National Apple Month's primary purpose is to showcase the versatility and health benefits of apples, which are among America's most beloved fruits. Apples are not just delicious, but also packed with nutrients that can boost your health. The campaign involves various promotional activities, including apple-picking events at local orchards, apple-themed recipes, and educational programs about the nutritional value of apples. These initiatives boost the apple industry and educate consumers about incorporating more fruits into their diets. ALL THOSE APPLES: DIVERSITY AND FAVORITES Apples, with their wide variety in size, color, and taste, boast over 7,500 varieties worldwide, with about 2,500 grown in the United States alone. This diversity allows for a multitude of uses in cooking, baking, and fresh consumption, catering to a wide range of palates and preferences. Among the plethora of apple varieties, the top five most popular in the United States are: Red Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, and Honeycrisp. Each variety has its unique characteristics and uses, catering to different tastes and preferences. —Red Delicious: Known for its deep red color and mildly sweet flavor, it is a favorite for snacking. —Gala: Small and sweet, with a hint of vanilla, ideal for eating fresh and cooking. —Granny Smith: Famous for its bright green skin and tart flavor, it is preferred for baking pies and making cider. —Fuji: This apple originates from Japan and is large, crisp, and incredibly sweet, making it great for eating raw. —Honeycrisp: A newer variety that has quickly gained popularity for its perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors and its exceptionally crisp texture. Applejack Month: October

National Applejack Month occurs each year in October and celebrates the first original distilled liquor in the United States, also known as "Jersey Lightning." Applejack is an early colonial drink made from hard cider, wine, or beer. To make it, simply freeze the beverage, peel off the ice (the water component), and what remains is highly concentrated alcohol. The process is called "freeze distillation." Applejack grew in popularity when the reverend John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) worked his way up and down the Ohio River, distributing apple tree seeds to the people and instructing them on how to create applejack from the fruits of their labor. Applejack is used in various cocktails and continues to be distilled today by Lairds of Scobeyville, New Jersey, a licensed distillery since 1780.

Architecture Month, Archtober: October

Architecture Month began in Los Angeles in 2007. As the years passed, several cities joined the effort to honor their unique architectural heritage during October. In New York City, Architecture Month is "Archtober." Each city has its traditions, often paired with community education efforts designed to teach the public about architecture and what it is. Below is the original resolution establishing Architecture Month in Los Angeles. ARCHITECTURE MONTH RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles is world-renowned for its famous architects, architecture, and architectural enthusiasts; and WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Chapters of the American Institute of Architects, the AIA/LA Chapter, with nearly 3000 members; WHEREAS, the American Institute of Architects will be celebrating its one-hundred and fiftieth anniversary; WHEREAS, AIA/LA in working with the varied and diverse interests of numerous other architectural societies, historical preservationists, conservancies, et al.; and WHEREAS, the goal of better educating the community about the importance of architecture and design can lead to a more livable and sustainable community; and WHEREAS, the continued appreciation of architecture and design promotes economic vitality for a region and the advanced health of an area; and WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles is in a unique position to recognize the merits of the vast wealth of architecture already within its municipality; and WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles can further promote the idea of design excellence and the benefits of elegant density to its populace in an effort to promote a more sustainable, green and livable community; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, with the concurrence of the Mayor, that by the adoption of this resolution, the City of Los Angeles hereby officially recognizes the month of OCTOBER as being ARCHITECTURE MONTH, with the expectations that The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects each year will coordinate a series of programs in conjunction with other interested parties that promote the values of architecture and the unique character of the City of Los Angeles to the community-at-large, and, in addition, communicate the programming of these events to City Staff in such a way that the City of Los Angeles can take advantage of these educational opportunities for its constituents. Audiology Awareness Month, Ntl.: October

