Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving (1734): September 24

The Schwenkfelders are a Christian offshoot of Lutheranism, which originated with Casper Schwenckfeld (1489-1561) of Silesia (Southern Germany). His followers would eventually settle in the Perkiomen Valley of southeastern Pennsylvania. Like the Puritans of England, they immigrated to the American colonies to escape religious persecution. They arrived in the United States from the city of Harpersdorf (Poland) between 1731 and 1737. The most significant wave came on September 22, 1734, and they celebrated their first Day of Remembrance on September 24, 1734. The Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving is the oldest known thanksgiving celebration in the United States. President Lincoln declared the national holiday, Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday of November in 1863 to unite the nation during the American Civil War.

Ataxia Awareness Day, International: September 25

Each year Ataxia UK sponsors International Ataxia Awareness Day. Ataxias are a rare group of neurological conditions that affect balance, coordination, and speech. The condition doesn't discriminate and can affect anyone of any age. Studies suggest around 10,000 people live in the UK with a form of ataxia. Some forms of ataxia are treatable, but there is still no cure in most cases. A recent poll showed that only 10% of the UK population have heard of ataxia.

Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival, Custer, (US-SD): September 25-27 (est)

The Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival and Craft Show features 150 exhibitors selling Native American and Western Arts and Crafts and South Dakota Made Products. Dancers, music, and poets provide full-on entertainment with educational programs throughout the weekend. The second day features the annual Buffalo Roundup, in which 1300 bison are branded before the auction. Each day starts with a pancake breakfast; buffalo burgers, brats, and chili are available throughout the day. This event first ran in 1965.

Comic Book Day, Ntl. (1837): September 25

On September 25, 1837, Swiss schoolmaster Rodolphe Töpffer created the character Obadiah Oldbuck and chose to tell a story to his friends in a unique format. His primary motivation was his poor eyesight, and he had trouble reading the words, so he created the first storyboard with images and text beneath. His book was the first time anyone had put pictures and words together, which changed storytelling. Töpffer referred to his picture stories as "little follies." Upon publishing, the little follies became an instant hit. The idea quickly spread throughout Europe and the Americas. From the first little follies, the comic strip and later, the graphic novels and then finally video games, would be born. National Comic Book Day marks the anniversary of the creation of the first comic book. The best way to celebrate is to cuddle up with your favorite graphic novel and dig in.
