government for their support in emergency management. Epilepsy Week, Ntl. (UK): May 18-24

National Epilepsy Week seeks to open the conversation and remove the stigma and fear of discussing and having epilepsy. One in five persons with epilepsy in the United Kingdom is uncomfortable speaking with their friends and family about their condition. This week encourages people to understand the disorder and supports the fight against the misconceptions, discrimination, and isolation facing those who live with epilepsy. Support techniques and tools are also provided for caregivers of persons with epilepsy.

Eurovision Song Contest (AT): May 12-16

Created by Marcel Bezençon and modeled after the San Remo Music Festival (Italy), the Eurovision Song Contest premiered on May 24, 1956. ABBA is one of the super groups to come out of the competition. The most famous song from Eurovision is Domenico Mudugno's "Volare." Eurovision's objective is to test the limits of live broadcast television technology. The event is known for its innovative performances and widely diverse contestants. In 2015, the Eurovision Song Contest was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the Longest Running Annual TV Music Competition. This event takes place over three nights over five days. The festival's diversity, cross-cultural exchange, and learning spaces are a primary draw. Hey Day at the University of Pennsylvania combines the customs of Straw Hat Day and Graduation into a single event known as Hey Day. The University of Pennsylvania explains: "It all started in 1916. Hey Day was established as a "Moving-Up" celebration, modeled after a similar custom recently established at Syracuse University. Its purpose was formal, to mark the advancement of each class. In 1931, Class Day and Hey Day combined into a single celebration, with Ivy Day also being moved to the same date. At the time, the festival consisted of a traditional ceremony in Irvine Auditorium, followed by the planting of the ivy plant. Hey Day included reading the Class History, Class Prophecy, and Class Poem, the presentation of the four Senior Honors Awards, and the announcement of those elected into various honorary societies. Through the years, the emphasis of Hey Day shifted from formal assemblies to student celebrations, marked by the introduction of the Parade of Classes in 1937 and the incorporation of the Junior Cane March in 1965. In recent decades Hey Day represents the official passage of the junior class to senior status. It is characterized by thousands of marching students parading around campus sporting fake straw hats, red T-shirts, and canes."

Mental Health Action Day: May 21 (est)

Created in 2021, Mental Health Action Day is supported by over 1,300 organizations, brands, government agencies, and cultural leaders. May is also Mental Health Month in the United States, and this day is intended to drive the conversation from mental health awareness to mental health action. Mental Health Action Day comes at a critical time. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected the mental health and well-being of people of color, young people, and LGBTQ+ communities. Studies have found: Four in ten adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, compared to one in ten before the pandemic. Fifty-six percent of young adults ages 18-24 reported symptoms of anxiety or depression during the pandemic. Forty-eight percent of Black people reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder during the pandemic versus 42% of all Adults and 40.9% of white people. Communities of color, who have experienced disparate impacts of COVID-19 and the ongoing trauma of systemic racism from police brutality to anti-Asian violence, are also facing more significant mental health challenges than ever before but continue to face challenges accessing mental health care. The cross-sector collaboration calling attention to the great need for support and action to address mental health in the same way we treat physical health needs is groundbreaking. Today's actions are only the beginning, from media and tech companies to nonprofits, consumer brands, government agencies, and cultural leaders. Coalition partners will host a series of activations, from public events featuring experts and activists to employee engagement activities. They will empower people to take initial action to support their mental health needs, whether for themselves or others.
