Halloween: October 31

06:20 AM | -
Halloween is one of the most famous and celebrated holidays in the United States. Each year, on the eve of All Saint's Day, October 31, American kids and grown-ups dress up as mythical monsters or historical and pop-culture figures and honor the dead and their spirits. The ritual of trick-or-treating, knocking on the doors of neighbors dressed in costume, is a highly anticipated event and considered a right of passage in the United States. The neighbor provides a treat, usually candy, in order not to be the victim of a trick. Halloween is said to be the Catholic continuation of the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, a time when ghosts and other creatures of the night were supposed to roam the land. The holiday has been celebrated in one form or another since 834 BC. Aside from dressing up, Halloween is a celebration of food and the harvest. Pumpkins, apples, cake, and nuts are just a part of the traditional Halloween table. Carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns to ward off evil spirits is another time-honored tradition.

Unity Day (IN)(1875): October 31

06:20 AM | -
CELEBRATING VALLABHBHAI PATEL: UNITY DAY IN INDIA Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is observed annually on October 31st in India to honor the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the country's most respected leaders and a key figure in India's struggle for independence. The day marks Patel's birth anniversary in 1875 and celebrates the spirit of unity and integrity he embodied throughout his life. The Government of India established Unity Day in 2014 to commemorate Sardar Patel's crucial role in unifying India after its independence from British rule. Often referred to as the "Iron Man of India," Patel was instrumental in integrating the princely states into the newly independent nation, ensuring that India emerged as a united and stable country. His efforts laid the foundation for the modern Indian state. Unity Day serves as a reminder of the importance of national cohesion and the enduring values of unity and integrity. Unity Day includes various events and activities to promote national unity and foster a sense of collective identity among the citizens. The day typically begins with a ceremonial Run for Unity, organized in cities and towns across the country, where people from all walks of life participate in a public run to symbolize the nation's unity. In addition to the Run for Unity, the day features commemorative events such as public speeches, cultural programs, and exhibitions highlighting Sardar Patel's contributions to the nation. Schools and educational institutions often organize special assemblies, debates, and essay competitions to engage students in discussions about the significance of national unity and the lessons emblematic of Patel's life and work. Government buildings and public spaces boast banners and posters celebrating Unity Day, and special ceremonies occur at prominent locations, including the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the world's tallest statue and a tribute to Sardar Patel. UNITY DAY AND NATIONAL IDENTITY Unity Day is essential for reflecting on the values underpinning India's national identity. It reinforces the idea that despite the country's vast diversity of languages, cultures, and religions, the Indian people are committed to democracy, secularism, and the rule of law. The day encourages all citizens to work together to strengthen the bonds of unity and to continue building a nation that reflects the ideals of its founders. In essence, Unity Day is not just a celebration of Sardar Patel's legacy but also a reaffirmation of the principles of unity and integrity that are vital for India's progress and prosperity.

BRICS Summit (BR): October 21-23 (est)

06:20 AM | -
THE BRICS SUMMIT BRICS is an acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group was originally known as "BRIC" until the inclusion of South Africa in 2010. The BRICS countries are known for their significant influence on regional and global affairs due to their large, fast-growing economies and substantial impact on regional and international affairs. Collectively, the BRICS countries represent around 41% of the world's population, 24% of the global GDP, and 16% of global trade. The BRICS Summit is an annual meeting held by the BRICS countries to discuss issues of mutual interest and foster cooperation in various domains such as trade, technology, culture, and politics. These meetings provide a platform for the leaders to engage in dialogue and negotiate common positions on international matters. Here is an overview of some aspects of the BRICS Summit: The concept of BRICS began to take shape in the early 2000s. The first formal meeting in 2006 occurred on the sidelines of the G8 Summit, and the first full-fledged BRICS Summit took place in 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Economic collaboration and reform of global financial institutions are common topics at the Summit. The group has called for more representation in institutions like the IMF and World Bank. The creation of the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2014 is one of the significant achievements in this area, aimed at funding infrastructure projects in developing countries. The BRICS nations seek to balance the Western-dominated international political and economic order. They often discuss global governance, peace, security, and climate change issues. The Summit also includes cultural and people-to-people exchanges to foster understanding and friendship among the nations, including education, tourism, and sports programs. While BRICS represents a significant global force, the group faces challenges regarding internal cohesion, as the countries have different political systems, economic structures, and strategic interests. Some critics argue that these differences hinder the group's ability to act as a unified entity. However, the BRICS Summit is a vital platform for collaboration and dialogue among some of the world's most influential emerging economies. It symbolizes the shift in global power dynamics, with the group striving for a more equitable and multipolar world. WHO ARE THE BRICS AS OF SUMMER 2024? Brazil Russia India China South Africa Egypt Ethiopia Iran United Arab Emirates Malaysia

