Residential schools are a shameful part of our history that continue to have a deep and lasting impact on Survivors, their families, and their communities across the country. We cannot forget this truth. As Canadians, we must all learn about the history and legacy of residential schools. Only when we face the hard truths of our past, can we truly move forward together toward a better future. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was joined today by the Executive Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), Stephanie Scott, the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Marc Miller, and Survivors from across the country to raise the Survivors’ Flag on Parliament Hill. This flag will fly in memory of the 150,000 Indigenous children who were forcibly separated from their families and communities to be sent to residential schools. It will honor the Survivors, their families, the communities whose lives were forever changed, and those who never came home. The residential school system in Canada robbed Indigenous children of their childhoods. It attempted to assimilate them, forcing them to abandon their languages, cultures, spiritualities, traditions, and identities. Many suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and many never returned home. The painful legacy of the residential school system lives on today for Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast. The orange and white Survivors’ Flag was designed by the NCTR in consultation with Survivors from across Canada as an expression of remembrance and to be shared with all Canadians. It features nine distinct elements, each with a special meaning. For example, the seeds depicted underneath the family and children represent the spirits of the children who never returned home. We still have work to do. Reconciliation is not the responsibility of Indigenous Peoples – it is the responsibility of all Canadians. It is our responsibility to continue to listen and to learn. The Government of Canada will continue to do just that and support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in their healing journey. Together, we will build a better future for everyone.

According to Putin, Russia's decisions were made despite significant external pressure, including intimidation efforts and what he termed as nationalist-driven attempts to strip them of their cultural and linguistic heritage. He referenced the events of 2014 in Kyiv, criticizing "nationalists and their Western patrons" for instigating a coup and subsequently sparking a large-scale civil conflict. This turmoil, Putin asserted, led to significant hardship in Donbas, including constant shelling and punitive actions. In his speech, Putin passionately spoke of the unity between the Russian people and the residents of the newly incorporated territories. He noted that the recent elections in these regions reaffirmed their commitment to being part of Russia and expressed gratitude towards their contributions to Russia's strength and unity. He also highlighted the ongoing efforts to rebuild and develop these regions, mentioning the construction of schools, hospitals, roads, and cultural sites. Contributions from volunteers, religious and civil organizations, entrepreneurs, and other entities were celebrated as evidence of a united country working in harmony. Looking forward, Putin acknowledged that challenges remain. He voiced his commitment to implementing a comprehensive program for the socioeconomic revival of these historically significant regions. In announcing the new holiday, the Russian President expressed his gratitude to the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republic residents and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. "Thanks to you, your fortitude and determination, Russia has become even stronger," he stated. "We are one people, and together we can overcome anything and meet any challenge." The devastation in Derna followed the collapse of two aging dams, resulting in the rapid release of river water that washed away an entire neighborhood. Online footage shows whole residential areas obliterated, with apartment buildings partially sinking into the mud. Four bridges collapsed, and utilities were wiped out. In its wake, the flood has killed over 5,000 people, with thousands more still missing as of this writing two days later. Derna and the surrounding villages remain largely inaccessible, prompting local leaders to describe the situation as a "catastrophe" and hampering international aid efforts. Despite a population of 100,000, Derna has no hospitals. The region has few public services, and its infrastructure was already in ruins. Add in the ongoing decade-long conflict between two rival federal governments, each supported by their respective militias, and efforts to render aid and get supplies to those that need them are futile. Less than 14 hours later, the quake already claimed over 1,000 lives, making it the most lethal earthquake the North African nation has experienced in over 120 years.
