Nottingham Goose Fair, (UK): September 26 - October 5 (est)

06:20 AM | -
NOTTINGHAM GOOSE FAIR: A 700-YEAR-OLD TRADITION Over 250,000 visitors flock to the Nottingham Goose Fair, one of the United Kingdom's oldest and most beloved annual events, each autumn. The fair is held at the Forest Recreation Ground and features rides, games, food stalls, and entertainment, drawing people of all ages to celebrate fun and tradition. The Nottingham Goose Fair's origins date back more than 700 years, with its name rooted in the medieval practice of trading geese at the event. First mentioned in 1284 (the time of Robin Hood), the fair initially served as a livestock market, with geese being driven from the Lincolnshire Fens to Nottingham for sale. Over time, the event evolved from a market fair to one focused on entertainment, and today, it has become one of the largest travel fairs in Europe. Held over the course of five days, typically in the first week of October, the fair features more than 500 attractions. From towering roller coasters and exhilarating thrill rides to traditional fairground favorites like carousels and candy floss stalls, the fair caters to thrill-seekers and families alike. In addition to the rides, visitors can enjoy a variety of food vendors offering classic British snacks and international cuisines, making it a lively and diverse experience. The event is immensely popular, with an estimated half a million people attending each year. Locals and tourists flock to the fair, eager to enjoy its unique atmosphere and comprehensive attractions. The fair's long-standing tradition and historical significance have helped cement its status as a key cultural event in Nottingham, drawing generations of families who attend year after year.Attendees come not only for the amusement but also for the sense of community and tradition. For many, the fair is a nostalgic trip back to childhood, while others attend to experience one of the country's most iconic fairs for the first time. Whatever the reason, the Nottingham Goose Fair continues to be a vibrant and cherished event in the UK's calendar, blending history with contemporary fun.

Platelets Day, Sport Purple for: September 26

06:20 AM | -
Sport Purple for Platelets Day is a part of the National ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura) Awareness campaign. _______________ “ITP, immune thrombocytopenia (also known as immune or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) is an autoimmune disease. In autoimmune diseases, the body mounts an immune attack on one or more seemingly ordinary organ systems. In ITP, platelets are the target, marked as foreign by the immune system and eliminated in the spleen, the liver, and other means. In addition to increased platelet destruction, some people with ITP also have impaired platelet production. An average platelet count is between 150,000 and 400,000/microliter of blood. If someone has a platelet count lower than 100,000/microliter of blood with no other reason for low platelets, that person is considered to have ITP.1 There is no accurate, definitive test to diagnose ITP.” Platelet Disorder Support Association ____________________ ITP can occur in children and adults. This day is about raising awareness about the condition and the people living with it. Wear purple today, and tell people why you are doing so.

Road Running Championships, World (US-CA): September 26-28

06:20 AM | -
ABOUT THE WORLD ROAD RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS The World Road Running Championships have emerged as a premier event in the international athletics calendar, drawing the world’s top distance runners to compete in a high-stakes showcase of endurance and speed. These championships are unique in their focus on road running, distinguishing them from traditional track and field competitions and elevating the profile of road racing within the sport. The World Road Running Championships hold a significant place in athletics, offering a specialized platform for road runners to compete at the highest level. Unlike stadium-confined track events, road-running races occur on city streets, allowing for greater public engagement and diverse race environments. This format challenges athletes with varying terrains and weather conditions and brings the sport closer to the community, fostering a widespread appreciation for distance running. FEATURES AND COMPETITIONS The championships feature several race categories, including the half marathon, 10 kilometers, and 5 kilometers, highlighting the versatility and stamina required for road racing. The races occur on flat, fast courses designed to facilitate record-breaking performances, attracting elite runners who specialize in these distances. The event also includes mass participation races permitting amateur runners to compete alongside world-class athletes. HISTORY The history of the World Road Running Championships dates back to 1992, when the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), now known as World Athletics, introduced the World Half Marathon Championships. Over the years, the event expanded to include other distances, reflecting the growing popularity of road running. In 2023, the championships were rebranded as the World Road Running Championships, encompassing a more comprehensive range of events and solidifying their status as the premier global road racing competition. BEHIND THE EVENT World Athletics, the global athletic governing body, is behind the World Road Running Championships. The organization oversees the event’s planning, execution, and regulation, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of competition and fairness. World Athletics collaborates with host cities to design courses, secure sponsorship, and promote the event internationally, enhancing its profile and accessibility. The World Road Running Championships celebrate the athletic prowess of the world’s best distance runners and inspire countless individuals to embrace running as a means of fitness and community. The championships foster a global appreciation for the sport and encourage participation across all levels by bringing together elite and amateur athletes in a festive, city-wide atmosphere. As the event grows, it remains a testament to the enduring appeal and excitement of road running.

