Though normally over Memorial Day, the 2026 Fleet Week takes place over July 4th in honor of the United State's 250th birthday in New York City. Thousands of sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen share their experiences and ships with the citizens of the tri-state area in the lead-up to Fourth of July and through it. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Flitch Day, Ntl. (UK): July 19

Folklife Festival, Smithsonian (US-DC): July 1-6 (est)

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, established in 1967, honors contemporary living and cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Festival has featured participants from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. The free festival occurs every summer on the National Mall, near the Fourth of July holiday. In 2019, it moved to the last weekend of June. It is an educational, research-based presentation that features master artisans and other tradition bearers. We invite visitors to sing and dance along, try craft and game workshops, learn traditional recipes, ask questions, and participate in this unique cultural exchange. ABOUT FRAGILE X AWARENESS MONTH Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disability, behavioral and learning challenges, and various physical characteristics. It is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism. Causes of Fragile X Syndrome Fragile X Syndrome begins with a mutation in the FMR1 gene located on the X chromosome. This gene produces a protein called FMRP, essential for normal neural development. In individuals with FXS, a section of the FMR1 gene called the CGG triplet repeat is expanded. Symptoms of Fragile X Syndrome The symptoms of Fragile X Syndrome can vary widely among individuals, but common signs include: Intellectual and Developmental Delays: Delayed speech and language development Learning disabilities and cognitive impairments Intellectual disability Behavioral and Emotional Symptoms: Hyperactivity and impulsivity Anxiety and mood swings Autism spectrum disorder features, such as social avoidance and repetitive behaviors Attention deficits and difficulties in focusing Physical Characteristics: Long face and large ears Flat feet Hyperextensible joints, especially fingers Macroorchidism (enlarged testicles) in males after puberty Sensory Sensitivities: Sensitivity to light, sounds, textures, and other sensory inputs Prevalence of Fragile X Syndrome Fragile X Syndrome affects both males and females, though males are typically more severely affected due to having only one X chromosome. In Males: Approximately 1 in 4,000 to 1 in 7,000. In Females: Approximately 1 in 8,000 to 1 in 11,000. The variability in these estimates is due to differences in study methodologies and population sampling. Summary Fragile X Syndrome is a significant genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the FMR1 gene. It leads to a range of cognitive, behavioral, and physical symptoms. Fried Clam Day, Ntl. (1916): July 3

National Fried Clam Day marks the anniversary of this bar appetizer arriving on the world culinary stage in 1916 via Lawrence Henry and Bessey Woodman's small store, Woodman's in Essex, Massachusetts. Like many familiar foods, fried clams were somewhat of an accident. Chatting with friends, Henry and Bessey Woodman were trying to figure out how to get more business into their store. A friend suggested they fry the clams they had yet to shuck. At first, it seemed silly. Clams have shells. But, once the shells were removed and the meat dipped in batter and fried, a new East Coast favorite was born. They tested out their fried clams the next day at a 4th of July celebration; the rest is history. Today, over 100 years later, you can still get the original fried clams at Woodman's. This event first appeared in 2015.

Friendship, Intl. Day of: July 30

International Day of Friendship promotes cultural peace and seeks to build connections between different communities and countries. Paraguay was the first country to observe World Friendship Day on July 30, 1958, as proposed by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho. It is said to have originated in the US in 1919. However, Joyce Hall, the Hallmark cards founder, actively promoted this event in 1930. In 1998, Winnie-the-Pooh was designated as the Ambassador of Friendship by Nane Annan, the wife of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in an event co-sponsored by the UN Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises and hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford. By July 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 30 as the International Day of Friendship. India and the United States observe this day on the first Sunday in August and refer to it as World Friendship Day. The rest of the world celebrates it on July 30 as International Friendship Day, and the United Nations created both events. Dates of observance can vary by nation.
