Teddy Bear Picnic Day: July 10

Teddy Bear Picnic Day plays on a theme in a song by John Walter Bratton, "The Teddy Bear's Picnic," an instrumental. Due to its popularity, in 1932, James Kennedy added lyrics, making it a children's classic. The late US President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt also contributed to the popularity of the teddy bear itself. Hunting in Mississippi in 1902, Roosevelt caught a small bear but refused to shoot it. The Washington Post knew of the story and created an editorial cartoon. Toy store owner Morris Michtom and his wife made a stuffed bear like the cub saved in the comic. Michtom contacted the President to enquire if they could call their stuffed toy bear by his nickname, "Teddy." The rest is history.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards generate awareness of and appreciation for comics, graphic novels, and related popular art forms, including participation in and support of public presentations, conventions, exhibits, museums, and other public outreach activities celebrating the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. Named for acclaimed comics creator Will Eisner (March 16, 1917 - January 3, 2005), the awards were created in 1988 and highlight the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels. WHO WAS WILL EISNER? Will Eisner (1917-2005) was an American cartoonist and writer and is considered one of the most influential figures in the world of comics. He is best known for creating the following works: "The Spirit" (1940-1952)—published as a weekly newspaper comic book insert. "A Contract with God" (1978)—a semi-autobiographical graphic novel set in a Bronx tenement during the 1930s. The textbook series "Will Eisner's Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative" (1985-2007). Additional works include "The Dreamer" (1986), "To the Heart of the Storm" (1991), "The Name of the Game" (2001), and "The Plot: The Secret Story of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" (2005). National Thermal Engineer Day celebrates the science and its pioneer, Frenchman Nicolas Leonard Sadi Carnot (June 1, 1796 - Aug. 24, 1832). Considered the Father of Thermodynamics, Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot lived for just 36 years between 1796 and 1832. His theories, today referred to as the Carnot Cycle and first published in his 1824 book "Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire," focused upon the idea of a heat-driven engine. With such an engine, the gas expands and creates energy through piston movement. His work impacted the Industrial Revolution, contributing to the creation of the diesel engine, and later supplied the foundation for the discovery of the second law of Thermodynamics: total entropy (disorder) of a system never decreases through time.

Three Weeks (J): July 2-23

Three Weeks, or Bein ha-Metzarim, is an observance in the Jewish faith mourning the destruction of the first (586 BC) and second Temples (70 AD). Observed beginning in the Hebrew month of Tammuz, on its seventeenth day, and ending on the ninth day of Av, each aspect of Three Weeks has different traditions. There are four levels of mourning, and each level intensifies as it moves toward the end of the observance. Throughout Three Weeks, the faithful are not allowed to cut or shave hair, conduct marriages, or other significant celebrations, as Three Weeks is reserved for mourning. Fasting from meat and reciting the Haftarots on Saturday are common activities. During the final nine days, mourning intensifies with abstinence from poultry, meat, wine, and the taking of hot baths.

Tish'a B'Av (J): July 22/23

Tish'a B'Av is a fast observed annually by the Jewish faith to commemorate the destruction of Jerusalem's first and second Hebrew temples. The temple was the center of the Hebrew faith, with the Holy of Holies, the room in which God lived at its center. Its destruction in 70 AD nearly destroyed the religion and forced the Sanhedrin and other religious leaders into hiding. Over the next 125 - 250 years, the priests wrote down the oral traditions of the faith and created the Talmud. The Talmud began in two versions, Jerusalem and the Babylonian. Encyclopedic in a multi-volume collection, the Talmud records the laws and traditions in two parts, the Mishnah and Gemara, and is central to the modern faith. The Talmud's creation formed the third iteration of the religion, based upon rabbinic leadership and philosophy. It is this version we call Judaism today. Tish'a B'Av is considered the saddest day in the Jewish calendar; people fast for 25 hours and read from The Book of Lamentations, which depicts how Jerusalem was destroyed. Four other prohibitions observed during the fasting: No bathing or washing No applying of cream or oils No wearing of shoes No marital relations Tisha'a B'Av is rooted in the story of the Sin of the Spies (Numbers 13:1-15:41). The destruction of the first and second temples occurred on the Av 9 of the Hebrew calendar in the Gregorian years of 586 BC and 70 AD. Tour de France (ES/FR): July 4 - July 26

The Tour de France is an annual cycling event done in stages held in France. Tour de France is the oldest of the three most prestigious global cycling events. Although the routes may vary, the format remains the same. Cyclists pass through the Pyrenees and the Alps, finishing on the Champs-Elysees. The race lasts for 21 days and covers 3,500 kilometers. Organized in 1903 as a promotion for L'Auto, a magazine, the Amaury Sport Organization currently champions the event. There are only two times when the race was not held, during the two World Wars. Winners are determined through the compounded times of their teams (nine riders). The winner is the person with the lowest aggregate time, and that rider gets to wear the yellow jersey. Considered a UCI (Union Cycliste International) World Tour event, participants are members of the UCI World Teams unless invited by a sponsor.

Town Criers Day, Intl.: July 13

International Town Criers Day falls on the second Monday of July and is devoted to remembering the importance of the town crier before print media. Town criers were the source of the latest news and events for much of modern history. Originating in England, town criers were primarily employed to disseminate information about the royal family and aristocracy. This event was created in 1996 by the Waterloo Town Crier Scott Fraser.
