Ampersand Day, Ntl.: September 8

06:20 AM | -
TO & OR NOT TO & NATIONAL AMPERSAND DAY National Ampersand Day, celebrated annually on September 8, honors one of the most recognizable symbols in the English language: the ampersand (&). This quirky character, often used to represent the word "and," has a rich history that dates back centuries and remains a staple in modern writing and design. The ampersand originated from the Latin word "et," which means "and." The symbol itself is a ligature, a combination of the letters "e" and "t" written together in a cursive style by Roman scribes. Over time, this combination evolved into the unique shape we now recognize as the ampersand. The earliest known usage of the ampersand dates back to the first century CE when it appeared in Roman script. Its design has changed over the centuries, but the core concept remains unchanged. The word "ampersand" is derived from a historical phrase used in English classrooms. When students recited the alphabet, they would conclude with "and per se and," meaning "and by itself (is) and." This phrase was gradually slurred together to form the word "ampersand," which entered common usage by the 19th century. The ampersand is a versatile character in the English language. It is frequently used in company names, logos, and branding to represent partnerships or dual concepts, such as "Johnson & Johnson" or "Ben & Jerry's." It's also popular in artistic and decorative contexts, where its elegant curves add visual appeal to designs. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in academic citations, programming languages, and shorthand, where its function is as important as its style, making it both functional and stylish. National Ampersand Day was founded in 2015 by Chaz DeSimone, a designer and typography enthusiast. DeSimone was captivated by the ampersand's aesthetic, with its elegant curves and unique shape, and its historical significance, dating back to Roman script. He wanted to celebrate its role in language and design, recognizing its ability to add visual appeal and convey a simple yet powerful connection between words. The day encourages people to appreciate the ampersand's unique form and explore creative ways to use it in their work and everyday writing. Although not as frequently used as standard alphabetic characters, the ampersand remains a popular and enduring symbol in the English language. Its ability to convey a simple yet powerful connection between words ensures that the ampersand will continue to hold a special place in written and visual communication, providing a reassuring and shared cultural symbol for all of us.

Anant Chaturdashi (H): September 25

06:20 AM | -
Anant Chaturdashi is the last day of the Ganesh Utsav, which generally falls on the 14th day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. Although all Hindus celebrate this occasion, those in Maharastra who observe this religious feast are the most revelrous in devotion and dedication. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Arielle K. Sterrett Day (1999): September 17

06:20 AM | -
STERRETT'S SPIRIT INSPIRES ANNUAL DAY OF KINDNESS Arielle Kristin Sterrett (Sept. 17, 1999 – Oct. 22, 2017) was born in Plantation, Florida, the daughter of Michelle Rojas-Sterrett and Guillermo Sterrett. Raised in Kennesaw, Georgia, she was a senior at North Cobb High School and earned recognition as both an Honor and Magnet student. Sterrett's life, though brief, left a luminous mark on her school community. Described as compassionate, generous and vivacious, she engaged in a wide array of student activities—from Peer Mediation and Anti-Bully Committee to Tribal Connections, Athletic Student Council, Shop with a Warrior, Rally for Childhood Cancer, Hearts for Hooves, and serving as a peer minister and camp counselor. She had a passion for playing the flute, global warming, and endangered species, and enjoyed movies, time with friends and family, and mac-and-cheese—her favorite food. Loved ones remember her as beautiful, considerate, caring, and "above all … perfect," embodying warmth and joy to everyone around her. On Oct. 22, 2017, Sterrett passed away unexpectedly at age 18 due to breathing complications, prompting an outpouring of grief and remembrance. North Cobb High students and faculty gathered in remembrance. Teammates and friends recalled her radiant energy and supportive spirit, sharing stories of her infectious laughter, dance moves, and readiness to help without complaint. In 2018, Arielle's mother established National Arielle K. Sterrett Day, celebrated each Sept. 17—her birthday—as a tribute to the caring and generous life she led through acts of kindness—small gestures like offering hugs, sharing coffee, giving gifts, volunteering, and supporting both people and animals—to continue her legacy of love and compassion. Arielle's impact extended beyond academics and extracurriculars; she inspired inclusivity, empathy and kindness. Her memory fostered a movement—encouraging others to practice daily compassion, care for the environment, and strengthen human connection. Each Sept. 17, her legacy lives on in actions that reflect her generous heart and lively spirit. Arielle K. Sterrett will be remembered not only for the clubs she joined or the awards she earned, but for how she made others feel: seen, joyful, and loved. Her mother's innovation—transforming grief into a day of goodwill—ensures that Sterrett's kindness continues to ripple outward, year after year.

Assisted Living Week: September 13-19

06:20 AM | -
ASSISTED LIVING WEEK: PROVIDING CARE AND HOUSING FOR THE ELDERLY AND DISABLED National Assisted Living Week is observed across the United States, celebrating assisted living communities' vital role in providing care and fostering a sense of community for seniors and individuals with disabilities. This annual event, established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL), a subset of American Health Care Association, the week aims to raise awareness about the benefits of assisted living and to honor the dedicated caregivers who support residents. The primary purpose of National Assisted Living Week is to highlight the importance of assisted living facilities in enhancing the quality of life for their residents. The week-long observance focuses on promoting the benefits of assisted living, recognizing the efforts of caregivers, and encouraging families to explore assisted living options for their loved ones. WHY DO PEOPLE ENTER ASSISTED LIVING? Assisted living facilities provide a supportive environment for individuals who need help with daily activities but do not require the intensive medical care of a nursing home. Common reasons for needing assisted living include: Physical Limitations—Assistance with bathing, dressing, and mobility activities. Chronic Health Conditions—Management of ongoing health issues like diabetes, arthritis, or heart disease. Cognitive Impairments—Support for individuals with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Social Isolation—Opportunities for social interaction and community engagement to combat loneliness. AVERAGE MONTHLY COST FOR ASSISTED LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES Unlike other advanced economies, the United States does not have universal healthcare. Therefore, the cost of elder care largely falls on the family, and it can quickly deplete retirement savings. For the state to assist with costs, the family must deplete all assets and sink into poverty. The cost and quality of assisted living vary widely depending on the location, services provided, and level of care required. The average monthly cost of assisted living in the United States is approximately $4,300. This figure can fluctuate significantly, with some facilities charging as little as $2,500 per month and others exceeding $10,000 monthly for dementia care. HISTORY OF THE ASSISTED LIVING INDUSTRY The concept of assisted living as a distinct form of elder care began to take shape in the 1980s, offering an alternative to traditional nursing homes. The industry has grown significantly over the past few decades, with more than 30,000 assisted living communities operating across the United States. These facilities have evolved to provide a range of services that cater to the diverse needs of their residents, emphasizing independence, dignity, and quality of life. As most assisted living organizations are corporate entities that focus on the bottom line, the quality of care varies significantly from location to location. National Assisted Living Week serves as an important reminder of the essential role assisted living communities play in the lives of many Americans. By raising awareness and celebrating the contributions of caregivers, the observance underscores the commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care for those in need. As the population ages, the importance of assisted living facilities will continue to grow, making this annual event a crucial part of recognizing and supporting this vital industry.