US/Iran first diplomatic meeting in 35 years (US/IR)(2013): September 26

06:20 AM | -
The US and Iran's first diplomatic meeting in 35 years (Persia) happened on September 26, 2013. The two nations dissolved diplomatic ties after the Shah's overthrow and the US Embassy's seizure in Iran by student radicals in 1979. The United States CIA and British MI-6 had led a coup in 1953, which overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. At the time, Iran was one of the region's most progressive, pro-Western nations and considered a bridge between Europe and Asia. With the installation of the Shah in Iran, the people's mood toward the west changed. He was a repressive and ostentatious leader and engendered hatred in his people. Leading up to and upon his overthrow in 1979, political leanings in the region moved in an anti-West, anti-American direction. The most notable manifestation of this was the arrival of austere, highly conservative interpretations of Islam becoming the norm throughout the Arabian Peninsula and Persia in both Shi'a and Sunni nations. In May 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the treaty agreed to with Iran, resulting from this historic meeting. In 2022, the nations of Europe, Iran, and the United States seek to repair and reinvigorate the treaty that Iran obeyed and the United States violated.

Google.com Day (1997): September 27

06:20 AM | -
JUST GOOGLE IT! CELEBRATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF GOOGLE Google Day is an informal celebration observed on September 27th each year, marking the anniversary of the creation of the world's most popular search engine, Google, in 1997. This day honors Google's transformative impact on the internet and modern society. While there are no official celebrations, tech enthusiasts and Google fans often take the day to reflect on how the company has changed the way people access and share information. Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. The company began as a research project to improve online search technology, organize the world's information, and make it universally accessible and helpful. Their innovation, known as PageRank, analyzed the relationships between websites, allowing Google to deliver more relevant search results than existing search engines. The name "Google" is derived from the mathematical term "googol," which refers to the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. Milton Sirotta, the nine-year-old nephew of mathematician Edward Kasner, coined the term, which was popularized in the book Mathematics and the Imagination by Kasner and James Newman. Larry Page and Sergey Brin chose this name to signify their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web. The misspelling of "googol" as "Google" became the company's official name, reflecting their playful, innovative approach to technology and the vast scale of their ambition. GOOGLE'S IMPACT Google's impact on the world has been profound. The search engine has become synonymous with finding information online, to the point that "Googling" has entered the lexicon as a verb meaning to search the internet. Beyond search, Google has expanded into various sectors, including online advertising with Google Ads, video sharing through YouTube, and mobile operating systems with Android. These innovations have not only transformed how people interact with the web but also influenced your daily lives, making you a part of the digital revolution that has touched billions worldwide. Google's rise to dominance occurred due to a few specific facts. Its superior search algorithms provided more accurate and relevant results than its competitors. The company also emphasized a simple, user-friendly interface that contrasted sharply with the cluttered designs of other search engines at the time. Another aspect of Google's rise was embedding Google in various software packages delivered by computers and phones, which has led to accusations of monopoly, unfair trade practices and several lawsuits and fines in different parts of the world. Today, Google remains a cornerstone of the internet, continuously evolving to meet its users' needs and shaping the digital landscape in the process. Google's relentless focus on improving its search technology, strategic acquisitions and developing complementary products and services helped it become the leading search engine globally. This ongoing evolution promises a future where Google will continue to innovate and make our digital experiences even more seamless and enriching.
