This week of appreciation recognizes the hard-working men and women of animal care and control who risk their lives and devote their time and resources while serving the public. Animal care and control personnel provide the essential community functions of enforcing animal control laws, protecting the public from diseases such as rabies, and educating the people on the proper care of the community's pets.

Big Wind Day (1934): April 12

Today is the anniversary of the highest recorded wind gust felt by man in history, a record that stood for 62 years until 1996. It was in Mount Washington, New Hampshire, on April 12, 1934, that a wind gust of 231 miles per hour was recorded by staff at the Mount Washington Observatory. In 1996, during Typhoon Olivia, an unmanned station on Barrow Island in Australia clocked a wind gust at 253 miles per hour. Mount Washington continues to hold the record for the fastest wind gust experienced by man. The Barrow Island gust was recorded by machinery, not man.

Dark Sky Week, Intl.: April 12-18

International Dark Sky Week (IDSA) is an Astronomy event organized by the International Dark-Sky Association. The mission of the IDSA is to protect the night skies in the present and for future generations against light pollution and its negative effect on nocturnal birds and animals. Excess light during the night has the potential to destroy entire ecosystems. Additionally, much of the light used to illuminate cities is unnecessary, thus a waste of energy. High school student Jennifer Barlow created this event in 2003. It occurs during the week encompassing the new moon in April.

Dog Bite Awareness Week, Ntl.: April 12-18

More than 5,400 postal employees were attacked by dogs in the United States in 2021. From nips and bites to vicious attacks, aggressive dog behavior poses a serious threat to postal employees and the public. To highlight the enormity of this serious issue, the U.S. Postal Service is providing information on the do’s and don’ts of responsible dog ownership as part of its annual National Dog Bite Awareness Week public service campaign. “Every year, thousands of postal employees are attacked by dogs as they deliver America’s mail. And while it’s a dog’s natural instinct to protect their family and home, we ask all customers to act responsibly by taking safety precautions with their dogs while the mail is being delivered,” said USPS Employee Safety and Health Awareness Manager Leeann Theriault. “When a carrier comes to the residence, keep the dog inside the house and away from the door — or behind a fence on a leash — to avoid an attack.” Cleveland, Ohio is the city with the most postal dog attacks at 58 in 2021, followed by Houston, Texas, Kansas City Missouri, Los Angeles California and Louisville Kentucky.

The licorice plant (technically a weed) and its roots go back thousands of years as a drug, spice, and remedy. Ancient Egyptians included large quantities of the herb in King Tut’s tomb, often in medicines to treat respiratory problems, gastrointestinal issues, and coughs. During the 18th century, the Dutch began creating candy with it. People often confuse anise with licorice, as they taste similar. However, licorice is a root, and anise is a seed that can be substituted for each other in recipes. National Licorice Day is an opportunity to explore the hundreds of varieties of licorice created today worldwide. Enjoy!

National Pet ID Week has one sole purpose: to raise awareness about the importance of updating your pet's identification tags and microchips. Each year tens of thousands of house pets go missing. Only two percent of cats and 15-20 percent of dogs, once lost, ever find their way home. Tagging your pet improves the chances your pet will return. Vets, pet stores, and shelters throughout the country support Pet ID Week. Check with your local entities for specials and resources. The American Humane Association began promoting National Pet ID Week in the 1980s, occurring annually during the third week of April (not on the fixed dates of April 17-23 noted on many calendar websites). The American Humane Association encourages pet owners to take the time to ensure their pets have proper identification and to keep their contact information up to date.

NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATIONS WEEK National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW), observed annually during the second week of April, celebrates the critical work of public safety telecommunicators, also known as dispatchers. This event honors the thousands of men and women who answer emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the public. NPSTW's objective is multifaceted. It aims to honor public safety telecommunicators' hard work and dedication, increase public awareness of their critical role in emergency response, and foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the challenges they face. By recognizing these individuals, NPSTW also seeks to boost morale within the profession and encourage retention and recruitment to be more appreciated by staff. HISTORY AND PURPOSE NPSTW was established in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of California's Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. Initially a local observance, it gained national recognition in 1994 when Congress formally designated the second week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The primary purpose of NPSTW is to recognize and appreciate the hard work and dedication of public safety telecommunicators. These professionals are the unseen first responders who provide a critical link between the public and emergency services. They handle many emergencies, ranging from medical crises to natural disasters, and their ability to remain calm under pressure can be the difference between life and death. Public safety agencies nationwide participate in NPSTW, including police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) departments. During this week, agencies typically organize various activities and events to honor their telecommunicators. These activities may include award ceremonies, appreciation luncheons, and community outreach programs. Some agencies also use the week to educate the public about the role of telecommunicators and the importance of their work. Telecommunicators participate by sharing their stories and experiences, fostering community and mutual support among their peers. Social media campaigns and local news stories often highlight the significant contributions of these professionals, helping to raise awareness of their critical role. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is a vital reminder of emergency dispatchers' invaluable service.
