Sleepyhead Day (FI): July 27

Sleepyhead Day might be called the revenge of the early risers, especially if you are not a morning person. It is celebrated in Finland yearly and pranks the family snoozer, the last person to get up. This person is doused with water or thrown into a lake or sea. Another Finnish strategy is to shave the left side of the sleepyhead's chest, but only if the family snoozer is a man. In the towns of Naantali and Hanko, it's a public event. A prominent member of each is thrown into the sea at precisely 7 A.M. The person's name is kept secret until the last minute. Approaching dunking hour, selected townspeople whisk him or her out of bed and into the drink. Splash! Good morning! The Sleepyhead Day tradition is rooted in the story of the Saints of Ephesus (the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus). Custom says that around 250 AD, the seven men fled to a cave fearing persecution of their Christian beliefs. Fervently praying for God's help, they fell asleep and woke up two centuries later.

World Snake Day aims to change perceptions of snakes. Sponsored by Advocate for Snake Preservation (ASP), its mission focuses on science, education, and advocacy to promote compassionate conservation and coexistence with snakes. From the promoters: "Each year, tens of thousands of rattlesnakes are taken from the wild to be displayed and slaughtered for entertainment and profit at rattlesnake roundups, which occur throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama. Promoted as folksy, family-friendly fun, these events foster disrespect for native wildlife and the natural world. They are a gross example of wildlife management based on fear rather than science. Professional hunters, not bound by 'bag' or 'take' limits, remove snakes from their native habitats and are awarded cash prizes for bringing in the most and biggest snakes. Most snakes are caught by pouring gasoline into their winter dens, polluting surrounding land and water, and may impact up to 350 other wildlife species. Rattlesnake roundups depend on the public's misconception of snakes as dangerous pests that we cannot safely tolerate near our homes. No aspect of these events is sustainable, educational, or necessary." World Snake Day is one of two days highlighting snakes, and the other is Serpents Day.

Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament (US-CA): July 17-26

Each summer, Snoopy's home ice rink in Santa Rosa, California, welcomes senior hockey players from across the globe to the Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament. Initially organized in 1975 by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, the creator of "Peanuts," this tournament is an annual tradition. The ice hockey competition attracts former professional and amateur enthusiasts aged 40 and above, offering them a chance to compete in a unique international tournament. Divisions are categorized by age, with the oldest division being 75 and older. The week-long event attracts global teams, including those from Canada, Finland, and Japan, to join US teams to compete in a series of matches. The tournament ends with a championship match, followed by an awards ceremony. Schulz's love for hockey was well-known and evident in his comic strip. The Snoopy Tournament, as it is affectionately called, not only serves as a testament to his love for the sport but also brings together the senior hockey community to celebrate the game and relish in the camaraderie and competition that the Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament offers. Today is the anniversary of the final flight of the Space Shuttle. It was at 5:57 AM on July 8, 2011, that the Atlantis shuttle returned to Cape Canaveral, Florida, after 30 years of service. It all began on April 12, 1981, during the launch of the Columbia space shuttle. The final flight was memorable because this was also the 50th anniversary of the second American human spaceflight, Gus Grissom, on board Liberty Bell 7. One of the distinctive legacies of the shuttle is the construction of the International Space Station, the largest laboratory in Earth orbit. The shuttle was the primary carrier of the heavy payloads that made the International Space Station what it is today.

Srebrenica Genocide, International Day of Reflection for (1995): July 11

UN General Assembly Declares July 11 as International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of Srebrenica Genocide On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the UN General Assembly designated July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of Genocide Jully 11-19, 1995, in Srebrenica, Yugoslavia (Bosnia). At least 8,372 people were killed, thousands displaced, and entire communities destroyed. The resolution, adopted with the same title, also requested the Secretary-General to establish an outreach program on the Srebrenica genocide in preparation for the 30th anniversary next year. In addition, the Assembly condemned any denial of the Srebrenica genocide and called on Member States to preserve the facts through educational systems, aiming to prevent denial, distortion, and future occurrences of genocide. The resolution, sponsored by Germany and Rwanda, was adopted by a recorded vote of 84 nations in favor, 19 against, and 68 abstentions. THE SREBRENICA GENOCIDE The Srebrenica genocide represents one of the darkest chapters of the war that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. In July 1995, the Bosnian Serb army overran Srebrenica, a town declared a safe area by the Security Council and brutally murdered thousands of men and teenagers. The Bosnian Serb forces also expelled 20,000 people from the city. A small and lightly armed unit of Dutch peacekeepers under the UN flag was unable to resist the Bosnian Serb forces. The brutal killings of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica by the army of Republika Srpska have been recognized as genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). GLOBAL REACTION TO THE NEW DAY Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, welcomed the resolution as "further recognition" of the victims and survivors and their pursuit of justice, truth, and guarantees of non-recurrence. "The resolution is all the more important given the persistent revisionism, denial of the Srebrenica genocide, and hate speech by high-level political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in neighboring countries," Türk stated. GERMANY: Antje Leendertse, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN, stated that the initiative was about honoring the victims and supporting survivors "who continue to live with scars of that fateful time." Leendertse clarified that the resolution "is not directed against anybody" but is aimed at the perpetrators of the genocide. SERBIA: President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia criticized the resolution as "highly politicized," claiming it would "open a Pandora's box." "This is not about reconciliation, not about memories; this is something that will just open an old wound and create complete political havoc. Not only in our region but even here, in this hall," he argued. The commemoration of the day and remembrance of the event was established during the week leaders in Israel and Palestine's Gaza Strip were issued memorandum of intent to secure arrest warrants by the ICC for the unfolding genocide in Gaza, which has displaced 2.3 million people, killed over 35,000 and destroyed 80% of all housing, infrastructure and culture in a besieged area the size of the island of Manhattan in New York City. Like Serbia, those accused deny they're guilty of anything.
