3D (Digital Detox) Day (UK): September 4

06:20 AM | -
Unplug from the digital world for a day in the UK! 3D Day (Digital Detox Day), which originated in 2020 through a collaboration between LUSH, Zoe Sugg, and #IAMWHOLE, encourages individuals to disconnect from their digital devices, fostering a connection with the physical world and those around them. Researchers and psychologists have long warned about the effects of excessive screen time, including increased anxiety, disrupted sleep patterns, and a general decline in physical activity. Throughout 3-D Day, participants are encouraged to turn off their smartphones, laptops, and other digital devices for 24 hours. The purpose? To reconnect with the offline world, engage in face-to-face interactions, and indulge in activities that don't involve a digital screen. The world is full of non-digital activities, from reading physical books to outdoor adventures. Across various communities, public events such as group hikes, book clubs, and art workshops support the initiative. Educational institutions and workplaces can participate in Digital Detox Day by organizing off-screen group activities and discussions about the impact of technology on daily life. The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of digital balance in an age where online connectivity is a double-edged sword – a tool for global connectivity that can also lead to isolation and disconnection from the immediate physical environment. In essence, 3-D Day is not just about turning off devices; it's a call to mindfulness, urging individuals to reflect on their digital habits and rediscover the joys of a life not dictated by notifications and digital demands.

Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week: September 14-20

06:20 AM | -
Many factors can make a pet seem “less adoptable.” Superstition, fear, age, poor reputation, wounds, handicap, illness, and size are each factors that contribute. However, just because a pet is unique doesn’t mean he or she wouldn’t make an excellent pet. 99% of shelters and rescue groups in the Petfinder system have housed these harder-to-place pets. These “less-adoptable” pets wait for a home nearly four times longer than the average adoptable pet, often more than two years! Nearly all less adoptable pets are euthanized in state-run facilities because they only have a few days to be adopted. Which pets are the hardest to place? 28% of Senior Pets (Over the Age of 7) 21% of Pit Bull Classified Dogs 19% of Pets with Special Needs 19% of Adult Cats What can you do? Adopt, foster, help find a home and open your heart. Visit your local Humane Society, shelter, or rescue mission, or search Petfinder.com to find your new best friend! PetFinder created Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week in 2009, celebrating on the third full week of September each year. Today it is supported by shelters and animal lovers nationwide.

Adult Day Services Week: September 20-26

06:20 AM | -
National Adult Day Services Week is an awareness campaign designed to educate the country on the services and advantages of adult day centers. Adult day centers serve the elderly by hosting social events, transitional care, and short-term rehabilitation following hospital discharge. Adult day centers are an interactive, safe and secure environment for participants requiring supervised daily care as a preferred platform for chronic disease management. While nearly half of all participants nationally have some level of dementia, other common chronic diseases include chronic hypertension, physical disability, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental illness, and developmental disability. Adult day services provide a reliable source of support, restore balance in times of crisis, and enhance caregivers' overall quality of life. Former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Adult Day Services Week on September 27, 1983; it occurs during the third complete week of September each year.

Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, Ntl.: September 13-19

06:20 AM | -
National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week raises awareness of adult education and literacy and provides access to adult education resources. Activities focus on community outreach, engagement, and methods to increase adult literacy. There are many reasons for illiteracy. If you’ve ever lived in a foreign country where you did not speak the language, then you know how hard life can be when you cannot read. You can be fully literate in your language and illiterate in another, a state compounded by different alphabets. It may also be that you never learned how to read. Perhaps you have a learning disability, which makes it hard. Unfortunately, the ability to read and write is essential to survival. National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week bridges the gap between those who cannot read and those who can.
