Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (US/CA): May 4-10

06:20 AM | -
Children's Mental Health Awareness Week occurs during the first full week of May and is observed in Canada and the United States by various organizations. Children's Mental Health Day occurs on Thursday during the week. It is also known as the Green Ribbon Campaign, a positive message campaign designed to provide hope and funding for resources dedicated to children's mental health. In Canada, see Children's Mental Health Ontario for details.

Chocolate Chip Day, Ntl.: May 15

06:20 AM | -
National Chocolate Chip Day celebrates chocolate chips. Chocolate chips are often added to cookies, cakes, and even cocoa drinks. Ruth Graves Wakefield of Massachusetts created chocolate chip cookies in 1938. She broke a Nestle chocolate bar into pieces and added the chips to her cookie recipe. Because of the recipe's popularity, Nestle agreed to print the recipe on the back of the chocolate bar. By 1940, Nestle began selling chocolate chip packs. National Chocolate Chip Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.

Chocolate Custard Day, Ntl.: May 3

06:20 AM | -
National Chocolate Custard Day has a bit of contention. Nobody knows its origin or whether May 3 or May 5 is correct. Going back over the past ten years, we find it marked on both. Therefore, we're keeping it as the third because it comes first. However, go for it if you want to celebrate on the fifth or from the third through the fifth. One can never have too much chocolate custard! National Chocolate Custard Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.

Chocolate Custard Month: May

06:20 AM | -
What is the difference between custard and pudding? Custards have eggs, and puddings do not. Custards thickened through egg protein. Puddings thickened through starch (tapioca, cornstarch, etc.) Custards are not vegan. Puddings are vegan if made with soy, rice, or coconut milk. Whichever you prefer, enjoy eating chocolate all month in a pie, torte, or custard. National Chocolate Custard Month is an unofficial event with no sponsor.

Chocolate Festival, Grenada (GD): May 22-27

06:20 AM | -
The Grenada Chocolate Festival began in 2013 on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean. Activities include “Dance the Cocoa,” (moving your feet) over the cocoa beans in large bowl-shaped containers to shell them. The festival allows visitors to chocolatier a real-life cocoa plantation and enjoy cooking demos, chocolate-making demos, and plenty of chocolate tastings. It’s a festival of culinary delight and a chocolate lover’s paradise.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day, Intl. (1820): May 12

06:20 AM | -
International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Fibromyalgia Awareness Day occurs each year on the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820). Nightingale was believed to have ME/CFS. The CFIDS Association of America champions the international day and week observed worldwide, most notably in England, South Africa, the US, Canada, and Australia. The purpose of the week and focus day are to draw attention to the illness, inform the public of their options should they be struggling with ME/CFS or suspect they have it, and raise funds toward finding a cure. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating chronic illness. This is a middle age disease, striking primarily women, people in their 30s and 40s during the prime of life. However, it can afflict any gender and any age. Over one million people in the US and tens of millions worldwide suffer. Symptoms include: Visual blurring, light sensitivity, and eye pain Difficulty maintaining an upright posture Dizziness, balance problems, and fainting Chills and night sweats Trouble sleeping Gastrointestinal disturbances Allergies and sensitivities to foods, odors, chemicals, medications Brain fog and cognitive impairment Gynecological problems, including PMS Irritability, depression, and mood swings The severity of ME/CFS varies greatly. About 25 percent of people with ME/CFS are disabled by the illness, and most symptoms are invisible to others. Common conditions that occur along with ME/CFS include: Fibromyalgia Orthostatic intolerance Irritable bowel syndrome Interstitial cystitis Temporomandibular joint disorder Chronic pelvic pain Multiple chemical sensitivity Studies show fewer than 20 percent of ME/CFS patients in the United States are correctly diagnosed. Diagnosing ME/CFS is challenging because there is still not one conclusive diagnostic test or biomarker. The cause is unknown, and no cure exists for ME/CFS. This event began in 1992.

Cinco de Mayo (MX) (1862): May 5

06:20 AM | -
A lot of Americans think Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. It's not. Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for "May Fifth," marks the anniversary of the Mexican army's entrenchment and ultimate victory in Puebla against the French army on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. This conflict ran concurrent with the American Civil War (1860-1864) and lasted from 1861-1867. The French were ultimately defeated. Americans use Cinco de Mayo as a day to celebrate Mexican culture, specifically the music, food, and drinks. Ironically, it's not a big deal in Mexico, but it might as well be Latin Saint Patrick's Day in the United States. It's huge. Like many events, Canada and other nations globally have begun hosting Cinco de Mayo celebrations in their countries as a tribute to one of the world's favorite food categories, Latino culture, and the now iconic beverage of tequila.

Civility Awareness Month, Global: May

06:20 AM | -
For thirty-one days, at home, work, or school, people worldwide are encouraged to practice civility by being considerate, polite, and helpful during Global Civility Awareness Month.

Civility Awareness Month, Intl.: May

06:20 AM | -
INTERNATIONAL CIVILITY MONTH: FOSTERING GLOBAL RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING Every May, International Civility Month becomes a global platform, uniting people from all cultures and communities to promote respect, courtesy, and considerate behavior. This initiative, led by the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI), transcends borders and unites us all in enhancing civil discourse and interactions worldwide, making each participant feel part of a larger, global movement. International Civility Month aims to raise awareness about the importance of civility in everyday life and to encourage individuals and organizations to embrace practices that foster mutual respect and understanding. The observance seeks to remind people that civility is essential for harmonious living, constructive dialogue, and the well-being of society. WHAT IS CIVILITY? At its core, civility is about showing respect for others and adhering to social norms of polite behavior. It involves recognizing the inherent dignity in every person, even amidst disagreements, and striving to create a positive environment through considerate actions and words. These actions and words could include holding the door for someone, saying 'please' and 'thank you ', or offering a kind word. Civility extends beyond mere manners; it embodies a broader commitment to constructive and respectful interactions in all aspects of life. HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR CIVILITY? By practicing civility, individuals not only contribute to a more respectful society but also enhance their personal relationships and professional success. Active listening, showing appreciation, using polite language, and being mindful of others' feelings are not just components of civility but also tools for personal growth and fulfillment. Clean up Your Room Day: May 10

06:20 AM | -
Welcome to National Clean Up Your Room Day, a favorite with parents and a not-so-favorite with kids. This event has grown through organic popularity. National Clean Up Your Room Day is a great time each year to get organized, remove toys that aren’t used anymore, outgrown clothes, and prepare for a garage sale. It just could be an extra incentive for your child if they could sell or donate what they no longer use and use that money to purchase something they do want. Parents, enjoy the day! The room will stay clean for an hour or two!
