Revolution Day (MX)(1910): November 17

06:20 AM | -
Revolution Day commemorates the Mexican people's struggle against dictator Jose de la Cruz Porfirio Diaz Mori. Francisco Madero of the Antireeleccionistas led the rebellion. On November 20, 1910, Madero, sequestered in San Antonio, Texas, published his manifesto, the "Plan de San Luis Potosi," which compelled the people of Mexico to rebel against the oligarch's rule. The people tried. However, the November 20 revolt failed, but it sparked a revolution. Over the next ten years (including the years of the Great War 1914-1918), a civil war raged within Mexico, ending in 1920, with Mexico emerging as the constitutional republic it is today. One of the period's most colorful characters is Pancho Villa, who is considered the Mexican Robin Hood. During this struggle, the popular adventure series by Johnston McCulley, Zorro, was first published in August 1919. Revolution Day is celebrated every November 20. The holiday observance was created when the labor law changed to the third Monday of November beginning in 2006. Revolution Day is a national holiday in Mexico. For more information about Mexico and its amazing history, check out this article (with lots of pictures) from Tomas Pueyo: https://unchartedterritories.tomaspueyo.com/p/25-fascinating-facts-about-mexico

Revolution Day (RU) (1917): November 7

06:20 AM | -
One of the boldest revolutions in history (March 8, 1917 - November 7, 1917) climaxed on this day in Russia. Often referred to as the October Revolution, communism replaced Tzarist Russia with the Soviet Union. On this day, Vladimir Lenin revolted against the Provisional Government, which had been installed earlier in the year, and brought the Soviets into power. Revolution Day is a national holiday in Russia.

Romani Language, World Day of: November 5

06:20 AM | -
World Day of Romani Language acknowledges the Romani language, an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Romani people. It raises awareness about the Romani people, promoting the preservation and use of this Indian-based language and the unique culture of the people. WHO ARE THE ROMANI? The Romani people, or Roma (or Gypsies—due to a misalignment as coming from Egypt during the wane of the Roman Empire), have a complex and rich history spanning over a millennium. The Roma are an itinerate people from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent who began migrating to Europe and other parts of the world around the 11th century. Linguistic and genetic evidence points to their origin in India, particularly in today's Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana regions. As a distinct cultural group, they faced numerous challenges, often marked by discrimination and hardship. As they migrated through the Byzantine Empire into Europe, they became known for their nomadic lifestyle. This trait would become both a cultural hallmark and a source of stereotype and misunderstanding. In Europe, the Roma initially found themselves welcomed, but this reception quickly soured due to their darker complexion and mystical traditions, causing them to be marginalized and persecuted. This mistreatment reached a devastating peak during World War II with the Porajmos or the Romani Holocaust; twenty-five percent of their global population, 550,000 people, and an equivalent percentage of the Jewish population persecuted at the same time were exterminated by the Nazis. Today, the Roma are Europe's most significant ethnic minority, with communities also found in the Americas and some parts of the Middle East and North Africa. Despite these adversities, the Roma have preserved a rich cultural heritage, including a distinct language and music, art, and craftsmanship traditions. With its various dialects, the Romani language remains a central element of their cultural identity. THE ROMANI LANGUAGE UNESCO World Day of Romani Language aims to counteract the marginalization and discrimination of the Romani community and their language. The Romani language began as a subset of Sanskrit but reflects influences of Persian, Turkish, Eastern European, and localized tribal languages within its words and structure. However, the language is not monolithic. It includes multiple dialects and is an essential part of the identity and cultural expression of the Romani people. The language has evolved over centuries, reflecting a history of over 1400 years of migrations from India through Persia, Turkey, and finally, Europe. It is a testament to the resilience of the Romani community. The awareness day includes activities and events organized globally, such as linguistic conferences, cultural festivals, educational workshops, and exhibitions designed to educate the public about the history and significance of the Romani language. A primary goal of this day is to promote the inclusion of the Romani language in educational systems, particularly in regions with significant Romani populations. Inclusion preserves the language and ensures Romani children's educational rights. The day also highlights language preservation challenges for many unique cultural communities, including the need for more official recognition and support in many countries. Today, advocacy often focuses on urging governments and international organizations to take concrete steps to safeguard the Romani language and culture. UNESCO World Day of Romani Language is a significant observance that not only celebrates the linguistic heritage of the Romani people but also advocates for the rights and recognition of one of Europe's largest minority groups. It underscores the importance of linguistic diversity and the need to preserve and promote minority languages as part of the world's rich cultural tapestry.

