Sultan of Terengganu (MY)(1998):March 4

06:20 AM | -
Coronation Day Anniversary of the Sultan of Terengganu: A Symbol of Royal Tradition and Unity The Coronation Day Anniversary of the Sultan of Terengganu is a significant occasion in the Malaysian state of Terengganu. It marks the enthronement of the state's monarch. This day is a public holiday in Terengganu and is celebrated with various cultural and official events, reflecting the region's rich history and royal traditions. Terengganu, located on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is known for its deep-rooted royal heritage and unique cultural identity. The state is one of Malaysia's nine royal states, where the hereditary position of the Sultan plays a pivotal role in both ceremonial and constitutional matters. The current Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, was coronated on May 26, 1998. His coronation represented the continuation of the traditional royal lineage and symbolized stability and unity within the state. The Sultan is revered as a figure of respect and plays a significant role in upholding Terengganu's cultural and Islamic traditions. The Coronation Day Anniversary is important for several reasons. It serves as a reminder of the state's rich monarchical history, which dates back centuries. Like in other Malaysian royal states, the monarchy in Terengganu is deeply intertwined with the state's identity and plays a crucial role in preserving its cultural heritage. Celebrations on this day typically include various cultural performances, religious ceremonies, and community events. These festivities honor the Sultan and foster a sense of unity and pride among the people of Terengganu. The day also provides an opportunity for reflection on the state's progress and aspirations, with the Sultan often addressing the public and outlining visions for the future. The Coronation Day Anniversary also holds significance in the broader context of Malaysia's constitutional monarchy system. It underscores the balance between traditional authority and modern governance, highlighting the unique political structure of Malaysia, where monarchs and elected governments coexist and collaborate. In summary, the Coronation Day Anniversary of the Sultan of Terengganu is significant in the state. It celebrates the Sultan's enthronement, symbolizing continuity, unity, and the enduring importance of the monarchy in Terengganu's cultural and political life. This day is a vibrant expression of the state's royal heritage and its role within the larger tapestry of Malaysia's diverse and multifaceted society.

Sunshine Week, Ntl (1751): March 16-22

06:20 AM | -
The Freedom of Information Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 4, 1966. It took 12 years for the landmark legislation to go from idea to legal statute, largely thanks to the dogged efforts of California Congressman John E. Moss. National Sunshine Week is an awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the Freedom of Information Act and its contributions to accurate journalism. It is observed throughout the nation by media organizations, schools, universities, and libraries and coupled with a public relations campaign. The event first appeared in 2005. Sunshine week marks the birthday of James Madison, the father of the US Constitution. Madison was born on March 16, 1751.

Swallow Day, San Juan Capistrano (US-CA): March 19

06:20 AM | -
Swallow Day marks the swallows' annual return to San Juan Capistrano, California, each year from their winter migration. The day is part of the Fiesta de las Golondrinas, the Festival of the Swallows, and Saint Joseph's Day. The swallows' return to Mission San Juan Capistrano in California symbolizes the arrival of spring and has become an annual celebration of renewal, nature, and community spirit. The swallows, specifically the cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota), are small migratory birds known for their long-distance journey from Goya, Argentina, to San Juan Capistrano and other parts of North America. These birds create unique, mud-built, gourd-shaped nests in the eves and walls of man-made structures, including the Mission San Juan Capistrano. Cultural Importance The phenomenon of the swallows returning to the Mission San Juan Capistrano around St. Joseph's Day (March 19) each year has symbolized the changing seasons and the enduring nature of life. This event has been romanticized and popularized through songs, stories, and local lore, turning it into a celebration of hope, faith, and continuity. The mission, founded in 1776 when California was part of Mexico, has a rich history intertwined with the lives of the Native American people and Latino cultures. Native American Tribes Before the arrival of the Spanish missionaries, the area around San Juan Capistrano was inhabited by the Acjachemen tribe, also known as the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians. The Acjachemen people had a rich culture and spiritual connection to the land and its creatures, including the local bird populations. Much of the cultural significance attributed to the swallows originated from their traditions. The Acjachemen culture, like many Native American tribes, has traditions that reflect a deep respect and reverence for nature, including birds. Birds represent messengers or symbols of freedom, transformation, and connection to the natural world. The swallows' migratory patterns and their return could be seen within such frameworks of understanding and respecting natural cycles, even if not explicitly celebrated in the same manner as the modern event at the mission. Celebrations of the Swallows' Return Celebrating the swallows' return to Mission San Juan Capistrano includes a festive which draws visitors worldwide. Festivities include parades, educational events, musical performances, and the ringing of the historic mission bells. These celebrations honor the birds' return and educate the public about the history of the mission, the local ecology, and the importance of conservation efforts to protect migratory bird populations. In recent years, efforts have focused on encouraging the swallows to return to the mission through the use of artificial nests and sound systems broadcasting swallow calls, as urban development and changes to the mission structure have caused the birds to seek alternative nesting sites. These conservation efforts underscore the ongoing relationship between the community, the mission, and the swallows, symbolizing a collective desire to preserve this unique natural phenomenon for future generations.

Tamale Day, Ntl.: March 23

06:20 AM | -
Richard Lambert created this holiday in 2014. In his own words, why: "One day in 2014, I googled "National Tamale Day" to discover there wasn't one. I couldn't believe it! More than twelve hundred foods have their own day, even moldy cheese on October 9, yet no tamale day existed. That's what got the ball rolling for me to create a day for everyone to enjoy the wonderfulness of tamales. The recognition of National Tamale Day also seems to be coinciding with the growing public interest. Festivals, special events, and tamale eating contests are popping up everywhere. We list more than 40 festivals and special events across the country that are devoted to tamales. Seven of them were established in the last year alone. Even Oslo, Norway, held its first tamale festival. last year."

Telecommuter Appreciation Week, Ntl. (1847): March 2-8

06:20 AM | -
National Telecommuter Appreciation Week was created in 1993 by the American Telecommuting Association to bring awareness to the positive aspects of having employees work from home one or more days a week. Though no longer sponsored, the week falls during the week of Alexander Graham Bell’s birthday, March 3. With the advent of the Internet, telecommuting has become popular by allowing real-time interaction with employees and managers from remote locations worldwide. National labor statistics show the trend toward temporary and remote workforces will continue to grow, with more and more people choosing to work from home. The pandemic of 2020-2022 made this essential. This week highlights the benefits of telecommuting from three viewpoints: The individual, the employer, and society. The key benefits to each group are as follows: The individual and family benefit from saved time, lower commuting expenses, reduced stress, more scheduling flexibility, greater satisfaction regarding work, and the pleasure of spending more time together. The employer benefits from greater productivity, loyalty, and job satisfaction, a stronger focus on job performance, better recruiting and longer retention of the most productive employees, and reduced overhead and facility expenses. Society benefits from reduced traffic congestion minimized air pollution, lower requirements for (and strain on) transportation infrastructure, and decreased demand scarce and non-renewable resources like fossil fuels.

The inaugural World Tennis Day centered around two high-profile events: the BNP Paribas Showdown in New York and Hong Kong. These events featured current and former professionals competing and demonstrations of the ITF’s Tennis10s program. World Tennis Day is a global grassroots initiative. The ITF encouraged its 210 national associations to support the day with their club activities to attract new tennis participants. By 2013, World Tennis Day activities took place in 58 countries. World Tennis Day occurs on the first Monday in March.
