The goal of the World Heart Federation is to reduce premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases around the world by at least 25% by 2025.

International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste: September 29

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste calls for the prioritization of efforts by both public and private sectors to reduce food loss and waste. This goal aligns with the more efficient use of natural resources, climate change mitigation, and enhanced food security and nutrition. Approximately 14% of global food is lost after harvest but before retail, and about 17% is wasted at the retail and consumption levels. This waste contributes 8-10% of total global greenhouse gases, contributing to climate instability and extreme weather events which negatively affect crop yields, reduce nutritional quality, cause supply chain disruptions, and threaten food security and nutrition. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 12, target 12.3, calls for halving global food waste per capita at retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along production and supply chains. With an estimated 3.1 billion people without access to a healthy diet, and about 828 million people facing hunger, the need to reduce food loss and waste is urgent. As there are only eight years left to achieve the target, the necessity of scaling up action to reduce food loss and waste is paramount. Reducing food loss and waste not only offers immediate climate benefits, but it also enhances the overall sustainability of our food systems. This transformation is crucial for ensuring better planetary and nutritional outcomes for current and future generations.

Migrants and Refugees, World Day of: September 29

World Day of Migrants & Refugees first ran in 1914 and was initiated by Pope Pius X. In 2019, and the date moved from early January to the last Sunday of September. There are three general classifications of refugees and migrants: Asylum seekers, refugees, and economic migrants. The British Red Cross defines each as follows: ASYLUM SEEKERS An asylum seeker flees their home and arrives in another country, whichever way they can. Makes themselves known to the authorities Submits an asylum application Has a legal right to stay in the country while waiting for a decision. In 2018, the UK received applications for asylum for 37,453 people (including dependents), far less than Germany (162,000), France (110,000), Greece (65,000) and Italy (49,000). REFUGEES Refugees prove they’d be at risk if they returned to their home country. Has had their claim for asylum accepted by the government Can now stay here either long term or indefinitely. Refugees have a right under the UK and international law to bring their immediate family members to join them. ECONOMIC MIGRANTS An economic migrant has moved to another country to work. They could be living there legally or illegally depending on how they entered the country; May or may not have a legal work permit.

Poisoned Blackberries Day (Michaelmas)(C): September 29

Poisoned Blackberries Day is an anniversary marking the conquest of good over evil. According to medieval lore, blackberries symbolize lawyers and justice. But why poisoned, and does it have anything to do with lawyers? September 29 in the Gregorian Calendar is Michaelmas. During the Middle Ages, Christians celebrated with a feast with roast goose to commemorate the victory of archangel Michael over Lucifer. In the Bible, the archangel Michael battled against the devil in heaven and won. Poisoned Blackberry day marks the anniversary of the day God threw Satan out of heaven, and he landed on a thorny blackberry bush. Furious, Satan spits on the blackberries, poisoning the entire crop for a day. Spoiling the fruit was a bit of a problem. Michaelmas was the "due date" for the completion of the harvest and marked the end of the third quarter in the Christian calendar. Additional quarter-end dates include Lady Day (March 25), Midsummer (June 24), and Christmas (December 25). Michael, representing God's good, battled the devil and won, delivering justice over his evil deeds. Civically, there is an additional tie to the legal profession. Michaelmas marks the commencement of legal and university terms, and it signaled the election of public servants to the office and a time for hiring.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Day (1899): September 29

On September 29, 1899, veterans united and formed the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Columbus, Ohio. Today celebrates that event. The Veterans of Foreign Wars work to care for US military personnel who have fought overseas, providing humanitarian aid, training, psychological assistance, and anything else needed as they re-enter American society.

Ballerina Day (1863): September 30

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of the first Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Perinea Legnani, on September 30, 1863. Legnani first gained worldwide recognition in 1893 when, as Cinderella, she performed 32 consecutive fouettes en tournant at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the time of her career, she was considered the best ballet dancer in the world, and her brilliance was in her technique. On Legnani's birthday, Lario Danza International Ballet holds an annual competition for young dancers. The Pierina Legnani Award is given. Only 11 women in history have earned the title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Ms. Legnani died on November 30, 1923, in Italy.

Chewing Gum Day: September 30

Chewing Gum Day celebrates the frustration of all janitors, gum. The practice of chewing a substance goes back to the 1st century AD, when the Greeks, the Mayans, and other civilizations chewed various substances to clean teeth and freshen their breath. By the 18th century, the South American sapodilla tree's milky extract, chicle (think Chiclet's Gum), became chewing gum, what we call latex today. The next incarnation came from John B. Curtis, who developed the original commercial chewing gum, "The State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum," in 1848. It was the gum of a spruce tree. Modern chewing gum originates with William F. Semple, who used a flavored synthetic rubber to help patients strengthen their jaw. A dentist by trade, he filed the patent for his chewing gum on December 28, 1869. Amos Tyler of Toledo, Ohio, filed a similar patent on July 27 of the same year. Semple's patent is the one that reigned.

It looks like you made it! Flu season south of the equator is over for this year. Influenza activity peaks at the end of August in most regions in Australia, with Tasmania and the Northern Territory experiencing a late rise. Meanwhile, Western AU reports increased activity from mid-August through September. Although the World Health Organization has reported that influenza activity has continued to decline in all temperate countries of the southern hemisphere, that doesn't mean people shouldn't take the necessary precautions. Influenza-like illnesses have increased in many European countries.

Ask a Stupid Question is a silly holiday with a purpose created over four decades ago in the United States and has spread across the pond to the United Kingdom and then India. It’s intended to encourage students to ask more questions in the classroom. Today, students are encouraged to speak up and ask questions they would be afraid to ask on some other days. Some schools hold competitions to find the craziest question of the year. American teachers created this event during the 1980s as a way to get their children engaged. It has no official sponsor.
