Neuropathy Awareness Week, Peripheral, Ntl.: May 3-9

06:20 AM | -
Created by the Neuropathy Association in 2014, National Neuropathy Awareness Week focuses on patient care, research, and cures. Peripheral neuropathy, or peripheral nerve damage, impacts over 20 million Americans, making it one of the most common chronic diseases and a leading cause of adult disability. Neuropathy disrupts the body’s communication with its muscles, organs, and tissues. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain, often beginning in the hands and feet. With early diagnosis, quality of life can be restored. If ignored, symptoms can intensify to loss of sensation, weakness, unremitting pain, or disability.

Palliative Care Week, Ntl.(AU): May 11-17

06:20 AM | -
Palliative Care is a fancy word for the process of dying and identifying what matters most to you and those you love. The Productivity Commission’s recent report into human services found between 80,000 and 140,000 of the 160,000 people who die each year in Australia could benefit from high-quality end-of-life care. Dying is a normal part of life, so all Australians need to discuss death and the type of care they would want to receive if they could no longer speak for themselves. National Palliative Care Week is an opportunity to open up the conversation with loved ones and help to ensure that when the inevitable happens, it will be as stress-free as possible for the survivors and attend to the needs of the departed.

Road Safety Week, Canadian (CA): May 12-18

06:20 AM | -
Midway through Aggressive Driving Month, the Canadian Safety Council chooses one week to intensify its focus on younger drivers and fostering safe driving habits. According to Transport Canada, young driver, and passenger fatalities continue to be very noticeable in motor vehicle collision statistics. Nearly 23 percent of motor vehicle fatalities were 15 to 24 years old's in 2010, even though this age group makes up only 13 percent of the Canadian population. Put another way, over 500 young people are killed each year in road crashes in Canada, and a further 40,000 are injured, many seriously. Areas to focus on improving safety among young drivers include seatbelt use, impaired driving, and distracted driving.

Tails for Trails: April 11

06:20 AM | -
Every spring, the Tails on Trails 5K & 10K Walk/Run, organized by NHES, occurs at the picturesque State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, Virginia, in support of Spay Today. Participants can walk, run solo, or bring their furry friends for either course. The "Sponsor a Shelter Dog" feature allows people to support dogs from The Briggs Animal Adoption Center that are up for adoption. Trained volunteers walk these dogs during the event, allowing participants to interact with them. Sponsors' names are embellished on the back of the event t-shirt and given to sponsors and participants upon completing the walk or run. Tails on Trails offers a fun-filled day for all while supporting the critical cause of Spay Today.

Webby Awards: May 11 (est)

06:20 AM | -
The Webby Awards date is announced a few weeks before it occurs, generally in May. The Webby Awards are the Internet's most respected symbol of success. Created in 1996, the awards are followed in over 70 countries worldwide. Categories awarded include: – Websites – Film & Video – Advertising, Media & PR – Mobile Sites & Apps – Social – Podcasts & Digital Audio – Games PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

143 Day, Mr. Rogers Day: May 23

06:20 AM | -
The beloved children's television host, Mr. Rogers (Fred Rogers), referred to the numbers 1-4-3 as standing for the letters in the phrase 'I love you.' It is also the weight he maintained throughout his life as an adult. In 2019 the Governor of Pennsylvania declared the 143rd day of the year, each year subsequently, as Mr. Rogers Day of Kindness, and people are encouraged to perform simple acts of kindness in his memory throughout the year. It quickly made international news, with fans of the program and his philosophy adopting the day. Fred Rogers was born March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and died February 27, 2003, in Pittsburg. Mr. Roger's Neighborhood aired on American Public Television from 1968 until 2001. Most children born after 1963 have grown up with him (including this writer, who remembers it as one of her favorite shows as a child—along with "Scooby Doo" and "I Love Lucy" reruns). An ordained Presbyterian minister, his entire life's work was devoted to children and children's issues. He often tackled complex subjects such as death, divorce, and death in a way children could relate to and understand. Above all, he focused on building children up and helping them navigate a complicated life.

65 Roses Month (AU): May

06:20 AM | -
Each May, Australia observes 65 Roses Month, focusing on Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in Australia to highlight the growing need for awareness about cystic fibrosis (CF). The last Friday is 65 Roses Day. Children with cystic fibrosis call the disease 65 Roses because it is easier to pronounce (like when a child says ‘butter footed’ instead of ‘barefooted.’The name stuck and is now the official terminology for Cystic Fibrosis. Throughout May in Australia, volunteers and people with CF and their families unite to help shine a spotlight on what CF is and the progress made toward a cure. The United States also observes Cystic Fibrosis Month in May. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: Cystic Fibrosis clogs the lungs, leads to life-threatening lung infections, obstructs the pancreas, and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. In the 1950s, few children with Cystic Fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond. The symbol of Cystic Fibrosis is 65 roses.

African Liberation/Freedom Day (1958/1963): May 25

06:20 AM | -
The ALD was founded in 1958 when Kwame Nkrumah convened the First Conference of Independent States in Accra, Ghana. Eight independent African states attended the event. In commemoration, April 15 was declared Africa Freedom Day to mark each year of progress via the liberation movement. The day symbolizes the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation, often referred to as either imperialism or colonialism. Between 1958 and 1963, national and class struggles intensified in Africa and the developing world. Seventeen African countries won independence over this period, and 1960 was proclaimed the "Year of Africa." The United States and European countries were primarily responsible for the colonialization and exploitive endeavors in the developing world during the last few centuries. For example, during the 1960s, the US government carried out assassinations and attempts on several of Africa's new leaders. The French attempted to hold on to Algiers, resulting in a bloody uprising. The Dutch, Portuguese, and British likewise attended to issues in the region stemming from their previous hold, forcing Africa to organize. On May 25, 1963, thirty-one African heads of state convened a summit to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). African Freedom Day was later changed to African Liberation Day and moved to May 25 in memory of this meeting.
