Airboat Day, Ntl.: February 19

06:20 AM | -
National Airboat Day, celebrated on February 19th each year, is a recent addition to the calendar of national days, having been created in February 2021 by Wild Florida Airboats. Airboats are a unique and vital mode of transportation, particularly in areas like Florida. The history of airboats dates back to the early 20th century, with the first airboat, known as the 'Whooshmobile,' built in 1933 by the Floridian frog hunter Johnny Lamb. Airboats can navigate the shallow and marshy waters of Florida's Everglades. Over time, airboats have become an essential part of Florida's cultural heritage, deployed for various purposes, including recreation, transportation, search and rescue, and law enforcement. The primary purpose of National Airboat Day is to recognize and celebrate the unique design and role of airboats in states like Florida, where they have been a significant part of history and culture. The day offers a chance for both tourists and locals to explore the Floridian wildlife, especially its alligators, and to observe the region's tropical birds and other endangered species. Celebrations of National Airboat Day include airboat rides, exploring the Florida Everglades, and sharing experiences on social media. It's an opportunity for airboat enthusiasts and the general public to appreciate this distinctive watercraft and its contribution to the exploration and development of Florida's waterways. This day highlights the importance of airboats in Florida's history and culture and promotes public awareness of this unique form of transportation.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is one of several AIDS awareness days throughout the year, targeting a specific demographic with information designed to address their needs and concerns.

Amalaki Ekadashi (H): February 27

06:20 AM | -
For Hindus, Ekadashi is a sacred event and falls into two categories: monthly and annually. Lord Vishnu is honored monthly on Ekadashi. Annually the event is expanded during February or March for Ekadeshi of Phalgun Shukla Paksha. In the Hindu calendar, this celebration falls between Maha Shivratri and Holi. Each observance day is marked with day-long fasting in honor of Lord Vishnu according to strict rituals, rules, and regulations. The purpose of fasting is to show sacrifice to receive love and affection from the Hindu god Lord Vishnu. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

AMD/Low Vision Awareness Month: February

06:20 AM | -
It begins in your 40s. You’re reading the messages on your cell phone and notice it has become difficult to read. You find yourself reaching for reading glasses. In a short period, usually weeks, you can no longer read your text messages without glasses. Next, you begin to notice it’s not as much fun to drive at night, and it’s hard to read labels in the supermarket. The fine print is no print, and your carefree days of living without glasses are suddenly gone. Most everyone experiences this. But some get much worse. AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) is a leading cause of vision loss. It affects more than 2 million Americans aged 50 and older. AMD Low Vision Month is set aside each year in February to bring awareness to the effects and dangers associated with vision loss as we age. Programs focus on promoting aids for low vision that enable people to make the most of their remaining vision. Optometrists and others supply information on eye diseases, warning signs, and treatment.

American Painters Day (1908): February 3

06:20 AM | -
American Painters Day celebrates the rich and diverse history of American painting. Its connection to The Eight, a group of early 20th-century artists, underscores the day's significance in highlighting the evolution of American art. The Eight, consisting of Arthur B. Davies, William J. Glackens, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan, were pivotal figures in the American art scene. They opened an exhibition at the Macbeth Gallery in New York City on February 3, 1908, marking a momentous occasion in the history of American art. This exhibition challenged the artistic norms of the era, paving the way for modern American painting. These artists were united not by a single style but by their shared desire for artistic independence and their opposition to the academic constraints imposed by institutions like the National Academy of Design. Their work varied widely in subject matter and technique, encompassing urban realism, impressionistic landscapes, and scenes of everyday life reflecting a broader shift in American art, moving away from traditional European influences towards a more varied and uniquely American perspective. The 1908 exhibition at the Macbeth Gallery was significant for rejecting the established art world's standards. It showcased a form of realism that was starkly different from the idealized and polished works that were popular at the time. The exhibition's success led to increased recognition of these artists and helped to inspire future generations of American painters. American Painters Day, in association with The Eight, serves as a reminder of the importance of artistic freedom and innovation. It celebrates the contributions of American artists to the global art scene and encourages appreciation for the diverse styles and themes that characterize American painting. CONSIDER THESE 9 FAMOUS AMERICAN PAINTERS Norman Rockwell (1894–1978): Known for his poignant and romantic portrayals of American life, Rockwell's most famous work is arguably "Freedom from Want" (1943), part of the Four Freedoms series, which depicts a family gathered around a table for a holiday meal. Jackson Pollock (1912–1956): A leading figure in abstract expressionism, Pollock's most celebrated work is "No. 5, 1948," known for its distinctive style of drip painting. Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986): Renowned for her large-scale, close-up paintings of flowers, O'Keeffe's "Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1" (1932) is one of her most famous works, exemplifying her unique perspective on natural forms. Andy Warhol (1928–1987): A leading figure in the pop art movement, Warhol is best known for his work "Campbell's Soup Cans" (1962), a series of thirty-two canvases of iconic soup cans reflecting consumer culture. Edward Hopper (1882–1967): Skilled at depictions of solitude in contemporary American life, Hopper's most famous painting is "Nighthawks" (1942), portraying people sitting in a downtown diner late at night. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988): Emerging from the graffiti scene in New York City, Basquiat's most acclaimed work is "Untitled" (1982), known for its raw, emotive style and commentary on African-American identity. Mary Cassatt (1844–1926): An American painter and printmaker, Cassatt is well known for "The Child's Bath" (1893), which displays her signature focus on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. Grant Wood (1891–1942): Best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest, Wood's most famous work is "American Gothic" (1930), showing a farmer standing beside a woman, presumed to be his daughter, in front of a gothic-style house. Mark Rothko (1903–1970): Renowned for his contributions to abstract expressionism, Rothko's most notable works are his color field paintings, particularly "Orange, Red, Yellow" (1961), characterized by large blocks of color. The legacy of The Eight lives on as their work and their fight for artistic independence continue to inspire contemporary artists. American Painters Day, in this context, is not just about honoring past artists but also about acknowledging American art's ongoing evolution and vitality.

