Terri's Day (2005): March 31

On March 31, 2005, Terri Schindler Schiavo died in a Florida hospice after a court ordered the removal of a feeding tube and prohibited anyone from assisting her in eating. Terri had been beaten severely by her husband, receiving multiple internal injuries and brain damage. Yet, he remained her legal guardian and in control of her life throughout her hospitalization. He argued that she would not have wanted prolonged artificial life support with no chance for recovery in a vegetative state. Hospital photos show her interacting with people and not in a vegetative state. Her husband then went to court to get a ruling to remove her feeding tube and any oral assistance in eating (she could swallow food), thus starving her to death. That decision and the surrounding legal struggle proved unpopular with Terri's parents, friends, and religious institutions worldwide. That led to March 31 earning the name "Terri's Day," a day to advocate for human rights, patient rights, and the removal of abusers and those convicted of domestic violence from the role of legal guardian.

Theatre Day, World: March 27

World Theatre Day is the creation of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on March 27 by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which, at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on that year's theme. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau (France) in 1962. What is known as the International Message is translated into more than 20 languages, read for tens of thousands of spectators before performances in theaters throughout the world, and printed in hundreds of daily newspapers. Colleagues in the audio-visual field lend a fraternal hand, with more than a hundred radio and television stations transmitting the message to listeners across the five continents.

HOW TO AVOID GETTING TICKS Use Tick Repellents: Apply insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or lemon eucalyptus oil to exposed skin. Wear Appropriate Clothing: In areas with ticks, Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Tucking your pants into your socks can provide additional protection. Choose Light-Colored Clothing: This makes it easier to spot ticks on your clothes before they attach to your skin. Stay on Trails: When hiking or walking in wooded or grassy areas, stay on clear, well-traveled paths where there is less likelihood of encountering ticks. Check for Ticks: After outdoor activities, check your entire body for ticks. Pay special attention to underarms, in and around ears, inside the belly button, behind knees, between legs, around the waist, and especially in hair. Shower Soon After Being Outdoors: Showering within two hours of coming indoors can reduce the risk of getting Lyme disease and may help wash off unattached ticks. Dry Clothes on High Heat: Ticks can survive a wash cycle, so drying clothes on high heat for 10 minutes after coming indoors can kill any ticks on your clothing. HOW TO PREVENT PETS FROM GETTING TICKS Regular Tick Treatments: Use veterinarian-recommended tick prevention products on your pets. Regular Checks: Check your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors. Be sure to look between their toes, inside their ears, between their legs, and around their necks. Keep Your Yard Tidy: Maintain your yard to make it less attractive to ticks by mowing the lawn regularly and removing tall weeds. Avoid Tick Habitats: When walking your dog, avoid areas where ticks are likely to be found, such as dense wooded areas and tall grasses. Following these preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of tick bites and associated diseases. Tick Bite Prevention Week serves as a timely reminder of the importance of these practices, especially during the warmer months when ticks are most active.

The United States created Transgender Day of Visibility in 2021 via a Presidential proclamation as an annual observance honoring the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities, including their struggles, activism, and courage. A person identifies as transgender when he or she feels and believes the sex they were born with is not their authentic gender. For example, a male will identify and prefer to live as female and visversa. Changing one's biological sex, or as the community prefers, gender, can involve hormone drug therapy and surgery, but not always. Sometimes it is as basic as changing names, pronouns and wearing different clothes. A transgender woman is born male but identifies as female. A transgender man is born female but identifies as male. Transgender is not the same as being gay, lesbian or bisexual. These terms describe sexual orientation and a person's preference in romantic and sexual relationships. Transgender refers to the gender (biological sexual) identity, how individuals see themselves regardless of their biology or sexual orientation. Transgender people identify as heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or a combination. Roughly 0.03 percent of the global population identifies as transgender.

Trisomy Awareness Month raises awareness of trisomy, a rare condition in which a person has three copies of a chromosome in a cell rather than the usual two. Trisomy manifests differently depending upon which chromosome receives an extra copy. Trisomy 18, for example (when the 18th chromosome has a third copy), occurs in 1 in 7,000 live births. Trisomy 13 (13th chromosome having a third copy) happens in 1 in 10,000 live births. How these extra chromosomes affect individuals varies—additional and bigger heart chambers, ductus arteriosis, smaller or bigger sizes of different organs, etc.
