These competitions also often serve as qualifiers for global events such as the IAAF World Championships and the Olympic Games. As with the European Athletics Indoor Championships, the host city and venue for the European Athletics Championships change with each edition, allowing different countries the opportunity to showcase their facilities and hospitality.

Exercise with Your Children Week: August 2-8

Let's Move! This day aims to increase opportunities for kids to be physically active, both in and out of school, and to create new opportunities for families to move together. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where almost 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one-third of all children born in 2000 or later will have diabetes, and many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. Active Families: Engage in daily physical activity: 60 minutes for children and 30 minutes for adults. Active Schools: A variety of opportunities are available for schools to add more physical activity into the school day, including additional physical education classes, before–and after-school programs, recess, and the opening of school facilities for student and family recreation in the late afternoon and evening. Active Communities: Mayors and community leaders can promote physical fitness by increasing safe routes for kids to walk and ride to school, revitalizing parks, playgrounds, and community centers, and providing fun and affordable sports and fitness programs. The US Government previously supported the week-long event, which continues under the stewardship of US Registry of Exercise Professionals.

Failures Day, Ntl.: August 15*

National Failures Day instills the importance of failure in the pursuit of success. The Case Foundation sponsors this event each year and asks parents to speak with their children about the essential role of failure in achieving success. Often, it can be the catalyst of greatness. If it weren't for failures, we wouldn't have penicillin, stainless steel, or Post-it notes! Steve Jobs, the founder and former CEO of Apple Computers, experienced success and failure as he built Apple Computer. Not everything he tried worked. Not everything that he thought was a good idea was. But, when he finally did land on an idea with potential, he changed the world. Participants are also encouraged to tweet about their failures using the hashtag #dayforfailure and celebrate the successes failure nurtured. As US President John F. Kennedy said, "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."

Fajita Day, Ntl.: August 18

Fajitas are a favorite with people who love Tex-Mex cuisine. The barbequed meat and vegetable dish was invented in the 1930s by Mexican ranch workers in West Texas. It is the epitome of Tex-Mex, food that mixes Mexican and American culture/flavors. Chain restaurant On the Border created National Fajita Day to celebrate this Hispanic and American favorite. Look for deals throughout the country at your favorite Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Hispanic restaurants.

This day is a celebration of the uniqueness of American families, from the bold pioneer spirit of the first immigrants to the communal culture of Native Americans and everyone in-between. Families built the United States, and today is a day to celebrate what makes our nation and its families great.

Farmers' Market Week, Ntl.: August 2-8

National Farmers Market Week supports farmer's markets throughout the US and always occurs the first full week of August. Farmer's markets preserve America's rural livelihoods and farmland by providing economical distribution options for smaller farmers and those wishing to test new markets. Furthermore, they stimulate local economies. Growers selling locally create 13 full-time farm operator jobs per $1 million in revenue earned, and farmers that do not sell locally create three jobs per $1 million. Farmer's markets increase access to nutritious food, particularly in cities where access to fresh food is often limited to wealthy neighborhoods. On top of that, farmer's markets are cost-effective. The middle man is eliminated, and the farmer sells directly to the consumer. Farmer's markets are increasingly popular with SNAP families (welfare). Fifty-two percent of SNAP households shop at farmer's markets and direct from farmers today than did in 2011. Perhaps, most importantly, farmer's markets bring the country to their customers. Farmers help educate people about where food comes from and often provide cooking ideas and homemade jams, canned food, and juices. This week is about getting out and getting to know your local farmer's market and benefiting from fresh food at its peak.

THE OLD FIDDLERS' CONVENTION APPALACHIAN MUSIC AT ITS BEST The Old Fiddlers' Convention is the world's oldest and largest gathering of traditional and bluegrass musicians. First held in the spring of 1935 by members of Moose Lodge #733 to raise funds and promote their lodge, the convention's mission from the outset was "keeping alive the memories and sentiments of days gone by and make it possible for people of today to hear and enjoy the tunes of yesterday." Each year, the event draws more than 30,000 attendees—quadrupling the roughly 7,000 residents of Galax—as musicians and fans converge for concerts, contests, and camaraderie. Contestants—ranging from solo fiddlers and banjo players to full old-time and bluegrass bands—must register fee-free in advance. Competition categories include both individual and group performances, with cash prizes totaling thousands of dollars. Camping onsite is another popular draw for attendees. The convention distinguishes itself by its organic atmosphere featuring staged performances and late-night jam sessions around campsites, where musicians, dancers, and listeners intermingle freely. This informal vibe forms a potent part of its cultural significance. Its importance lies in preserving and fostering the intergenerational transmission of traditional Appalachian music. With the addition of youth divisions in 2000, children and teens now perform alongside seasoned players, reaffirming the event's role in cultural continuity. Coverage by NBC in 1967, presidential recognition, and acclaim as one of the Southeast's top events further underscore its cultural weight. Though rooted in Virginia, the convention attracts participants from across the U.S. and abroad—from Norway to Australia—reinforcing its international influence. The Old Fiddlers' Convention remains a living testament to the enduring power of traditional mountain music—one tune at a time.