UNDERSTANDING ADHD: ADHD AWARENESS MONTH ADHD Awareness Month raises awareness about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. The event aims to educate the public about ADHD, reduce the stigma associated with it, and provide resources and support to individuals living with ADHD and their families. WHAT IS ADHD ADHD is a condition characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. It is one of the most common mental disorders in children, though it also affects many adults. The history of ADHD dates back to the early 20th century. In 1902, Dr. George Still, a British pediatrician, first described a condition resembling ADHD. He described a group of children who were impulsive, inattentive, and had difficulty with self-control, which he attributed to a defect in moral control. This early description laid the groundwork for what would later become known as ADHD. The term "Attention-Deficit Disorder" (ADD) emerged in the 1980s, and the condition was later renamed ADHD, reflecting the recognition of hyperactivity as a core feature in many individuals. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) officially included ADHD in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1980. Various organizations support this event, including CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), and the ADHD Coaches Organization (ACO). These organizations work together to provide education, support, and advocacy for individuals with ADHD, their families, and the professionals who work with them. WHAT CAUSES ADHD? The exact cause of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is not fully understood, but research suggests that it is likely due to a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Here's a closer look at what is currently known about the causes of ADHD: GENETICS ADHD tends to run in families, indicating a strong genetic component. Studies have shown that if a parent has ADHD, there is a higher chance that their child will also have the disorder. Specific genes related to the neurotransmitter dopamine, which plays a key role in attention and impulse control, have been linked to ADHD. NEUROLOGICAL FACTORS —Brain Structure and Function: Differences in brain structure and activity have been observed in individuals with ADHD. For example, certain areas of the brain, such as the frontal lobe, which is involved in executive functions like decision-making, problem-solving, and impulse control, may be smaller or less active in those with ADHD. —Neurotransmitter Imbalances: Neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine, are chemicals that transmit signals in the brain. Imbalances or deficiencies in these neurotransmitters are believed to play a role in ADHD, affecting attention, motivation, and emotional regulation. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Prenatal and Early Childhood Factors: Exposure to certain environmental risks during pregnancy or early childhood may increase the likelihood of developing ADHD. These include: Prenatal exposure to alcohol or tobacco: Smoking or drinking alcohol during pregnancy has been linked to a higher risk of ADHD in children. Premature birth or low birth weight: Babies born prematurely or with a low birth weight are at an increased risk of developing ADHD. Exposure to toxins: Lead exposure, particularly in young children, has been associated with an increased risk of ADHD. Psychosocial Factors: Although not direct causes, psychosocial factors such as family stress, early trauma, or unstable home environments may exacerbate the symptoms of ADHD. DIET AND LIFESTYLE FACTORS —Dietary Factors: While diet alone is not believed to cause ADHD, specific dietary components, such as excessive sugar, artificial food additives, and food allergies, may influence the severity of symptoms in some children. However, this is still a topic of ongoing research and debate. —Screen Time: Excessive screen time and lack of physical activity have been suggested as potential factors contributing to attention issues in some children. However, these are not recognized as primary causes of ADHD. BRAIN INJURIES In some cases, a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can lead to symptoms that resemble or exacerbate ADHD, though this is not a common cause. ADHD is likely the result of a complex interplay between genetic predispositions and environmental influences. While a family history of ADHD and specific brain characteristics can predispose an individual to the disorder, environmental factors may trigger or worsen symptoms. Understanding that ADHD is a multifactorial condition helps in approaching its diagnosis and treatment more holistically, focusing on both medical interventions and supportive environments. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ADHD? ADHD symptoms are divided into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Individuals with ADHD may exhibit symptoms from one or both categories: INATTENTION —Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities —Often makes careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities —Frequently loses things necessary for tasks and activities —Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli —Often forgetful in daily activities HYPERACTIVITY AND IMPULSIVITY —Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat —Unable to stay seated —Runs about or climbs excessively in inappropriate situations —Talks excessively —Interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games) These symptoms can lead to academic, occupational, and social difficulties. HOW PREVALENT IS ADHD? ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting an estimated 5-10% of children worldwide and about 4-5% of adults. The prevalence of ADHD varies depending on the criteria used for diagnosis and the population being studied. In the United States, it is estimated that around 6.1 million children aged 2-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ADHD Awareness Month plays a crucial role in promoting understanding and acceptance of ADHD. By raising awareness, the event helps to reduce the stigma associated with the disorder, encourages early diagnosis and intervention, and provides essential support for individuals and families affected by ADHD. Through education and advocacy, ADHD Awareness Month aims to improve the quality of life for those living with this condition.

Adopt-a-Dog Month, (AHA): October

06:20 AM | -
Consider adopting a dog during the American Humane Association's October annual "Adopt-a-Dog Month®." Each year, an estimated 3-4 million animals wait in shelters, hoping for someone to give them a safe and loving home. Most never find a hero to adopt them and are euthanized. If you're considering getting a dog, be a hero and adopt a rescue animal from your local shelter. You'll be saving a life and significantly improving yours. Dogs are amazing, supportive, and heroic companions who can make a huge difference in your world. Dogs are best friends and exercise buddies, provide animal-assisted therapy, and help with challenges. Plus, who doesn't want a fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day at work? Your local shelter is the perfect place to find dogs of every type, size, age, and personality, all waiting for a loving home. Or, if you prefer a particular breed that isn't currently available at a shelter, go online to find a legitimate breed-specific rescue group looking for adopters like you.

Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month: October

06:20 AM | -
October is ASPCA’S Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by bringing home a furry friend from your local shelter and providing a loving forever home. Should you go big or small? The choice is up to you! There is a misconception that you need a big house to have a big dog. That’s a pity because many wonderful dogs fail to find forever families simply due to their size. While these dogs have a lot of love to give, they don’t need a mansion to be happy. They need a pet parent with a big heart who loves them and takes them out for walks. If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged friend to your family, this is the month to do it. Check with your local shelter for help and programs to bring your new friend home.
