Do Something Nice Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor. Its purpose is to encourage us to try and be better people by taking care of someone's needs or problems. Over the years, via misinformation, it is possible that this day originated with Sweetest Day, the third Saturday in October. It is unusual to find two days with the same objective so close to each other on the calendar. Sweetest Day is an official day to "do something nice" for others. A candy company founded that day in 1922.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month: October

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, per presidential decree. Over the past few decades, significant achievements have been made in reducing domestic violence in America. Yet, despite tremendous progress, an average of three women in America die due to domestic violence each day. One in four women and one in thirteen men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. These statistics are even more sobering when we consider that domestic violence often goes unreported. The ramifications of domestic violence are staggering. Young women are among the most vulnerable, suffering the highest rates of intimate partner violence. Exposure to domestic violence puts our young men and women in danger of long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Children who experience domestic violence are at a higher risk for failure in school, emotional disorders, and substance abuse. They are more likely to perpetuate the cycle of violence themselves later in life.

The ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the Chinese calendar is the Double Ninth Festival, Chung Yeung Festival in Hong Kong, the Chōyō or Chrysanthemum Festival in Japanese, and the Trùng Cửu in Vietnamese. Double nine is considered a dangerous date in Asian culture. Casually, the day is referred to as the Double Yang Festival; two nines are believed to be overabundant in "yang." It is customary to climb a high mountain to protect from danger, drink chrysanthemum liquor, and wear the zhu yu plant. This holiday seems to have originated between 25 BC and 25 AD.

Double Ten Day in Taiwan (and secretly celebrated in China by many) commemorates October 10, 1911, Wuchang Uprising, leading to the end of the Qing Dynasty and which helped to create the Republic of China. These events are portrayed in the Academy Award-winning film, "The Last Emperor." Double Ten Day is enthusiastically celebrated in Taiwan and by its diaspora. The island nation would eventually split off from China. Today, China claims Taiwan as its territory, and the Taiwanese claim independence and sovereignty from China.