National Audiology Awareness Month seeks to advance public awareness of audiology and its stimulating effects on hearing protection. Types of Hearing Loss: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) results from changes in the inner ear (cochlea) and the auditory nerve. Often, these changes cause permanent hearing loss that is not treatable with medicine or surgery. Some of the known causes of SNHL include the following: age, noise exposure, genetics, malformations of the inner ear, benign tumors, illnesses, medications known to be toxic to the ear, and injury/trauma. Hearing aids are a standard solution for hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss (CHL) results from outer and middle ear changes. With a CHL, the sound is not able to travel (be conducted) efficiently down the ear canal, through the eardrum, and along the ossicles (middle ear bones). Some of the more common causes of CHL include the following: fluid in the middle ear, ear infection in either the outer and middle ear space, allergies, a hole in the eardrum, ear wax (cerumen) blockage, benign tumor, a foreign object in the ear canal, and the absence or malformation of the outer and middle ear. Mixed hearing loss (MHL) results from the presence of both an SNHL and CHL at the same time. For example, a noise-induced SNHL may get a head cold that causes fluid in the middle ear.

Bat Appreciation Month: October

Bat Appreciation Month celebrates and creates awareness about the incredible creatures that rule the night skies. Bats are mammals of the order Chiroptera and include over 1,400 species, representing about 20% of all classified mammal species worldwide. As such, bats are the second largest order of mammals after rodents and live in every part of the planet except for extreme desert and polar environments. Sizes of bats vary, ranging from the smallest with a wingspan of 15 cm to 170 cm for the largest bat species, the giant golden-crowned flying fox. They also exhibit a wide range of diets: most bat species feed on insects, but others eat fruit, nectar, small mammals, fish, and even blood, like the three species of vampire bats. Bats play vital roles in many ecosystems around the world: Pollination and Seed Dispersal: Bats are pollinators for many tropical and subtropical plants. They eat fruit and nectar, then disperse seeds, contributing to the growth of plants and trees, forming habitats for other wildlife. Insect Control: A single bat can eat hundreds to thousands of insects a night, depending on the species and size of the bat. They are essential in controlling insect populations and reducing the need for pesticides. Indicator Species: Because they are sensitive to environmental changes, bats are often considered indicator species. A decline or shift in bat populations can highlight habitat destruction or climate change issues. Nutrient Distribution: Bats also help distribute nutrients across environments. For example, when bats in caves defecate, their droppings (guano) are rich in nutrients, which can benefit cave-dwelling organisms and are harvested by humans as a valuable fertilizer. However, bats are threatened globally by habitat loss, hunting, invasive species, and diseases such as the White-nose Syndrome in North America and Europe. Also, they've been implicated in the spillover of zoonotic diseases to humans, such as the coronavirus. Despite these challenges, they are essential to our planet's health and biodiversity.

Battery Safety Month (Auto): October

Each year, roughly 6,000 eye injuries result from working with auto batteries. Prevent Blindness created this month to educate consumers on the dangers of auto batteries and how to avoid eye injuries. The organization recommends the following seven tips to prevent eye injury: BATTERY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS To prevent an accident that could cause serious eye injuries, you should follow several safety precautions when jump-starting, inspecting, or testing the battery. 1) Protect your eyes with ANSI Z-87.1 splash-proof safety goggles when working on or near a battery. 2) Never work on a battery near an open flame, such as a match, lighter, or cigarette. Batteries contain hydrogen and oxygen; a spark could ignite them, causing the battery to explode. 3) Check the battery for damage—cracks, corrosive materials, and loose wires, once a month. 4) Ensure your jumper cables are rust and corrosion-free with no exposed wires. Cables repaired with electrical tape are unsafe. 5) Do not drop metallic objects on a battery, as a spark can ignite the gases produced by the battery. 6) When jump-starting, inspecting, or testing your battery, never lean over the battery—even if you wear safety goggles. The battery could explode and damage your face and body. 7) Squeezing the battery casing may cause the sulfuric acid stored inside the battery to spill through the vents. Use a battery carrier when available, and always handle it with extreme care.
