Gose Day, Intl.: November 17

06:20 AM | -
International Gose Day celebrates the unique and historical Gose beer, a style that originated in Goslar, Germany. The origins of Gose date back to the early 16th century in Goslar, a town rich in mineral springs. These natural springs significantly influence the beer's unique flavor. The style then gained popularity in Leipzig, evolving into a regional specialty. By the 18th century, Leipzig had become the epicenter of Gose production. Unlike typical German beers that adhere to the Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law), Gose defies convention by incorporating coriander and salt into its brewing process. This inclusion, coupled with lactic acid bacteria, imparts a unique sourness and salinity. The 20th century, however, saw a decline in Gose's popularity, nearly leading to its extinction. Only through the efforts of dedicated brewers and beer enthusiasts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries did the style see a resurgence, both in Germany and internationally. International Gose Day, as a result, is more than just a celebration of a beer style; it's a recognition of the resilience and evolution of brewing traditions. Breweries worldwide participate by crafting their versions of Gose and organizing tastings and educational events to spread awareness about this historic beer. The day is marked by enthusiasts sharing their experiences with Gose on social media, promoting a global appreciation of this unique style. It's a day for beer lovers to explore the complexities of Gose, understand its history, and celebrate the diversity and innovation within the brewing world. Celebration of this day began in 2016.

Guru Nanak Jayanti (S): November 5

06:20 AM | -
Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrates Guru Nanak Dev Ji (April 15, 1469-September 22, 1539), the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. It is one of the holiest days in Sikhism and may be celebrated in November or April on his birth. Ji was born in the village of Talwandi (Nankana Sahib) in present-day Pakistan. His teachings formed the basis of Sikhism, a monotheistic religion emphasizing the importance of a truthful and purposeful life. Guru Nanak Dev Ji believed in one supreme God, who he referred to as "Waheguru." His teachings centered on equality, social justice, and service to others. He rejected the caste system and believed all human beings are equal, irrespective of their social or religious backgrounds. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings form the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Some fundamental teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji include: Oneness of God—Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached that only one supreme creator exists who is formless, eternal, and all-pervading. He taught his followers to devote themselves to this one God and always remember Him. Equality—Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized the importance of treating everyone equally, regardless of caste, gender, or religion. He sought to eliminate discrimination and promote unity among all people. The importance of honest living—Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught that one should earn their living through honest means and should not exploit others. He stressed the importance of hard work, humility, and compassion. Service to others (Seva)—He encouraged his followers to serve others selflessly, as this was a way to attain spiritual growth and come closer to God. Meditation and remembrance of God (Naam Japna)—Guru Nanak Dev Ji promoted meditating on the name of God and constantly remembering Him to stay spiritually connected and attain inner peace. Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled extensively throughout his life, spreading his message and engaging in dialogues with people from various religious and cultural backgrounds. These journeys, called Udasis, took him to different parts of the Indian subcontinent and even beyond, including present-day Sri Lanka, Tibet, and the Middle East. His teachings inspire and guide millions worldwide, providing a spiritual foundation for the Sikh community.

