CELEBRATING AMERICAN INDUSTRY: NATIONAL MANUFACTURING WEEK National Manufacturing Week is an annual event held in the United States to celebrate and promote the importance of the manufacturing sector to the national economy. Typically observed in October, this event brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and the public to recognize manufacturers' contributions and highlight the innovations, technologies, and skilled workforce that drive the sector. National Manufacturing Week is supported by various organizations, including the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and other industry associations, government agencies, and educational institutions. These groups collaborate to organize events, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness about the significance of manufacturing in the US economy and encourage the next generation to consider careers in this vital industry. The purpose of National Manufacturing Week is to: —Raise Awareness Highlight the critical role that manufacturing plays in the US economy, including its contribution to job creation, innovation, and economic growth. —Promote Innovation Showcase the latest manufacturing technology and process advancements and encourage companies to adopt innovative practices. —Inspire the Next Generation Encourage students and young professionals to explore careers in manufacturing by providing information on opportunities and the skills needed to succeed in the industry. —Recognize Contributions Celebrate the achievements of manufacturers and workers contributing to the sector's success. Nobel Prize Announcements: October 3-10

06:20 AM | -
The world looks forward to this week each year. The announcement of the winners of the prestigious Nobel Prize takes place. The prizes were designated in the will of Alfred Nobel (October 21, 1833 - December 10, 1896). Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite. However, he achieved 1355 patents over his lifetime. Looking to his legacy, he left most of his wealth and estate to the prize's establishment. In his will it states: "The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction; and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the holding and promotion of peace congresses." The fields recognized Are: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine The Nobel Prize in Physics The Nobel Prize in Chemistry The Nobel Peace Prize The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel The Nobel Prize in Literature The first prizes were awarded in 1901. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Papankusha Ekadashi (H): October 3

06:20 AM | -
Hindus observe two kinds of Ekadashi: yearly and monthly. Papankusha Ekadeshi is the Ekadeshi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha. Devotees fast for a day. During this celebration, one should worship Padmanabha, the lotus-navel Lord Vishnu. By so doing, Hindus believe one achieves whatever pleasures one desires. Simply by offering humility to Lord Vishnu, the rider of Garuda, one can achieve the same merit gained by performing great sacrifices over time. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Smile Day, World: October 3

06:20 AM | -
The first Friday of October is World Smile Day, encouraging people to smile. The holiday comes from the creator of the smiley face, Harvey Ball. The famous symbol was created in 1963. As the years passed, Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography, and no religion. Harvey's idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. Ever since the first World Smile Day® held in 1999, it has continued every year in Smiley's hometown of Worcester, MA, and around the world.

Unity Day, Ntl.(DE)(1990): October 3

06:20 AM | -
EAST REJOINS WEST: UNITY DAY IN GERMANY Unity Day (or Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is a momentous occasion in Germany, celebrated annually on October 3rd. The day marks the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, a historic event that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. This significant milestone brought an end to nearly four decades of division between the two German states, symbolizing the triumph of democracy and the dawn of a new era in German history. Unity Day is not just a day of celebration, but also a day of profound reflection. It commemorates the peaceful reunification of Germany after the Cold War, a testament to the successful efforts to unite a nation that had been politically, economically, and socially divided since the end of World War II. It serves as a powerful reminder of the pivotal role of freedom, democracy, and unity in shaping Germany's future. Official ceremonies, public celebrations, and cultural events across Germany mark the day. The main national celebration, held in a different city each year, features speeches by political leaders, concerts, and fireworks. It is also a day for citizens to reflect on the values of democracy and the progress made in overcoming the legacies of division. HISTORICAL CONTEXT ON CURRENT AFFAIRS The history of German reunification continues to shape the country’s politics, society, and identity. The division of Germany after World War II into the capitalist West (Federal Republic of Germany) and the communist East (German Democratic Republic) created two distinct societies with different political systems, economies, and cultures. The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, became the pivotal moment that led to the reunification process, formally completed on October 3, 1990. The reunification of Germany was challenging. The economic disparities between the East and West, known as the "Mauer im Kopf" (wall in the mind), persisted long after the physical wall came down. While significant progress has been made in closing these gaps, the lingering effects of division are still evident in some aspects of German life. Economic and social differences between the former East and West continue to influence political dynamics, voter behavior, and discussions around national identity. In current affairs, the legacy of reunification is involved in debates over regional disparities, social cohesion, and the integration of immigrants. Reunification's experiences have also informed Germany’s approach to European integration and its role in international diplomacy, particularly in advocating for peace and unity in a divided Europe. Unity Day is a poignant reminder of Germany's journey from division to reunification. It underscores the ongoing efforts to build a united and inclusive society, emphasizing the importance of overcoming historical divides to forge a common national identity and contribute positively to global peace and stability.

Virus Appreciation Day: October 3

06:20 AM | -
There are two possibilities for this day: Biological and Technological. Biological: Virus Appreciation Day commemorates the Cowpox virus, which prevented people from contracting Small Pox when administered as a vaccination. In essence, one virus prevents another virus from living, replacing a deadly virus with one that is simply inconvenient. Smallpox was a deadly disease until Edward Jenner tested his theory in 1796 by infecting an eight-year-old boy with live cowpox virus, awaiting his recovery for over ten days, then infecting him with smallpox. The boy did not get sick. Smallpox was declared eradicated on May 3, 1980, by the United Nations. Over centuries it was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide. Why this date over the anniversary of the first successful inoculation (May 14, 1796), Jenner's birthday (May 17, 1749), or day of death (January 26, 1823), is unknown. We cannot source if this is the anniversary of publishing his findings either. ______________ Technological: Virus Appreciation Day evolved to educate people about protecting themselves from computer viruses. Anyone with a computer will have encountered a virus, Trojans, and malware at some point. These destructive codes spread via attachments, networks, emails, phishing sites, and creative technological appeals like ransomware. Once contracted, these malicious codes can destroy years of work, hijack personal information and make your life a living hell. For Norton's list of the eight most destructive viruses of all time, see https://uk.norton.com/norton-blog/2016/02/the_8_most_famousco.html. As with Cowpox/Smallpox, we cannot find a release date or anniversary of any kind tied to October 3 relating to technology viruses. The first computer virus was Creeper, released in 1971 by Bob Thomas at BBN Technologies (Raytheon). This worm infected ARPANET and altered the screen display; Creeper was a test program, unlike today's malicious code. ________________ How you acknowledge this date, biological or technological, is up to you.
