Tavistock Goose Fair, (UK): October 8

The Tavistock Goose Fair is an annual festival held in the market town of Tavistock, located in Devon, England, dating back to the early 12th century. Tavistock is one of England's oldest towns (976 AD) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2006 for its stannary (tin mining) culture dating back to the Roman occupation. It is also the birthplace of jam with scones—a treat that pairs beautifully with another Tavistock original, Lady Bedford's contribution to English culture, the afternoon cream tea. Tavistock's Goose Fair is the original English celebration following the Christian observance of Michaelmas (September 29), which began as a livestock market, particularly for geese. Geese were traditionally eaten at Michaelmas to guarantee prosperity in the coming year and given as part of the annual rent payment by farmers. Although the sale of geese is no longer a significant aspect of the fair, the event remains an important tradition in Tavistock. It serves as a reminder of the town's agricultural heritage and is a popular event in the local calendar and a regional favorite epitomizing quintessential English history and culture. How popular? Consider Christopher Hitchens (April 13, 1949-December 15, 2011), a renowned British author, journalist, and intellectual who lived in the area. He cited the Tavistock Goose Fair in his last years as one of his most treasured memories of his youth. Even Sir Francis Drake, the town's most famous son, would have attended the Tavistock Goose Fair as a boy. Now that's history! The fair has evolved over the years and is now a vibrant mix of a street market, carnival, and various entertainment events featuring merchants selling food, crafts, and miscellaneous goods, along with amusement rides, live music, and street entertainers. In recent years, the fair has expanded to include local and international cuisine, reflecting the diverse nature of the event. Tavistock's Goose Fair is held on the second Wednesday in October, attracting thousands of visitors from across the UK and beyond. A sister event in the north part of England, The Nottingham Goose Fair, began about 100 years later in 1284 (when the fictional Robin Hood roamed Sherwood Forest). Both Goose Fairs are two of the longest-ongoing festivals in Europe.

Zindajan Earthquakes (AF)(2023): October 8-15

Between October 8-15, 2023, Afghanistan suffered four 6.3-magnitude earthquakes near Herat. The United Nations reported that the quakes resulted in over 3,000 deaths, while hundreds are still unaccounted for. Key details include: The first two earthquakes have impacted more than 11,000 residents in the Zindajan district, with every home reportedly destroyed. The U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs notes over 300 families affected in other areas. As rescue operations proceed, mainly involving villagers using rudimentary tools to sift through the rubble, the casualty count is expected to grow. Local hospitals need help coping with the influx of injured patients. The U.N. has allocated $5 million from the Afghanistan Emergency Reserve for relief initiatives in response to the tragedy. While countries like Pakistan, Iran, and China have pledged aid, some organizations, including World Vision Afghanistan, believe that more than international assistance is needed. The U.S. has refrained from providing direct aid after the earthquakes, but Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that U.S. humanitarian allies are assisting with urgent relief. A third 6.3 earthquake hit the region early on the morning of the 11th. Many of the dead are still buried under the rubble of the original two earthquakes. By the 11th, the death toll from those was nearing 3,000. More casualties are expected due to this third quake. A fourth 6.3 earthquake hit Haret on October 15, 2023, adding at least two more people to the death toll. The region is no stranger to seismic activity. A June 2022 earthquake near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border resulted in over 1,000 casualties. The recent natural disaster exacerbates Afghanistan's challenges, with the Taliban takeover in 2021 leading to heightened food scarcity and poverty among its population.

Baby Loss Awareness Week (UK): October 9-15

Baby Loss Awareness Week runs in October each year. It is an opportunity for bereaved parents, family members, and friends to commemorate their babies' all-too-brief lives, knowing that thousands of other families elsewhere in the world will be doing the same. The week also provides a crucial opportunity for people to talk openly about the subject and raise awareness of baby loss. The week ends with Baby Loss Awareness Day on October 15th, a date recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day worldwide. Here in the UK, we invite you to participate in the global 'Wave of Light.' Light a candle at 7 pm and leave it burning for at least 1 hour. This can be done individually, in a group, at home, or in a communal space. Wherever you do this, you will unite with others worldwide in honor of those babies who lit up our lives for a short time. History of Baby Loss Awareness Week October 15th, 2002, was the inaugural Baby Loss Awareness Day in the UK and was initiated by a group of parents inspired by Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day in the United States. Through the sale of handmade blue and pink ribbon pins, they raised several thousand pounds for UK organizations supporting bereaved parents. 2003: The campaign saw the day expanded to a week with events across the UK. The first official 'Wave of Light' service in the UK was held at the American Church in London and attended by representatives and members of each participating organization. There were also services held across the UK from Scotland to Surrey. Once again, the ribbon pins were made and sold by bereaved parents. 2004: The campaign was a more formal collaboration between the five organizations involved, which included Sands, the Miscarriage Association, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, ARC, and Babyloss.com. The ribbon pins were commercially manufactured, and balloon releases were held in several locations. The group organized a secular service at the Royal Statistical Society in London, and there were over twenty other events around the UK. In 2006 the distinctive two-color ribbon was introduced, and bereaved parents once again made the ribbon pins with the help of their family and friends. Since 2010 Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, has played a pivotal role in the organization of the week and, since 2014, has taken a lead role in promoting the week as part of its work raising awareness of the issues surrounding pregnancy and baby loss in the UK.
