Fat Bear Week: October 2-8 (est)

As Autumn progresses, the bears of the world prepare to hibernate through the winter. They spend their summer fattening up and eating to store the food they'll need for the long winter's nap. And boy, do they get fat! So fat that Katmai Conservancy in Alaska hosts an online contest where you can vote for your favorite supersized bear each year. On the Conservancy's website, you'll see each bear's progress ranging from early summer slim to September sumptuous. Typically, about a dozen bears compete yearly, and you pick your favorite. Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (C): October 4

Saint Francis was an Italian priest who lived in the 12th and 13th centuries. Zealous, he spent his life working on missions supported by the Holy Roman Church. St. Francis is best known for his love for animals and nature. He is often described as spending much of his time outdoors, listening to birds and talking with animals. That is why he is usually portrayed with a bird in his hand today. Many people take their pets to a church on St. Francis Day to receive a blessing. The Church often holds up St. Francis to urge people to take better care of the environment and follow his example.

Felabration is an annual music and arts festival held in Lagos, Nigeria, created in memory of Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician and human rights activist who was a significant figure in African music and the creator of Afrobeat. Fela Kuti (October 15, 1938 - August 2, 1997) was a successful musician and a political activist, famously outspoken against the Nigerian government and other political authorities. Fela's music was a powerful voice for social justice, and his Afrobeat sound, which fused traditional Yoruba music with jazz, highlife, and funk, has significantly influenced global music. After Kuti's death, his eldest child Yeni Kuti came up with the idea to celebrate his life and his contributions to Nigerian and African society with a music festival. Felabration was born and held annually (except in 2020-2022 due to COVID-19) at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, a venue built to replace the original Shrine nightclub that was a hub for Fela's performances. Felabration occurs annually during the week of Fela Kuti's birthday in mid-October. It attracts visitors from all over the world who come to celebrate Fela's legacy. The festival includes performances by top Nigerian artists and international musicians. The performances are mostly Afrobeat, in homage to Fela, but you'll also hear other genres like hip-hop, R&B, and reggae. But Felabration is more than just a music festival. It also includes street parades, symposia on social and cultural issues, debates, and art exhibitions promoting Fela's cultural, political, and musical ideals centered around African unity and government accountability. Over the years, Felabration has grown in size and importance and now includes a Felabration Afrobics Dance Competition and a secondary school debate that stimulates intellectual discourse amongst the youth. Senate Resolution 287 passed on October 5, 2011, and created National Filipino American History Month. This month promotes understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation, and enrichment through the identification, gathering, preservation, and dissemination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States. There are currently more than 30 Filipino American chapters nationwide and several conferences focusing on this unique culture. October marks the anniversary of the arrival of the first Filipino in America, October 18, 1587.

The Great Chicago Fire of October 8-10, 1871, killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres. October 9 represents the deadliest of the three days. The most devastating fire in American history remains Wisconsin's Peshtigo Fire, October 8, 1871. The fire only burned for one day but killed 1,200 - 2,400 people and charred over 1.2 million acres. Rain, after months of drought, put it out. The largest fire in the world included forests in two countries, Russia and China. The 1987 Black Dragon Fire scorched 2.5 million acres and is the deadliest forest fire in the People's Republic of China's history. One hundred ninety-one died by fire, 250 were injured, and 33,000 Chinese became homeless. For context, the second largest fire to date in the US, the 2021 Dixie Fire in California, burned 463,000 acres and killed one; the largest, Alaska's 2004 Taylor Complex Fire, killed 15 and burned 1.3 million acres. HISTORY OF THE EVENT In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day Proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week is observed on Sunday through Saturday, including October 8. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the record's longest-running public health and safety observance. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925.

Fire Pup Day, Ntl.: October 1

Dalmatians have long been associated with fire fighting, though shepherds, Labradors, and pit bulls/terriers are more likely to be found with fire search and rescue. Before internal combustion engines, dogs were used to keep the horses running toward a fire (rather than away) beginning during the 18th century. Today dogs help first responders find injured people, pinpoint accelerants and explosives, and get into places too dangerous or small for people. These four-legged firefighters deserve appreciation, and most are happy to take payment in biscuits!
