Detained & Missing Staff Members, Intl. Day of Solidarity with (1985): March 25

Worldwide Day of Solidarity with Detained & Missing Staff Members draws attention to the plight of civilian and diplomatic workers who were abducted, killed, or detained due to their humanitarian service. March 25 is the anniversary of the 1985 abduction of Alec Collett, a former journalist working for the UN Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). His body was discovered twenty-four years later in Lebanon's Beka'a Valley.

Feast of the Annunciation (C): March 25

A national holiday in Lebanon since 2010, the Feast of the Annunciation celebrates the Christian and Islamic belief that the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and told her she was carrying the Christ Child. March 25 is exactly 9 months from Christmas Day, December 25. The Roman Catholic Church celebrates this feast day yearly, though it may be moved if it falls between Palm Sunday and Easter.

Grain Safety Week, Stand up for, Ntl: March 25-29 (est)

Stand Up for Grain Safety Week is a joint awareness week championed by the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to highlight the dangers to farmers of entering Grain Bins when machinery is active. Several dozen farm workers die yearly or are injured when caught in the quicksand of grain bins, which can cover a man in seconds. This awareness campaign supports the training of first responders and the supply of rescue tubes to departments.

Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act Signed into Law (2010): March 23

March 23, 2010, was the day when the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into Law in the US, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. Its institution split the nation in two. Together with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, this act was the biggest and most significant regulatory overhaul of the US healthcare system since 1965, when Medicare and Medicaid were added. Even with its passage, the United States remains the only advanced economy without universal healthcare and the only advanced economy where getting sick can quickly bankrupt a family.

Purim (J) (365 BC): March 23/24

Purim is a Jewish festival marking events from the Book of Esther. Esther was able to prevent genocide against the Hebrew people in 355 BC. It’s a story about God’s hands being in everything, whether we see it or not. The video “Purim Animated” does an excellent job of explaining the holiday and festivities. Purim is sometimes referred to as the ‘Jewish Halloween’ due to its costumes, food, gifts, and merriment. It is the most colorful of the Jewish holiday celebrations.

Richard Lambert created this holiday in 2014. In his own words, why: "One day in 2014, I googled "National Tamale Day" to discover there wasn't one. I couldn't believe it! More than twelve hundred foods have their own day, even moldy cheese on October 9, yet no tamale day existed. That's what got the ball rolling for me to create a day for everyone to enjoy the wonderfulness of tamales. The recognition of National Tamale Day also seems to be coinciding with the growing public interest. Festivals, special events, and tamale eating contests are popping up everywhere. We list more than 40 festivals and special events across the country that are devoted to tamales. Seven of them were established in the last year alone. Even Oslo, Norway, held its first tamale festival. last year."

Cheesesteak Day, Ntl.: March 24

The cheesesteak is a Philadelphia invention created by Pat Olivieri in the 1930s. In classic Italian fashion, Olivieri grilled rib eye steak and served it on an Italian roll. Olivieri was a hot dog vendor, and this new sandwich spread through the rumor mill of the local cabbies. He added cheese in the 1940s, and traditional toppings include fried onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Olivieri opened up Pat's King of Steaks, and a competitor, Geno, opened up across the street. Today when you visit Philly, the natives will ask, "Are you a Pat's or a Geno's?" You can't visit Philly without having at least one cheesesteak—and on National Cheesecake Day, you'll find quite a few deals. Enjoy!

Chocolate Covered Raisin Day, Ntl.: March 24

Chocolate Covered Raisin Day celebrates the movie house classic. The idea of covering fruits, nuts, and even nougat with chocolate wasn’t possible until the 19th century. The technology needed to separate chocolate from cocoa butter wouldn’t be invented until 1828 by Conrad Van Houten in today’s Netherlands. Without this process, chocolate is a spice, like cinnamon or ginger. Fortunately, the process was developed, and different techniques, including conching, invented by Rudolph Lindt in 1879, would eventually lead to that box of chocolates everyone loves to get. Chocolate Covered Raisins Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor.

Daylight Savings in the European Union commences on the last Sunday of March (Spring Forward) and ends on the last Sunday of October (Fall Back). The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember, and it works in the northern and southern hemispheres as the seasons reverse. On this day, EU nations move the clock one hour ahead at 2 AM in March or one hour back in October at 2 AM on Sunday. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784, and modern DST commenced in 1895.
