On October 6, 1683, thirteen families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in Philadelphia and created Germantown, Pennsylvania. It was the first settlement of Germans in what would become the United States. Today marks the anniversary of that community's establishment and German Americans' contribution to the history of America. German-American Day was first declared as German American Heritage Day in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. Today, nearly a quarter of American citizens trace their ancestry to Germany. Many modern American traditions also have their roots in Germany, Christmas included, and this day celebrates that and strengthens the friendship between the two nations.

German-American Heritage Month is celebrated annually and coincides with German-American day, as proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 and President Barack Obama in 2010. German-American Heritage Month celebrates the German immigrants who came from Europe and lived on American soil in the first days of colonization and their immense contribution to the American culture. With that resolution, the UN invited the member states and other significant organizations to honor the International Day of the Girl and raise awareness of the importance of girls worldwide. International Day of the Girl Child is a different event from National Girls Day, which the Confidence Coalition sponsors.

But there are still a lot of cats outside, by choice or not. Global Cat Day provides non-lethal solutions to controlling the feral cat populations worldwide. These solutions include Trap-Neuter-Return programs, foster and adoption services, and kitten nurseries. Global Cat Day is about raising awareness about the situations of feral cats the world over and coming up with solutions that care rather than kill.

Golden Week is the first seven days of October in China, a national holiday. October 1 celebrates the founding of the People's Republic of China. The rest of the week is festive with people traveling the country on vacation or visiting relatives. What's also interesting is that October 1 is not the day the People's Republic of China was founded, which occurred on September 1, 1949. However, on October 1, 1949, the Central People's Government was founded, and the next day, the government passed the "Resolution on the National Day of the People's Republic of China." At that time, October 1 was declared National Day, and October 1-7 as Golden Week.

Good Samaritan Day (2011): October 13*

Today is one of two Good Samaritan Days each year. Good Samaritan Day is named after the Parable of the Good Samaritan from the New Testament of the Bible, Luke 10:25-37. The first God Samaritan Day was declared in 1964 in New York City after Catherine "Kitty" Genovese was viciously stabbed and murdered. Why does a murder of a single woman deserve a day of remembrance? Nearly 40 people witnessed it and allegedly stood and watched as Catherine was screaming for help and dying. They saw yet did nothing. The day reminds us of the importance of being a good and selfless person and the terror of what happens when we are not. People forgot about the New York murder of Catherine Genovese. Decades later, the same thing happened on Foshan Market Street in Guangdong, China. A young girl named Wang Yue was run over by two vehicles as people stood and watched on October 13, 2011. So many watched, yet none did anything until an older woman named Chen Xianmei came to her aid. This Good Samaritan Day was created by Richard Lutz, appalled by the indifference of the onlookers, as a tribute to Yue's life. It falls on the anniversary of her deadly attack.
