Bhaiya Dooj (Bhai Dooj, Bhau-Beej, Bhai Tika, or Bhai Phota) is a holiday celebrating sibling love. Anticipated with great enthusiasm, Bhaiya Dooj rounds out the five days of Diwali. In the Hindu lunar calendar, it occurs during the Shukla Paksha of the Kartika month. The origin of this celebration comes from a story about Lord Krishna slaying the evil demon Narkasur, after which he visited his sister Subhadra. She welcomed him with sweets and flowers and applied tilak (tika) on Lord Krishna’s forehead. Brothers call on their married sisters today and enjoy a feast. Liberation Day honors the Libyan people's victory over the four-decade-long dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi. On October 23, 2011, the National Transitional Council (NTC) declared the "liberation" of Libya following the death of Gaddafi, who was captured and killed in his hometown of Sirte just days earlier. Hence, the date and the exact time of celebration: 6:02 10/23 in the American style of writing dates. The date also falls during National Chemistry Week, an annual event that unites the American Chemical Society, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry in everyday life. Avogadro's Number defines the quantity of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole of a substance. A Mole is one of the seven base International System of Units (SI) measurements. Mole Day in schools and universities motivates students' interest in chemistry; various activities, games, and competitions are organized that explore chemistry and moles. Annual awards on Mole Day include the George Hague Memorial Travel Award and the Mole of the Year Award. Red Ribbon Week began in 1988. National Family Partnership (NFP) uses the National Red Ribbon Campaign™ to promote drug awareness. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena (March 1985), angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to ending the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. The campaign catalyzed communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. The first time a ribbon was used as an awareness symbol worn on a person was in 1979. The wife of an American hostage at the US Embassy in Iran, Penney Laingen, used a looped yellow ribbon on her lapel each day of the crisis to remind people of the situation and show support for her husband coming home. Since 1979, numerous organizations have adopted different colors of looped ribbons to raise awareness of their causes.

October 23 is the World Snow Leopard Day. This event raises awareness of the situation confronting the snow leopard, a highly endangered animal due to poaching and weaning habitats. Twelve Asian countries, Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, are committed to preserving and increasing the number of snow leopards in the wild. These countries declared October 23, the anniversary of 2013's first Global Forum on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard, International Snow Leopard Day. Kyrgyzstan president Almazbek Atambaev and the Global Tiger Initiative agreed to the first Global Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Protection plan, where more than 20 snow leopard habitats are to be preserved and protected. Snow leopard habitats are under pressure from large-scale mining activities, poaching, retaliation killings from local farmers, and climate change. 2015 was the Year of the Snow Leopard.

Champagne Day, Global: October 24 (est)

Global Champagne Day occurs in October. Champagne is a region of France, and only sparkling wines from this region are permitted to be called champagne. The beverage was invented in the 1600s by Pierre Pérignon, a Benedictine monk of the Abby of Hautvillers. One of his duties at the Abby was to care for the wine cellars. Today we know him as Dom Pérignon. The original nickname Pérignon gave champagne was "mad wine." The bubbles characterizing it were not desirable and downright aggravating to Pérignon. He was attempting to produce white wine, and quality white wines don't have bubbles. In a twist of fate, Pérignon gave in to the mad wine, developing the méthode champenoise in 1670. Pérignon spent 47 years caring for the wines of the Abby, where he developed many pressing and fermenting processes still used today. Champagne would later become the preferred beverage of the elite and the universal symbol of congratulations and celebration.
