Happiness Happens Day: August 8

06:20 AM | -
During Happiness Happens Month in the United States, August 8 is set aside as Happiness Happens Day, the first of which was in 1999. "Celebrating happiness doesn't mean you're never unhappy," says Society Founder Pamela Gail Johnson. "Life is a mixture of good and bad events and moments." Promotions include social media, where Happy-a-Thon Ambassadors volunteer to send five happy social media messages that day.

Happiness Happens Month: August

06:20 AM | -
The Secret Society of Happy People champions August's Happiness Happens Month in the United States. The month began after the Society declared August 8 as Happiness Happens Day in 1999, and members requested to expand the celebrations to the month. "The purpose of the celebration is to encourage people to talk more about happiness and simply celebrate being happy," says Society Founder Pamela Gail Johnson. "Celebrating happiness doesn't mean you're never unhappy," says Pamela. "Life is a mixture of good and bad events and moments. Unfortunately, our culture glamorizes unhappiness more than it celebrates happiness." The Society sets one day aside to focus on activities, August 8. Promotions include social media, where Happy-a-Thon Ambassadors volunteer to send five happy social media messages that day. When they volunteer, they'll get a guide through ideas, sharing what makes them glad to encourage conversations. For more details, see the website at: http://www.sohp.com. Created in 2000.

Hariyali Teej (H): August 15

06:20 AM | -
Hariyali ( greenery) Teej (third day) is an important holiday for married Hindu women seeking marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands. Hariyali Teej is the 3rd day of the first fortnight in the Hindu month, Shravan (Sawan). It is a celebration of the earth's renewal after a very hot and dry summer. Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, is also worshiped on this day. Legend has it that the Goddess Parvati once underwent a self-imposed penance to demonstrate her devotion to Lord Shiva and was born and reborn on earth 108 times before he took her as his wife. The day was "Teej of Shrawan Month" when Lord Shiva took her as his wife, then Devi Parvati promised every woman who invokes Parvati would experience marital bliss. Women dress up in colorful clothes, wear jewelry, apply mehandi, wear colorful bangles and fast the whole day. The Hariyali Teej celebration comprises dancing and singing. 06:20 AM | -
At 15:29 Washington DC time and 23:59 August 30, 2021, local time, the final C-17 plane lifted off from Afghanistan, ending nearly 20 years of occupation and war. The 16-days preceding saw over 123,000 civilians, diplomats, allies, and personnel evacuated, the largest extraction mobilization by air in history. The US invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. As of July 2022, the Taliban has regained control of the country and reversed most of the democratic, progressive policies and privileges adopted in the previous twenty years. Women have suffered disproportionately, losing access to work, school, and personal independence. Poverty, starvation, and authoritarian rule have returned and are the norm.

African Descent, Intl. Day for People of: August 31

06:20 AM | -
The United Nations will celebrate the International Day for People of African Descent for the first time on August 31, 2021. The observance aims to honor the remarkable contributions of the African diaspora globally and to eradicate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent. The UN asserts that all humans, irrespective of race, are born free and equal in dignity and rights, contributing significantly to the development and welfare of societies. The UN vehemently denounces racial superiority theories and any practices resulting in the discrimination of separate human races. The UN strongly condemns the continuous violent practices and excessive use of force by law enforcement against Africans and people of African descent and the structural racism in criminal justice systems globally. The Organization recognizes the Transatlantic Slave Trade as one of humanity's darkest periods, asserting the dignity and equality of the victims of slavery, the slave trade, and colonialism, especially people of African descent in the African diaspora. The year 2020 marked the midpoint of the International Decade for People of African Descent. Although some progress has been made legislatively and institutionally, racial discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion still plague people of African descent. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgency of addressing deep-seated structural inequalities and systematic racism, especially in healthcare. The murder of George Floyd in 2020 was a turning point in addressing these issues, sparking global protests against racism and racial discrimination, and leading to vital global discussions on racial justice. In response, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on protecting Africans and people of African descent against excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement. The High Commissioner for Human Rights then presented an agenda for transformative change towards racial justice and equality to the Human Rights Council.

