The Ashes is a cricket competition every two years between England and Australia and is one of the most celebrated rivalries in international cricket. The name "Ashes" began during an 1882 match at the Oval when Australia beat England on English soil (scandalous!) for the first time. A British newspaper, The Sporting Times, published a satirical obituary lamenting the death of English cricket, noting, "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." Two years later, England visited Australia, with team captain Ivo Bligh vowing to return with "the ashes" of English cricket. England won two out of three matches, prompting a group of Melbourne women to present Bligh with a small urn, rumored to contain the ashes of a burnt cricket ball, and the mythical "Ashes" trophy was born. Each year a replica of that urn is presented as the trophy (though the original has remained at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London, regardless of who wins the series). The Ashes consist of five or more test matches in venues alternating between England and Australia. Each game occurs over five days, with six hours of play daily. Each team gets two innings (turns at bat), and the team with the most total runs at the end of the match is declared the winner. A theater understudy is a performer who learns the lines, blocking, and choreography of one or more positions in a stage production, with the primary purpose of being prepared to step in and perform those roles in case the leading actor is unable to complete due to illness, injury, or other unforeseen circumstances. Understudies are essential in ensuring the smooth running of a theatrical production, as they provide a backup in emergencies. Understudies typically attend all rehearsals, closely observing the leading actor and taking notes on their performance, so they can accurately replicate the role if needed. They may also participate in understudy rehearsals to practice their assigned roles with other cast and crew members. In some cases, an understudy might also be a part of the ensemble or have a minor role in the production, allowing them to be actively involved in the show while still being prepared to step into a more prominent role if required. It's important to note that understudies are different from standbys and swings. Standbys are performers exclusively dedicated to covering the lead role or roles, while swings are responsible for covering multiple ensemble tracks and sometimes principal roles in a production. On the other hand, understudies often have their own parts in the show in addition to learning the roles they are understudying. Being an understudy requires immense dedication, adaptability, and professionalism. They seamlessly step into a role at a moment's notice while still delivering a high-quality performance for the audience.

The Tiananmen Square Massacre, also known as the June 4th Incident, was a significant event in the history of modern China. It took place in 1989, at a time of considerable political and economic reform and social unrest. Under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, China was transitioning from Maoist policies towards a more open economy. This period of change led to a rise in expectations and awareness among the population, particularly the students and intellectuals who started to demand more political freedom, democratic reforms, and an end to corruption. In April 1989, thousands of students initially gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to mourn Hu Yaobang's death, a liberal reformist purged from the Communist Party. The gathering quickly became a significant pro-democracy movement, with protestors demanding greater political transparency, freedom of speech, and other democratic rights. The Chinese government declared martial law, and on June 3-4, 1989, the Chinese military was deployed to disperse the protestors. The troops forcefully cleared the square using rifles and tanks, resulting in hundreds of deaths. The Chinese government's official death toll was 200, but estimates from other sources vary from several hundred to potentially several thousand. The event had profound impacts on Chinese society. It led to a clampdown on political dissent and temporarily halted the economic reforms. Internationally, the Chinese government faced widespread condemnation, leading to sanctions from several countries. The Tiananmen Square Massacre is a heavily censored topic in today's China. The Chinese government strictly controls information about the event. Public discussions, commemorations, or criticisms of the incident are generally prohibited. Many younger Chinese citizens do not know of the event due to the government's efforts to erase it from the public consciousness and history books. However, the memory of the event survives among some groups and individuals who privately acknowledge and commemorate the incident. Abroad, Chinese dissidents and human rights organizations keep the memory alive by marking the anniversary and calling for a re-evaluation of the event. The Chinese government's handling of the Tiananmen Square Massacre remains contentious in its relations with Western democracies. National Tire Safety Week is a USTMA initiative to rally the tire industry in a focused effort to help drivers learn simple yet essential steps to maintain their tires. USTMA is the national trade association for tire manufacturers. “Technology and sophisticated engineering are the heart and soul of tires,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president, and CEO. “Tire manufacturers go to great lengths to produce tires for long-lasting, safe performance. And that commitment to quality extends beyond the factory. Tire manufacturers want to be a resource to consumers to help them understand the importance of regular maintenance to safety and how best to take care of their tires.” Tire manufacturers, retailers, and others nationwide work to educate motorists about proper tire care and maintenance. Participating retail outlets join the nationwide effort to promote tire care through advertising, promotions, free tire pressure checks, and community and media outreach. This event can occur at the end of May or early June, with the actual date posted 45-60 days before.

The focus on toothbrushing is significant due to its foundational role in preventing dental diseases. National Toothbrush Day encourages people to replace their toothbrushes regularly, ideally every three to four months, and to brush their teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste. The toothbrush dates back to antiquity. The earliest forms of toothbrushes were "chew sticks" or "tooth sticks," twigs with frayed ends used to clean teeth, found in various cultures, including the Egyptians and Babylonians around 3500 BC. The bristle toothbrush, resembling the modern version, is believed to have originated in China during the Tang Dynasty (619-907 AD). Made with bristles from pigs' necks and handles of bamboo or bone, this type of toothbrush represented a significant advancement in oral hygiene tools. It was in the 17th century that Europe discovered toothbrushes brought from China by travelers. The design evolved, with the first mass-produced toothbrush manufactured by William Addis in England in 1780. The invention of nylon by DuPont in 1938 led to the replacement of animal hair bristles with nylon, marking the birth of the modern toothbrush. Today, toothbrushes come in various shapes, sizes, and types, including manual and electric, catering to diverse needs and preferences. However, the fundamental purpose remains the same: to maintain oral hygiene and health. National Toothbrush Day serves as a reminder of the simple yet crucial practice of toothbrushing. Through education and advocacy, the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives aims to improve oral health outcomes and promote the understanding that a healthy mouth is integral to overall health and well-being. Trojan Horse (1184 BC): June 11

June 11, 1184, BC is when the Mycenaean Greeks used their secret weapon, the Trojan Horse, to gain the advantage and defeat the city of Troy. The Trojan Horse was designed by carpenter Epeius. The large wooden structure was hollow and concealed several soldiers inside it. The Greeks brought this statue to the gates of Troy, leaving it. Their agent Sinon convinced the Trojans the Greeks had abandoned the war and had left the horse as an offering to the goddess Athena. Unbeknownst to the Trojans, the Greeks had sailed to one of the adjacent islands to wait for the horse to be moved inside the gates of Troy. Once the Trojans moved the offering inside the city walls, the soldiers inside came out, unlocked the gates, and let the balance of the Greek army into the city. Now in full force, the Greeks razed Troy, and the war ended. The Trojan horse has been iconic ever since and is often invoked as a metaphor for subversion and stealth.
