Peace Day, World: November 17

06:20 AM | -
On November 17 each year, drive with your headlights on as a public demonstration for peace, and think about peace as you go through your daily activities. Fold some origami cranes (instructions here: http://www.peaceday.org) and place them around your city. They say if you fold 1000 cranes, you will be granted your wish. Let's fold a couple of million cranes and wish for world peace. I want you to start hanging origami cranes around in public. Let's make it so people will see them in shopping malls and parks and hang a crane in your office. Let's make it, so everyone gets a chance to be reminded about peace. Please inform your friends about it so that when people see a crane, someone can explain to them that it is a movement for peace and get them started folding and displaying their own. It will be interesting to see how long it will be before I start seeing cranes other people have folded. Hanging from street signs as I am driving around. Just put them in visible locations. Like the fence in front of the White House ;) Thank you for helping; peace and love, Peaceguy

Pecan Month, Ntl. Georgia: November

06:20 AM | -
National Georgia Pecan Month kicks off the holiday season with the fruit most people mistake for a nut. It is an awareness campaign to bring attention to the crop and its uses by the Georgia Pecan Commission. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that we had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents were so sneaky about it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!

Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week (AU): November 16-22 (est)

06:20 AM | -
PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week raises awareness about the mental health challenges faced by parents during the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy and the first year after birth. Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week aims to improve awareness and understanding of perinatal mental health conditions among the general public and healthcare providers. Doing so aims to reduce the stigma associated with these conditions, encourage parents to seek help, and promote the availability of resources and support. In addition, the week advocates for systemic changes, such as improved screening and treatment options for perinatal mental health conditions and more significant investment in mental health services. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that all parents receive the support they need to maintain their mental health and well-being during the perinatal period. Healthcare professionals, mental health organizations, advocacy groups, and community members actively participate in Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week. Activities during the week include educational workshops, seminars, and webinars aimed at healthcare providers to enhance their understanding and ability to support parents experiencing perinatal mental health issues. Support groups and mental health organizations often host events and create campaigns to share information and personal stories, fostering a supportive community for those affected. Social media campaigns using hashtags such as #PMHAW and #PerinatalMentalHealth are prevalent, helping spread awareness and connecting individuals to resources and support networks. HISTORY AND PURPOSE Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week was initiated in 2013 by Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia (PANDA). The organization recognized the need for greater public awareness and understanding of perinatal mental health conditions, which can significantly impact the well-being of parents and their families. The primary purpose of this awareness week is to highlight the prevalence and seriousness of perinatal mental health issues, such as perinatal depression and anxiety, which affect up to one in five mothers and one in ten fathers. By shedding light on these conditions, the week aims to reduce stigma, promote early intervention, and encourage those affected to seek help. Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week plays a crucial role in bringing attention to the mental health challenges faced by new and expectant parents, fostering a more supportive and informed community, and advocating for better mental health care and resources.

Personal Space Day: November 30

06:20 AM | -
Personal Space Day, established by in 2019 by non-profit For the Love of Peaches, is observed annually to promote respecting personal boundaries and understanding the concept of personal space in social interactions. The inception of Personal Space Day was driven by increasing awareness of the need for personal space in maintaining mental health and fostering respectful social interactions. In contemporary society, where crowded urban living and digital connectivity often blur boundaries, this day serves as a reminder of the importance of individual space. Give Space, the organization behind Personal Space Day, encourages empathy and understanding toward people’s comfort zones in various settings, whether at work, in public, or in personal relationships. The day highlights how respecting personal space can lead to more harmonious and positive interactions. The observance involves educational campaigns and activities to raise awareness about different comfort levels regarding physical proximity and touch. It underscores that personal space preferences can vary significantly among individuals due to cultural, personal, or psychological reasons.

Pet Cancer Awareness Month, Ntl.: November*

06:20 AM | -
National Pet Cancer Awareness Month sponsored by the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, was first marked in 2005; the month-long awareness campaign focuses on pet cancer, its causes, and its devastating aftermath. Many pet owners don't know how to care for their pets to help them avoid cancer. Some are well-intentioned, like vegan and vegetarian owners who choose to feed their cats with carrots or legumes, a diet severely detrimental to a carnivore's health and life. Others believe in treating their furry friends with anything from chocolate to too many treats. November, leading into the indulgent holiday season, is the month set aside to educate pet parents on how best to take care of our pets, from diet and exercise to domicile and environment. National Pet Cancer Awareness Month is one of two pet cancer awareness months, each with different sponsors.

Pet Diabetes Month is an international outreach and education forum seeking to provide information about diabetes in pets. Sponsored by Intervet International BV/Merck Animal Health, veterinary clinics send out flyers and brochures on pet diabetes this month, while many provide discount screenings. The origins of diabetes can be traced back to ancient times, with mentions in Egyptian manuscripts dating back to 1552 BC. However, the term "diabetes," derived from the Greek word "to siphon," was coined in the by Aretaeus of Cappadocia (129-199 AD). Over time, medical understanding of the condition has evolved significantly. Still, it was in the 1921 discovery of insulin, through the work of Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip, and John Macleod, that treatment became available. Their work began in November 1920, thus the reason for November being a focus for diabetes.

Pins and Needles Day (1937): November 27

06:20 AM | -
Pins and Needles is a day that commemorates the satirical play "Pins and Needles," which debuted on November 27, 1937. "Pins and Needles is the only hit ever produced by a labor union, and the only time when a group of unknown non-professionals brought a successful musical to Broadway," notes historian John Kenrick. It was staged and produced by members of the International Ladies Garment Workers Party as a form of entertainment during a strike. The original cast was invited to and performed at the White House in 1938.
