Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, celebrates its National Day on November 28th, also known as Proclamation of Independence Day or Restoration of Independence Day. This public holiday commemorates the declaration of independence from Portugal on November 28, 1975. The process of decolonization in Timor-Leste began in 1974 when Portugal initiated a series of political reforms and started to withdraw from its overseas colonies. On November 28, 1975, the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) unilaterally declared the country's independence. However, just nine days later, on December 7, 1975, Indonesia invaded Timor-Leste and annexed it as its 27th province, leading to a long and bloody struggle for independence. Timor-Leste's struggle for independence continued for 24 years, with various resistance movements fighting against Indonesian occupation. Finally, in 1999, a United Nations-sponsored referendum was held, in which the majority of the population voted for independence. Following a period of United Nations administration, Timor-Leste officially became an independent nation on May 20, 2002. National Day is a significant event in Timor-Leste, marked by various festivities and activities throughout the country. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day serves as an opportunity for the people of Timor-Leste to express their national pride and unity, as well as to honor the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence.

No Nuts November: November

No Nut November is one of those silly events that came about based upon dares, likely from a bunch of drunk college students, sometime around 2011, when it first appeared in the Urban Dictionary. There are two ways to look at this month. The G-rated version considers it a month without nuts, no cashews, pecans, or Brazil nuts (peanuts are okay as they are a legume, not a nut). The X-rated version, and why we are pretty sure a group of drunk men created this event, is No Nuts November challenges men to refrain from anything to do with their ding-a-ling and cherry sacks—the kind they come equipped with, generally at birth. The objective of No Nuts November is to ignore the eggplant and meatballs sans sauce for thirty days. It’s a rolling joke with men who will ask each other, “Have you failed No Nut November?” Yes, it’s silly. But the guys seem to have fun with this.

On the first day of the month, participants begin a 50,000-word novel to pass to the organizers by 11:59 PM on November 30. This event started in July 1999 with only 21 participants, but the number of participants has increased to over 50,000 a year. The first novel is believed to have been written around 2000 BC.

In France and several other European countries, Old Maid's Day falls on November 25, Saint Catherine's Day (Catherine of Alexandria 287AD-305AD). Saint Catherine was, among other things, the patron saint of old maids and young, unmarried girls alike. At just 18 years old, she was executed for converting to Christianity at the age of 14. She is considered one of the great martyrs of the faith. Old Maid's Day honors her sacrifice on the feast day attributed to her. It is a day for single women to get out and meet potential mates, no matter their age.
