Dive Bar Day, Ntl.: July 7

06:20 AM | -
Dive Bars are little bars and pubs the locals usually know. They are a part of American culture, like apple pie and baseball. Like many small businesses, dive bars are disappearing in the gig economy. National Dive Bar Day raises awareness and encourages people to visit their local pub and toast to their success. Dog Days of Summer: July 3-August 11

06:20 AM | -
The Dog Days of Summer are the hottest weeks in the Northern Hemisphere. They received their name in antiquity based upon the movements of the star Sirius, the "dog star." Pagan societies sacrificed a brown dog to the god represented by Sirius in an attempt to mitigate extreme heat over the coming weeks.

Doghouse Day, Get Out of the, Ntl.: July 20

06:20 AM | -
The third Monday of July is a true man's day, "National Get Out of the Doghouse Day." Its purpose is to encourage men to get their act together and do the right thing to put them back into their wives' good graces. Being in the "doghouse" is an American colloquialism men often use to describe a situation where they know they've done something they shouldn't have. Their partner, usually a wife or girlfriend, has banished the offending male from the house as punishment, leaving him just the doghouse for sleep. Banishment typically includes not speaking to the offending male, passive-aggressive behavior, withholding affection, angry outbursts, and generally uncomfortable home life for anywhere from an hour to weeks. This event first ran in 1999. It was created by Social Media marketing expert Heidi Richards Mooney.

Doghouse Repairs Month, Ntl.: July

06:20 AM | -
July is a month for men to mind their Ps & Qs and avoid getting in trouble with the women in their lives by making an effort to show how much they care. "National Doghouse Repairs Month" was created by Heidi Richards Mooney. Being in the "dog house" is an American colloquialism men often use to describe a situation where they know they've done something they shouldn't have. Their partner, usually a wife or girlfriend, has banished the offending male from the house as punishment, leaving just the doghouse for sleep. Banishment typically includes not speaking to the offending male, passive-aggressive behavior, withholding affection, angry outbursts, and an uncomfortable home life for anywhere from an hour to weeks. National Doghouse Repairs Month is the month to avoid all that with a pre-emptive strike of kindness.

Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Omelet Day, Ntl.: July 9

06:20 AM | -
National Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Omelet Day celebrates the omelet as a breakfast staple (which makes a darn good lunch or dinner too). Share an omelet with friends and family. Another version of this holiday plays on the adage, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." This sage advice, centuries-old, relates to keeping your options open and don't bet all you have on one specific outcome, revenue stream, friend or? You get the idea!

Don't Step on a Bee Day: July 10

06:20 AM | -
Please Don’t Step on a Bee Day seeks to raise awareness of the importance of bees in our environment. Created by the Wellcat.com duo Thomas and Ruth Roy, Don’t Step on a Bee Day aims to inform children not to step on bees when they go barefoot during the summer. Today, people plant herbs and other flowering shrubs that bees prefer, build a bee hive, and avoid using pesticides. Bees are essential components of the environment. As chief pollinators, they directly affect the production of fruit for human consumption.

Drowning Prevention Day, World: July 25

06:20 AM | -
Drowning is a significant global public health issue, causing approximately 236,000 deaths annually. It is one of the primary causes of accidental death, particularly for individuals aged 1-24 years, and constitutes 7% of all injury-related deaths. Drowning affects all regions and economies, but over 90% of incidents occur in low and middle-income countries, with over half of global drownings happening in the WHO Western Pacific Region and WHO South-East Asia Region. In response to this issue, the General Assembly declared World Drowning Prevention Day, which takes place annually on July 25th. This day is meant to raise awareness about the devastating impact of drowning and promote proven preventative measures. Some of these measures include installing barriers to limit access to water, creating safe areas away from water, teaching water safety and swimming skills, training in safe rescue and resuscitation techniques, enforcing safe boating regulations, and improving flood risk management. The UN General Assembly invited the World Health Organization (WHO) to coordinate drowning prevention efforts within the UN system. As part of this role, WHO produces advocacy materials, organizes a global launch event, and supports national and local activities in countries worldwide.

