The United Nations General Assembly designated today as the International Day of the Elderly. Ageism is a widely prevalent and prejudicial attitude that stems from the assumption that age discrimination and sometimes neglect and abuse of older persons is currently a social norm. It is, therefore, acceptable. In reality, it stigmatizes people simply because they have advanced in age. Ageism occurs in every culture, faith, socio-economic class, and society. It finds expression in individuals’ attitudes, institutional and policy practices, and media representations devaluing and excluding older persons. Today is about appreciating the individual, abolishing discrimination based on how many wrinkles or gray hairs a person might have, and focusing on the potential and value of a human being at each stage of life.

Emergency Nurses Day: October 9

Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association has recognized the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day, a day honoring emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care. In 2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses because one day is not enough to recognize all contributions made by emergency nurses. During a year when the Zika virus, opioids and heroin, and the mental health crisis made national headlines, emergency nurses compassionately connected with and cared for their community of patients and coworkers. This week is about honoring these frontline workers in the healthcare field.

They always know the right thing to say or do when it affects others. These are the people with a very high emotional IQ, emotional intelligence. What is emotional intelligence? According to the Emotional Intelligence Institute: "Emotional intelligence (EI) is defined as the ability to monitor one's own emotions, as well as those of other people, to discriminate between different emotions, and to label them appropriately." This month is about learning how to improve your emotional intelligence. Improve your life and those around you.

More than half of Americans, an estimated 56%, do not have an estate plan, making estate planning a critically overlooked component of financial health. National Estate Planning Awareness Week (H. Res. 1499) was adopted on September 27, 2008, to help consumers understand estate planning and its needs and how best to create a qualified team of professionals to assist in the planning process. Estate planning encompasses the growth, conservation, and transfer of an individual’s wealth through creating and maintaining an “estate plan.” The purpose of estate planning is to develop a strategy that will maintain the financial security of individuals through their lifetime and ensure the intended transfer of their property and assets at death while considering the family's unique circumstances and the potential costs of different methods. A properly-created team of professionals may include but is not limited to, the attorney, accountant, trust officer, and credentialed insurance financial planners, all working together to benefit their client.

The day honors the first official etiquette maven's birth, Emily Post, on October 27, 1872. Etiquette has become somewhat of a lost art in the US. Often considered a set of rules, etiquette is about the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have done to you." It is about treating people with respect, observing boundaries, and having a set of protocols to use in unfamiliar situations. Failure Day, Ntl. (FI): October 13*

Finns are known for their dislike and aversion to failure. Still, with the Great Recession heavily impacting the Scandinavian country, many of its people found themselves in an unfavorable state: dependent upon a social welfare system and unable to find a job. For this reason, the first Failure Day occurred in Finland in 2010. Its purpose is to encourage young entrepreneurs to take risks and not be afraid to fail. National Failure Day is an initiative of the Aalto Entrepreneurship Society, a non-profit targeting young businessmen, and Boardman Tulenkantajat, an organization of entrepreneurs. It quickly gained the support of the Finnish government, media, and celebrities, including the creator of Angry Birds and the Chairmen of Nokia and Shell. The movement spread across the country, celebrated on the streets, cafes, and university campuses. Each year events expand throughout the nation, often featuring speeches by prominent entrepreneurs who share their failure stories that formed the stepping stones of their success.