An Affair to Remember Month: February

06:20 AM | -
There is no organizer for An Affair to Remember Month. It grew out of tradition and the love many women seem to have for the 1957 film "An Affair to Remember" starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. It remains one of the most famous love stories ever filmed and captures the spirit of Valentine's Day with the return of a long-lost love.

Angelman Day, Intl.: February 15

06:20 AM | -
International Angelman Day, observed annually on February 15, raises awareness for Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. It aims to increase understanding of the syndrome, support individuals and families affected by it, and promote research efforts for treatments and a cure. Dr. Harry Angelman identified Angelman Syndrome in 1965. It is a complex genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system, characterized by severe developmental delays, problems with motor coordination (ataxia) and balance, and epilepsy. Individuals with Angelman Syndrome often have a happy demeanor, characterized by frequent laughing, smiling, and excitability. The purpose of International Angelman Day is multifaceted. It seeks to educate the public about Angelman Syndrome, which is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed late due to its rarity and similarity to other conditions. The day also serves as a platform for fundraising initiatives to support medical research and provide resources for families and caregivers. Moreover, it's a day for the global Angelman community to connect, share experiences, and offer mutual support. A key feature of International Angelman Day is the lighting up buildings and landmarks in blue. This act of illumination is symbolic, representing a beacon of hope and solidarity for those affected by Angelman Syndrome. Blue was chosen for its calming and peaceful connotations, reflecting the serene and joyful nature of many individuals with the syndrome. The lighting of buildings in blue also serves as a powerful visual statement, drawing public attention and sparking curiosity and conversation about Angelman Syndrome. These illuminated landmarks become focal points for local events and activities related to the day, including educational campaigns, community gatherings, and media coverage. International Angelman Day increases awareness and understanding of Angelman Syndrome, fostering community connections and driving forward the quest for better treatments and a cure. The lighting up of landmarks in blue symbolizes hope and unity, shining a light on a condition that affects individuals and families across the globe.

Arabian Leopard, Intl. Day of the: February 10

06:20 AM | -
CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, THE ARABIAN LEOPARD: A CALL TO ACTION The International Day of the Arabian Leopard is an observance dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of the Arabian leopard and promoting efforts to conserve this critically endangered species. The event aims to highlight the importance of protecting the Arabian leopard's natural habitats, foster an understanding of its challenges, and mobilize support for conservation initiatives. The Arabian leopard, a solitary and elusive big cat, is a unique inhabitant of the mountainous regions of the Arabian Peninsula. These rugged terrains, with their steep slopes and cliffs, provide the leopards with cover and vantage points for hunting, making them a fascinating species to learn about. The primary purpose of this day is to draw global attention to the Arabian leopard's critical status, encourage effective conservation strategies, and engage local communities and international stakeholders in preserving the species. Their involvement is crucial in championing this event and ensuring the leopard's survival. CONSERVATION STATUS AND PROTECTION MEASURES The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considered the Arabian leopard critically endangered. The species faces severe threats due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, hunting, and prey base depletion. With an estimated population of fewer than 200 cats remaining, immediate and decisive action is needed to prevent their extinction. Conservation efforts can include: Habitat Protection Preserving and restoring natural habitats ensures Arabian leopards have adequate space and resources to thrive. Anti-Poaching Measures Implement strict anti-poaching laws and enhance law enforcement to protect leopards from illegal hunting. Community Engagement Educate and involve local communities in conservation efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote coexistence. Captive Breeding Programs Support breeding programs in zoos and wildlife reserves to increase the population and potentially reintroduce individuals into the wild. Research and Monitoring Conduct scientific research to understand the leopards' ecology, behavior, and threats, and use this information to inform conservation strategies. PARTICIPATING IN THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE ARABIAN LEOPARD People can participate in the International Day of the Arabian Leopard in various ways: —Awareness Campaigns: Share information on social media, attend webinars, and participate in local events to spread awareness about the Arabian leopard. —Donations and Fundraising: Contribute to or organize fundraisers for organizations dedicated to leopard conservation. —Educational Programs: Engaging in or supporting educational programs that teach about the importance of biodiversity and conservation. —Volunteer Work: Volunteering with conservation groups on habitat restoration, anti-poaching initiatives, and community outreach. —Advocacy: Advocate for more robust wildlife protection policies and support legislation to conserve endangered species. The International Day of the Arabian Leopard is a crucial reminder of the urgent need to protect one of the world's most endangered big cats. It is possible to create a sustainable future for the Arabian leopard through collective efforts and ensure that this magnificent species continues roaming the Arabian Peninsula's mountains.
