RMS Titanic Located (1985): September 1

Today is the anniversary of the discovery of the RMS Titanic wreckage. On September 1, 1985, the wreck of the RMS Titanic was located about 600 km south-southeast of Newfoundland under 3,800 meters of ocean. A French-American expedition team spearheaded by Jean Louis Michel and Robert Ballard discovered the key to finding the Titanic was a remote-controlled machine called Argo. The wreckage has two main parts about 600 meters apart. The stern has deteriorated but is still recognizable. The ship's midsection broke and scattered across the seabed. The debris plane is littered with personal belongings of passengers, furniture, and machinery from the ship. The bow remains relatively intact. Before this discovery, numerous attempts were made to locate the famous wreck. Though located, attempts to bring it to the surface have been unsuccessful due to the advanced fragility of the remains.

Running of the Balls (US-TN): September

The Running of the Balls in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, United States, is an annual month-long fundraiser by Outdoor Gravity Park for charity in May and September. Teams sign up during these months to be chased downhill by a giant manned zorb. One team member rolls down a hill inside a giant transparent inflated ball called a zorb, chasing, knocking, and running over friends and family. It's like the running of the bulls without the horns and injuries, with all proceeds going to support the local food bank. Zorbing traces its origins back to New Zealand, where entrepreneurs Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers launched it as a commercial venture in 1995 after watching hamster balls. They sought a new adrenaline-charged activity that included a unique way to appreciate New Zealand's hilly landscapes. "Zorbing" soon became the generic term for this spherical thrill ride. It involves using an inflatable, transparent, double-sectioned ball, also known as a zorb, with one ball inside the other. The air between the two balls acts as a shock absorber for the rider, cushioning them as they tumble head over heels down a hill. The sport expanded rapidly in New Zealand, followed by international interest. By the early 2000s, zorbing locations emerged in various adventure tourism hotspots worldwide, including Europe, the United States, Australia, and Asia. A water-based version called hydro-zorbing soon appeared. In this rendition, a bucket of water is added to the inner orb, creating a human washing machine experience as the rider sloshes around during the descent. Zorbing has since moved into soccer, bowling, and other sports, with comedic results. The Guinness World Records acknowledged zorbing's popularity in 2006 by noting the longest Zorb ride ever recorded. Steve Camp of Canada rolled down a hill in a zorb for an impressive 570 meters (1,870 ft).

Whether you've made it through high school or achieved a Ph.D., you've probably figured out that education starts after you graduate. People constantly learn, which is as necessary for our health as our quality of life. The first seven days of September each year remind people to learn something new and embrace the unexpected.

Visit your library and find a new topic to discover.

Play the Devil's advocate. Think of a topic for which you are passionate. Some hot-button issues include immigration, abortion, guns, Israel, the death penalty, climate sciences, etc. Now spend the week learning about the other side and their arguments.

Choose a country you've never visited but would like to. Research it and create an action plan to get there one day.

Spend the week at different restaurants representing different cultures (nobody said eating isn't part of learning). You can also do this with beers and wines and explore the world's tastes or music. Choose something new and different to learn.

This week's idea is to expand your knowledge, challenge conventions, and improve your understanding. Have fun with it!

Sewing Month, Ntl.: September

National Sewing Month was created in 1982 via a presidential proclamation to honor sewing as a craft and its contribution to American culture. It was championed by the Sewing and Craft Alliance until 2013 and continues to be acknowledged by suppliers and sewing enthusiasts. Thomas Saint created the first patent for a sewing machine in 1790. His design worked with leather. In 1840 William Newton Wilson discovered in the London Patent Office the drawings of Saint's. He improved the design and created his version. After two years, John Greenough applied for a patent in the United States, but the patent was awarded to Elias Howe, who used a lockstitch design. At this point, Singer already had industrial sewing machines, which he sold on an installment plan to manufacturers. In 1851, he created a much smaller device for home use at a cost the consumer could afford.

National Sickle Cell Awareness Month by the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) is an awareness campaign that targets sickle cell anemia and addresses the disease at the national and local levels. In 1983, the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution designating September as the National Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. Sickle Cell is an inherited blood-based disorder affecting hemoglobin, the characteristic of blood that makes it red. Symptoms include anemia and extreme pain when red blood cells stick together and block blood flow and oxygen in small blood vessels.

Since 2013, the ninth month of the year is when the Real Bread Campaign has gone on a mission to help everyone discover that: life's sweeter with sourdough. The objectives of Sourdough September are: 1) Share the delicious delights of genuine sourdough; 2) Encourage more people to bake genuine sourdough; 3) Celebrate the small, independent bakeries that bake genuine sourdough; 4) Alert people to the issue of sourfaux to help people avoid paying a premium for something that isn't genuine sourdough; 5) Encourage people to join or donate to the Real Bread Campaign. Sourdough first appeared in Egypt around 1500 BC and is the first known fluffy bread (versus flat bread). Egyptians were avid beer brewers, and it's believed the yeast for the beer may have accidentally ended up on the dough waiting to be baked. When the brewer finally went to cook the dough, it had risen. Before sourdough, loaves of bread didn't use yeast. They were flat. 1849 is when sourdough became an institution during the Gold Rush in California. Master bakers from France set up shop in downtown San Francisco and began baking the bread. It traveled well with the miners and became a hit. Sourdough bread's flavor is tangy, and the bread is easily identifiable by its large holes created from the C02 generated from yeast. Sourdough is also the only bread that turns carbs into protein. The fermentation process partially digests the wheat proteins, but not entirely, allowing the bread to be higher in protein. Fermentation is how it gets its tangy flavor.
