Atlanta Food and Wine Festival (US-GA): September 12-15

06:20 AM | -
The Atlanta Food and Wine Festival spotlights the culinary diversity of the 13 Southern states from Texas to the Carolinas and beyond, providing a Southern culinary experience like no other. The festival celebrates rich Southern food and beverage traditions and features an impressive roster of chefs, sommeliers, and regional mixologists.

Held in Midtown Atlanta, the annual festival boasts an array of events designed to engage the senses and expand palates. From themed tasting tents and cooking classes to spirited dinners and in-depth seminars, attendees have many ways to explore Southern cuisine.

The festival has a philanthropic angle. Each year, a portion of the proceeds goes to support regional non-profit organizations focused on food and wine education or community enhancement, reinforcing the festival's commitment to giving back to the community. Drawing food enthusiasts, industry professionals, and curious tourists alike, the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival has cemented itself as a premier culinary event in the South.

Whether you are a die-hard foodie or simply interested in expanding your gastronomic horizons, this festival promises a journey through the South's best flavors, making it a must-visit event for anyone passionate about food and drink. First held in 2011, the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival is a staple in the city's fall calendar, drawing food enthusiasts nationwide. Pre-event ticket purchasing and reservations are strongly advised due to the high demand for the festival's limited-capacity events.

Clean up the World Weekend: September 20-22 (est)

06:20 AM | -
International Clean Up the World Weekend occurs on the 3rd weekend of September. Created in 1989 by yachtsman Ian Kiernan of Australia as a way to clean up Sydney Harbor, the event was initially called "Clean up Australia Day." It soon came to the attention of the United Nations. In 1993 the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and "Clean Up the World" was launched. A tremendous success, it is estimated that 35 million people in over 130 countries participate in International Clean up the World Weekend each year. The United Nations Environment Program and World Environment Day (another UN initiative) also support International Clean-up the World Weekend. Media contacts are the same for both events.

COVID-19 Officially the Deadliest Pandemic in US History (2021): September 20

06:20 AM | -
On September 20, 2021, US deaths from the COVID-19 virus officially passed the known death toll from the 1918 Flu pandemic, often referred to as the Spanish Flu. The 1918 - 1920 pandemic claimed 675,000 American lives and an estimated 50 million people globally. COVID-19 has officially claimed over 675,000 American lives, with the vast majority killing those refusing the vaccine between April and September 2021. As of September 20, 2021, 229,811,438 people worldwide have been infected. Of those, 4,713,516 have died. Those numbers are likely conservative due to a shortage of testing supplies globally and deaths not registered as COVID due to death at home or not in a hospital. The United States leads the world in infections and deaths due to political reasons. Nearly 35% of the population doesn’t believe in wearing masks or getting vaccinated, and many from this group do not believe COVID exists. Because of this, deaths and infections continue to rise, particularly in states with Republican governors and dominant evangelical Christian populations. Update: September 1, 2022 The United States has surpassed 96,149,016 recorded infections and over 1,069,748 deaths from COVID-19. Worldwide 607,503,134 infections and 6,492,964 deaths due to COVID have been recorded. Nearly three years since its inception, over 500,000 people become infected and over 1,500 people each day continue to die from COVID-19.

Daylight Savings (IR), Ends: September 20

06:20 AM | -
Daylight Savings Day (DST) in Iran commences in March (Spring Forward) and ends in September (Fall Back). The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember, and it works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres as the seasons. Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time in 1784. Modern DST was established in 1895. Throughout history, several variations ranged from 30 minutes to two hours. Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in the light instead of dark), and saving energy. The closer one lives to the North and South Pole, the longer the period of daylight in the summer months. _______________________ Daylight Savings Above the Equator: United Kingdom, Albania, Adorra, Austria, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guernsey, Holy See, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Kosovo, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Western Sahara: Last Sunday of March: Last Sunday, October United States, Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, Saint Pierre & Miquelon: 2nd Sunday, March; 1st Sunday of November Iran: Begins March 22; Ends September 21 Israel & Palestine: Friday before the last Sunday of March; Last Sunday, October Jordan, Syria: Last Friday, March; Last Friday, October Mexico: 1st Sunday, April; Last Sunday, October _______________________ Daylight Savings Below the Equator: Australia: 1st Sunday in October (Spring Forward ); 1st Sunday in April (Fall Back). PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are unknown until a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Pepperoni Pizza Day, Ntl.: September 20

06:20 AM | -
Pizza is beloved worldwide, but the first pepperoni pizza, the most popular pie, officially appeared on the scene in New Haven, Connecticut's restaurant, The Spot, in 1950. True, it may have existed before this (most likely in New York City). Pepperoni isn't an Italian old-world invention. Instead, it's the Italian-American version of salami and gets its red color from the spice paprika. The sausage first appeared during WWI in the delis of New York City's Little Italy, popularized by soldiers. The pepperoni was affordable to the working class, didn't require special handling, and tended to stay good for some time without refrigeration. National Pepperoni Pizza Day has appeared on the internet over the past decade, and we cannot track the reason for September 20 as the date. However, pizza restaurants have embraced the day nationwide. Because of this, you'll find great deals on pepperoni pizza today, if not for the next week or month. The closest organization to a sponsor is Marco's Old World Pizza. The chain starts its 920 Movement on 9/20 and celebrates Pepperoni Pizza Day through Pizza Month in October with specials.

Punch Day, Ntl.: September 20

06:20 AM | -
National Punch Day honors the five ingredients making up a traditional punch beverage: rum, lemon, sugar, water, and tea. First introduced by British sailors of the East India Company as a beer alternative in the 17h century, the popularity of the punch quickly spread to other countries. The word punch comes from the Hindi word "panch" or "five." The original drink was called "pantsch." Today punch is usually associated with fruit juices blended in a non-alcoholic cocktail or as a flavored sugar drink for children. Best way to celebrate today? Try the original version and take a taste journey back in time.