Rural Health Day: November 20

06:20 AM | -
Rural areas in the United States often struggle with access to quality healthcare services. National Rural Health Day, an annual event observed on the third Thursday of November aims to highlight the pressing healthcare issues these often-overlooked communities face. National Rural Health Day, or NRHD, is an occasion that brings together healthcare providers, policymakers, and advocates to address the unique challenges that rural areas in the United States encounter with healthcare access. Established in 2010 by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH), NRHD has since gained recognition and momentum in raising awareness about the disparities in rural healthcare. The healthcare issues confronting rural communities in the United States are multifaceted and have far-reaching implications. Access to healthcare services is a primary concern, as many rural areas need more nearby hospitals, medical facilities, and specialists. This geographical barrier often means that residents must travel long distances to seek medical attention, which can be costly, time-consuming, and potentially life-threatening in emergencies. Moreover, healthcare workforce shortages plague rural regions. Fewer healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and mental health providers, choose to practice in rural areas due to various factors such as limited career opportunities, lower salaries, and lifestyle preferences. This shortage further exacerbates the healthcare access problem, leaving rural residents with fewer options for care. Financial challenges also play a significant role in the healthcare struggles faced by rural communities. Many rural residents are uninsured or underinsured, making healthcare unaffordable for a considerable portion of the population. Rural hospitals and clinics often operate on thin margins, and the closure of these facilities is a growing concern. When a healthcare facility shuts down in a rural area, it can have dire consequences, leaving residents with even fewer options for care. Mental health disparities are another critical issue. Rural communities experience higher rates of mental health issues, substance abuse, and suicide compared to their urban counterparts. The lack of mental health providers and services compounds these challenges, making it difficult for individuals in rural areas to access the care they need. National Rural Health Day addresses these issues by raising awareness and advocating for solutions. It is a platform for stakeholders to discuss policy changes, innovative healthcare delivery models, and initiatives to improve healthcare access and quality in rural America.

Sadie Hawkins Day: November 1

06:20 AM | -
Sadie Hawkins Day commemorates the holiday in Li’l Abner, an Al Capp comic strip. The event honors the Sadie Hawkins dance where girls ask boys. On this day, girls ask boys out to a dance or date. In the comic strip Li’l Abner, Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of Hekzebiah Hawkins, one of the earliest settlers of Dogpatch. She was perpetually waiting for a suitor. When she was 35 and still unmarried, her father called all the available men in the town to join the foot race, with marriage to Sadie as the prize for the winner. However, Sadie had her eyes on Adam Olis. Unfortunately, Olis is already courting Theresa Richmond, the daughter of Dogpatch's most prominent potato farmer. Because it was such a good idea, the spinsters of the town decided to make Sadi Hawkins day a yearly event on the first Saturday of November, when the original ran in the comic strip.

Safety Razor Day (1904): November 15

06:20 AM | -
Safety Razor Day marks the anniversary of the invention of the safety razor on November 15, 1904, created by King C. Gillette and Willian Nickerson. King, a traveling salesman by trade, developed the idea of a razor with a safe, inexpensive, and disposable blade out of necessity. Assured his idea was great, he consulted with technical experts everywhere he went. But, like most great ideas, he was rebuffed and turned down repeatedly. In 1901 he met MIT graduate Willian Nickerson. Nickerson saw the merit in the idea, and together they developed it. The rest is history.

Sandwich Day (1718): November 3

06:20 AM | -
Sandwich Day honors one of the oldest methods of serving food, the sandwich. The first recorded sandwich was made by Hillel the Elder, a rabbi who lived in the first century BC. He chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine placing the paste between two matzoh flatbreads. His is the first known version of this popular meal. This dish, the Hillel sandwich, is still served during Passover. The term "sandwich" was first recorded in 1762 by the English author Edward Gibbons. The cooks at London's Beef Steak Club, a gaming club, invented the bread-flanked sandwich we know today. The word sandwich is the namesake of Lord John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792). An avid gambler, he took his meals at the card table. Whenever he was hungry, his servants would bring him cold cuts placed between two slices of bread. Soon after, his gambling mates also ordered "the same as Sandwich." Lord Montagu was born before the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This day, November 3, corresponds to his birthday in the Julian calendar of November 13, 1718.