African Descent, Intl. Day for People of: August 31

06:20 AM | -
CELEBRATING AN AMAZING PEOPLE: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT The International Day for People of African Descent, observed annually on August 31, aims to promote the worldwide contributions, culture, and rights of people of African descent. This day recognizes the rich heritage and achievements of people of African descent and celebrates their remarkable resilience in the face of ongoing challenges and discrimination. The day seeks to promote equality, justice, and sustainable development for people of African descent by fostering awareness and understanding. Academically, people of African descent are defined as individuals whose ancestry can be traced back to the African continent, including those living in Africa and the African diaspora, which encompasses populations dispersed across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and other regions as a result of historical events such as the transatlantic slave trade and subsequent migrations. CHALLENGES FACED BY PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT Socioeconomic Disparities People of African descent often face significant socioeconomic challenges, including higher rates of poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to quality education and healthcare. These disparities are frequently rooted in systemic racism and historical injustices. Discrimination and Racism Racial discrimination remains a pervasive issue for people of African descent. They are often subjected to prejudice, bias, and unequal treatment in various aspects of life, including employment, housing, and law enforcement. This systemic discrimination contributes to social and economic inequalities. Cultural and Identity Issues Preserving cultural identity and heritage is a significant challenge for many in the African diaspora. The legacy of colonization, slavery, and forced migration has disrupted cultural continuity and identity for many communities. In December 2020, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed August 31 as the International Day for People of African Descent through Resolution 75/170. This initiative followed the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024), which focused on recognition, justice, and development. HOW TO PARTICIPATE The establishment of this day underscores the unwavering global commitment to eradicating racism and promoting the rights and dignity of people of African descent. Here are some ways to participate in this united effort. Awareness Campaigns On the International Day for People of African Descent, various organizations and advocacy groups launch awareness campaigns to highlight the achievements and contributions of African descent. These campaigns often include educational materials, social media posts, and public service announcements to promote understanding and solidarity. Cultural Celebrations Communities worldwide celebrate with cultural events showcasing African music, dance, art, and literature and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of people of African descent. These events provide an opportunity to foster a deep sense of pride and identity. Educational Programs Schools, universities, and cultural institutions organize lectures, workshops, and panel discussions to educate the public about the history, challenges, and contributions of people of African descent. These programs aim to promote a deeper understanding of the systemic issues and to inspire action towards equality and justice. Advocacy and Policy Dialogues Advocacy groups and human rights organizations engage in dialogues and discussions with policymakers to address issues affecting people of African descent. These activities focus on promoting policies that combat racism, improve socioeconomic conditions, and protect the rights of people of African descent. Community Engagement Local community organizations host events such as storytelling sessions, film screenings, and exhibitions highlighting the experiences and achievements of people of African descent. These activities foster community engagement and solidarity. The International Day for People of African Descent serves as a vital platform for recognizing the contributions and addressing the challenges faced by people of African descent. By promoting awareness, cultural appreciation, and policy advocacy, the day contributes to the global fight against racism and discrimination.

Afternoon Tea Week (UK): August 10-16 (est)

06:20 AM | -
AFTERNOON TEA—A BRITISH TRADITION The afternoon tea ritual holds a cherished place in British culture. This time-honored custom, often enjoyed between 3:30 and 5 PM, is more than just a meal; it reflects the nation's affinity for elegance and refinement. TEA TIDBITS Afternoon tea typically consists of a delightful assortment of sandwiches, scones, cakes, and pastries. Finger sandwiches cut in small squares or rectangles filled with cucumber smoked salmon, egg and watercress, or ham and mustard provide a savory start. Part two includes scones. Scones are broken in half and never cut. Next, dab a dollop of clotted cream and jam on the plate, never directly on the scone when serving. The final tier of tea presents an array of cakes and pastries, featuring everything from Victoria Sponge and Battenberg cake to delicate éclairs and macaroons. PREPARING THE PERFECT CUP OF ENGLISH TEA Properly preparing a cup of tea is an art form in England. The process begins with fresh, cold water brought to a rolling boil. Loose-leaf tea (2 grams per cup) is placed in a teapot and warmed with hot water before brewing. Boiling water is added to the damp tea leaves and set aside to steep for three to five minutes, depending on the desired strength. Next, milk and sugar (or lemon for some) are added to the cup if desired. This prevents the milk from scalding. Once added, situate a strainer over the teacup and pour the steeped tea into the stainer. The stainer will catch the loose tea leaves. After pouring the tea, stir it in a lateral motion from six to twelve back and forth with the concaved spoon facing you—not round and round, an action that splashes and fails to dissolve the sugar well. A HISTORICAL NECESSITY TURNED CULTURAL ICON Tea became the official court beverage in England around 1662 when the dowry of a Portuguese princess, Catherine of Braganza, included it upon her marriage to Charles II. The idea of afternoon tea originated with Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, around 1840. The time between lunch and dinner (Noon and 8 PM) seemed forever, and afternoon tea provided the opportunity for a light snack and socializing. The Duchess found herself experiencing a "sinking feeling" in the late afternoon. She began inviting friends to join her for an additional meal of tea and light refreshments. The practice quickly gained popularity, evolving from a private social event into a widespread societal custom. Today, afternoon tea is celebrated both in homes and in upscale hotels, where it serves as a symbol of British hospitality and genteel leisure. Whether enjoyed in the lush settings of a country garden or the refined ambiance of a London tea room, afternoon tea remains a quintessentially British experience, embodying the nation's love for tradition and friendliness. This event first occurred in 2010 and was created by Keith Newton.

Airborne Day, Ntl. (1940): August 16

06:20 AM | -
International Airborne Day honors the bravery and commitment of Armed Services Airborne divisions, combat troops who land by parachute. Created by President George W Bush in 2001 with Senate Resolution 235, the chosen date is the anniversary of the first US parachute jump on August 16, 1940. While the main celebration occurs at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the headquarters of the 82nd Airborne Division, there are minor celebrations across the country. Brigadier General William Mitchell created the airborne division; he thought of putting troops in parachutes during combat. Later, Major William Lee tried and tested the methods for parachuting at Fort Benning, Georgia. By 1942, the US military had its first combat jump using a C-47 plane in North Africa.