Harvey Wallbanger Day: November 8

06:20 AM | -
Harvey Wallbanger Day celebrates the Southern California cocktail. The Harvey Wallbanger, a classic cocktail known for its distinctive combination of vodka, orange juice, and Galliano, has an exciting history of part legend and marketing genius. This drink became a staple of 1970s American cocktail culture, though its origins are somewhat murky and often debated. According to popular lore, the Harvey Wallbanger is named for a Manhattan Beach surfer named Harvey in the 1950s. As the story goes, after losing a surfing competition, Harvey drowns his sorrows in a bar where he drinks vodka, orange juice, and Galliano. His inebriated attempts to leave the bar supposedly involved him banging into walls, thus earning the drink its name. However, the more widely accepted story behind the Harvey Wallbanger is that it was the brainchild of marketing and promotional campaigns in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The drink is credited to Donato 'Duke' Antone, a legendary bartender who ran Duke's Blackwatch Bar in Los Angeles. He reportedly invented the cocktail in 1952, but it remained relatively obscure until the 1970s. The natural rise to fame for the Harvey Wallbanger came when George Bednar, then marketing director for McKesson Imports Company, which imported Galliano, a sweet, herbal Italian liqueur, launched a promotional campaign. The campaign featured a whimsical cartoon character, Harvey Wallbanger, with the catchy slogan, "Harvey Wallbanger is the name, and I can be made!" This marketing strategy was a hit, and the Harvey Wallbanger became a trendy drink. During the 1970s, the Harvey Wallbanger was synonymous with the party scene, reflecting the era's penchant for colorful and easy-to-make cocktails. Its sweet, smooth, and fruity flavor made it a hit among many drinkers. The cocktail's popularity waned after the 1970s, but it has experienced periodic revivals as part of the cocktail resurgence. Today, the Harvey Wallbanger is appreciated for its taste and quirky place in cocktail history.

Healthy Skin Month, Ntl.: November

06:20 AM | -
The American Academy of Dermatology supports National Healthy Skin Month. It aims to raise awareness about skin diseases, prevention, and care. Maintaining healthy skin combines lifestyle habits, dietary choices, and proper skincare. Here are ten tips that can help: Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining skin hydration. Hydrated skin looks more plump, elastic, and vibrant. Eat a Balanced Diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can promote healthy skin. Foods high in antioxidants can help protect the skin from damage. Protect from the Sun: Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and increase the risk of skin cancer. Moisturize Regularly: Applying a moisturizer that fits your skin type can help maintain its balance. If you have oily skin, opt for a light, oil-free moisturizer. For dry skin, a more intense, hydrating product might be necessary. Gentle Cleansing: Wash your face twice daily with a mild cleanser to remove impurities without stripping away natural oils. Exfoliate: Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and give your skin a fresher appearance. However, don't over-exfoliate, as it can lead to irritation. Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol: Smoking can prematurely age your skin, and excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate it and dilate blood vessels, leading to a flushed appearance and broken capillaries. Manage Stress: High-stress levels can harm your skin, leading to acne breakouts and other skin problems. Stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation, or hobbies can promote better skin health. Get Adequate Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Sleep is a time for your body to repair and regenerate, including your skin cells. Exercise Regularly: Physical activity increases blood flow, which helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood flow also helps remove waste products, including free radicals, from working cells. Bonus Tip: Establish a daily skincare routine that suits your skin type, including cleansing, toning, treating (with serums or spot treatments), and moisturizing. Consult a dermatologist if you need clarification on your skin's needs or before starting any new regimen.

06:20 AM | -
Canada's Home Fire Safety Week is an annual public safety campaign in November. The week aims to raise awareness about the importance of home fire safety and provide Canadians with the knowledge and tools to prevent fires and keep their families safe. During Home Fire Safety Week, fire departments across Canada host events and activities to educate the public about fire safety. These activities may include fire safety demonstrations, educational sessions, and smoke alarm installation programs. Firefighters also visit schools to teach children about fire safety and how to respond in case of a fire emergency. The week's focus is prevention, and Canadians are encouraged to take steps to make their homes safer, including installing smoke alarms on every level of the house and outside of sleeping areas, creating and practicing a fire escape plan, and ensuring that all fire hazards, such as candles and space heaters, are used safely and kept away from flammable materials. Overall, Canada's Home Fire Safety Week is an important initiative that helps to reduce the number of home fires in the country and keep Canadians safe.

Homemade Bread Day encourages people to take a crack at making their bread. Bread-baking coincides with the rise of agriculture and the dawn of the civilized world. Recently, scientists believe the art of mixing flour with liquids and baking it, even predating yeast and soda, goes back 30,000 years. The first commercial production of bread using yeast dates to Egypt in 300 BC.
