Revolutionary War Ends (US)(1783): September 3

On September 3, 1783, the American Revolution officially ended with the signing of the Paris Treaty of 1783. Also known as the War of Independence, it was a conflict between 13 North American colonies and the British Crown. The war started with skirmishes between militiamen and the British troops in Lexington and Concord in 1775 before becoming a war by the following summer. Colonial troops received aid from the French Army, turning the conflict from a civil war into an international war. Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, was the decisive battle. However, active hostilities did not cease until April 15, 1783. In September, the English and American governments signed the treaty ending the conflict. The treaty defined the sovereignty of the United States, bounded by Canada in the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the West.

Skyscraper Day (1856): September 3

Skyscraper Day commemorates the birthday of Louis H. Sullivan on September 3, 1856. A mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright, Sullivan is considered the father of the American skyscraper. His most famous buildings include the Guaranty Building in Buffalo, New York; Wainwright Building in St. Louis, Missouri; Schiller Building and Theater in Chicago, Illinois; and the Auditorium Building in Chicago, Illinois. To be considered a skyscraper today, a building must have a minimum height of 150 meters (about 492 feet) and a minimum of ten floors per the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The first structure to be referred to as a skyscraper was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, completed in 1885. This 10-story building, standing approximately 138 feet tall, is often credited as the first to use a skeleton frame with a steel infrastructure, allowing for greater height and stability. In a skeleton frame, the walls do not bear the weight of the building; the frame does. This was a huge advancement in structural engineering at the time. Currently, the world's tallest building is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was completed in 2010 and stands at a staggering height of 828 meters (2,717 feet) with more than 160 stories. If the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia is finished at 1,000 meters (3,281 feet), it will surpass the Burj Khalifa. As of July 2023, it is 1/3 completed.

This includes access to affordable high-speed internet, digital devices (such as computers, smartphones, and tablets), and the digital literacy skills required to use these technologies effectively. Digital inclusion also ensures that digital content is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, and that digital services are designed to meet the diverse needs of all communities. WHY IS DIGITAL INCLUSION NECESSARY Digital inclusion is essential because access to technology and the internet has become fundamental for participation in many aspects of modern life. This includes education, employment, healthcare, communication, and civic engagement. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of digital access, as remote work, online learning, and telehealth services became critical to maintaining daily life. German-American Day (1683): October 6

On October 6, 1683, thirteen families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in Philadelphia and created Germantown, Pennsylvania. It was the first settlement of Germans in what would become the United States. Today marks the anniversary of that community's establishment and German Americans' contribution to the history of America. German-American Day was first declared as German American Heritage Day in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. Today, nearly a quarter of American citizens trace their ancestry to Germany. Many modern American traditions also have their roots in Germany, Christmas included, and this day celebrates that and strengthens the friendship between the two nations.

Ivy Day (IE)(1891): October 6

Charles Stewart Parnell (June 27, 1846 – October 6, 1891) was a leader in the Irish Parliament who advocated for home rule. He is considered the man responsible for giving Ireland a sense of herself. Each year, on his death anniversary, Ireland celebrates Ivy Day by wearing a sprig of ivy on the lapel. The custom derives from the short story "Ivy Day in the Committee Room" by James Joyce, who also wrote "Ulysses."

Labour Day in Australia is a National Holiday. Still, it is a bit complicated as each territory has its day to celebrate, which can occur in March, May, and October. Labour Day represents the international celebration of organized labor and was conceived first in North America. A conference of American and Canadian unions in 1884 declared May 1, 1886, as a day of strike action in support of the 8-hour day. In Chicago, a crowd of 80,000 workers were attacked by police, and six workers were gunned down. In subsequent protests, another 11 workers were killed. A further seven workers were arrested, four hanged, and a fifth killed himself to cheat the noose. Two others received life sentences. In Australia, the "Sydney Morning Herald" reported in 1890 that in Vienna, the wealthy business owners and elites were so unnerved by worker support for May Day that they placed their valuables in banks' custody. Two years earlier, Australian workers rallied to the cause of British dockworkers during the famous 'Dockers strike' of 1888. Of $48,000 contributed from overseas, more than $30,000 was sent by Australian workers. In 1891 squatters in Queensland determined to break the 'Shearers union' employed scab labor. The Shearers truck and the Queensland government sent police and armed troops to arrest strikers and put them in goal. The call for an International May Day was only partly heeded due to ideological splits in the trade union movement. May Day has gathered in strength in Australia and is now part of the worldwide celebration. However, Australia's territories also maintain their state-supported Labour Day.