Earth Enters Global Boiling Stage (2023): July 28

06:20 AM | -
In response to devastating wildfires and record-breaking temperatures, on July 28, 2023, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a dire warning about the impact of climate change. Describing the current era as "global boiling," he emphasized the urgency of international action on climate adaptation, emission reduction, and financial commitment towards climate goals. Guterres spoke of tragedies already unfolding due to climate change, including losing children to monsoon rains, families fleeing wildfires, and workers succumbing to extreme heat. Stressing the need for climate action now, Guterres called on leaders, particularly those from the G20 nations responsible for 80% of global emissions, to step up their efforts. He pointed to upcoming international events, including the UN Climate Ambition Summit and COP28, as opportunities for pivotal change. The Secretary-General urged for the adoption of new national emissions targets, advocating for net-zero emissions by mid-century, an equitable transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, cessation of oil and gas expansion, and the phasing out of coal by 2040. He further condemned greenwashing and deceptive practices obstructing climate action, demanding real commitment from companies, cities, regions, financial institutions, and fossil fuel companies. With extreme weather becoming the norm, Guterres appealed for an increase in adaptation investment, especially in developing countries. He called on developed nations to double adaptation finance by 2025 and to ensure protection through early warning systems by 2027.

Eastport Old Home Week (US-ME): July 1-4

06:20 AM | -
Embracing Canada Day (July 1) and the Fourth of July, Eastport, Maine, the easternmost city in the United States surrounded by the Canadian Islands of the Atlantic and Bay of Fundy, celebrates both national events with Eastport Old Home Week. This festival features entertainment, music, a craft fair, rides, foods from both nations, and fireworks. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Eat Your Beans Day, Ntl.: July 3

06:20 AM | -
There are few things better than an ice-cold three-bean salad on a hot summer day, and National Eat Your Beans Day is a great day to revisit this classic. Beans are pulses. Pulses are leguminous crops yielding between 1 and 12 grains or seeds of variable size, shape, and color within a pod. Examples of pulses include beans, peas, and lentils. Pulses are far cheaper and more sustainable than meat and animal products, especially in developing countries. Use this day to discover some new beans and add some variety to your diet.

Eat Your Jell-O Day, Ntl.: July 12

06:20 AM | -
Eat your Jell-o Day is simply a day to eat the gelatin dessert trademarked as Jell-o in 1899 by May David Wait. There is no trademark application, patent, or birthday/death day tied to this event; we can only assume that someone wanted an excuse to eat one of their favorite summer treats and thus created the day. After that, it became a traditional celebration that proliferated on the Internet.

Eggplant Month, Ntl.: July

06:20 AM | -
ABOUT NATIONAL EGGPLANT MONTH National Eggplant Month occurs in July and promotes eggplant's culinary versatility and nutritional benefits, encouraging people to incorporate it into their diets. It is an unofficial event with no sponsor. History of Eggplant Eggplant (Solanum melongena), or aubergine, is a species in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Its origins trace back to Asia, most likely India and China, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. The earliest written records of eggplant come from ancient Chinese texts dating back to the 5th century. From there, it spread to the Middle East, Africa, and eventually Europe, where the Arabs introduced it during the Middle Ages. In Europe, eggplant was initially met with suspicion due to its relation to other nightshade plants, some of which are toxic. However, Europeans widely embraced eggplant in the 18th century. Early European settlers brought it to the Americas, which has since become a staple in various regional cuisines. Popularity of Eggplant Eggplant is beloved for several reasons: Versatility: whether grilling, baking, frying, or stewing, the vegetable's spongy texture absorbs flavors well, making it a versatile ingredient in many dishes. Nutritional Value: Eggplant is low in calories and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It contains antioxidants, which benefit brain health. Culinary Tradition: Eggplant is a critical ingredient in many traditional dishes worldwide, such as Middle Eastern baba ghanoush, Italian eggplant Parmesan, and French ratatouille. Varieties of Eggplant There are many varieties of eggplant, differing in size, shape, color, and flavor. Some of the most common types include: Globe Eggplant: Also known as American eggplant, it is large, dark purple, and oval-shaped. Italian Eggplant: Similar to globe eggplant but smaller and more elongated. Japanese Eggplant: Long, slender, and usually dark purple. Chinese Eggplant: Similar to Japanese eggplant but lighter in color and often longer. Thai Eggplant: Small, round, and green, often used in Thai curries. Indian Eggplant: Small, round, and deep purple, also known as baby eggplant. White Eggplant: Egg-shaped and white, believed to be the origin of the name "eggplant."
