Indie Week, Just a Card (UK): November 24-28

Just a Card Indie Week began in 2016 as a grassroots effort led by artist Sarah Hamilton of London to encourage people to shop their local retailers in the lead-up and through Black Friday. Each year, thousands of small businesses supporting local artisans, shopkeepers, and independent retailers go out of business due to the expansion of the internet and big box retailers. This competition decimates the availability of unique, handmade, and handcrafted gifts. The shift away from boutiques kills jobs and destroys the fabric of communities. It doesn't take much to show your support. Something as small as purchasing a card (thus the name) can keep these unique and precious companies in business. By 2018, over 50,000 businesses across the United Kingdom had signed on to participate. Look for the "Just a Card" campaign sign in the shop window and show your support, even if it is just a simple piece of candy or a paper card. Every purchase keeps these businesses alive.

Indigenous People, Ntl. Day of Mourning (1492): November 27

Today is the indigenous people of America's National Day of Mourning. Organized since 1970 by the Native Americans of New England, it's a day of protest against, and a reminder of, the genocide against them. Between 1492 and 1900, 90% of the Native American population in the United States was wiped out by guns, famine, forced relocation, and disease. The National Day of Mourning coincides with Thanksgiving Day on purpose. For Native Americans, it is a day of mourning, not one of thanks.

Intersex Day of Solidarity (1838): November 8

Intersex Day of Solidarity honors the birthday of Herculine Barbin / Abel Barbin (November 8, 1838 - February 1868), a writer who was born with both male and female genitalia. He was raised as a girl until doctors determined he should be a boy. His writings and diaries are considered the earliest on gender identity. A founding voice in the LGBTQ+ community, Barbin's story is told in the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenide. Barbin died of suicide in 1868 at the age of 29.

Irish Coffee Day (1952): November 10*

Irish Coffee Day celebrates the anniversary of the Irish coffee arriving in the United States and becoming one of the world’s most beloved cocktails. The original recipe for Irish coffee goes like this: “Cream as rich as an Irish brogue; coffee as strong as a friendly hand; sugar sweet as the tongue of a rogue; and whiskey smooth as the wit of the land.” Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco was the first to serve Irish Coffee on November 10, 1952. Joe Sheridan, a bartender, is the mixologist. Stanton Delaplane is the journalist who discovered the drink in Ireland and brought the secret formula back to the US. The original Irish coffee is believed to have been first served at the flying boat terminal in Foynes, Ireland.
