Seward's Day Observed: (US-AK)(1867): March 25

Observed on the last Monday in March annually in Alaska, Seward's Day commemorates one of the most outstanding real estate deals ever made. On March 30, 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for a mere $7.2 million! William Seward, Secretary of State for the United States, negotiated the deal, and in 1867, people thought he was crazy. They referred to it as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's Icebox." Seward got the last laugh, though! In 1896 gold was discovered in the Klondike, and 100 years later, in 1967, oil was found on the arctic coast. Seward went down in history as a genius!

Slavery Victims of Transatlantic Trade, Day of Remembrance: March 25

For over 400 years, more than 15 million men, women, and children were the victims of the tragic transatlantic slave trade, one of the darkest chapters in human history. The annual observance of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade serves as an opportunity to honor and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system and to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today. 1793 slavery ended in Haiti. 1833 slavery ended in Canada, the British West Indies, and the Cape of Good Hope. 1843 slavery ended in India. 1848 slavery ended in France. 1853 slavery ended in Argentina. In 1863 slavery ended in Dutch Colonies and became illegal in the United States. 1865 slavery ended in the United States. 1888 slavery ended in Brazil. Selected countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa continued with slavery until the mid-20th Century. Qatar abolished slavery in 1952. Bhutan abolished slavery in 1958. Niger abolished slavery in 1960. Saudi Arabia and North Yemen abolished slavery in 1962, followed by the Trucial States in 1964 and Oman in 1970. The final country to abolish slavery was Mauritania in 1981. However, it did not enforce its laws until 2007.

Kabaddi is a contact team sport that originated in South Asia and is especially popular in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran. The sport involves two teams sending a "raider" into the opponent's half of the court to tag members of the opposing team while chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi," all in one breath. The objective for the defenders is to either evade the raider or tackle them before they can return to their half of the court. The sport is described in various ancient texts, including the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, and traces back over 4,000 years. It is one of the oldest games still in play and is believed to have originated in ancient India. The term "Kabaddi" is derived from the Tamil word "kai-pidi," which means "to hold hands." The sport includes several regional variations, including Sanjeevani, Amar, and Punjabi, with rules and styles differing from one region to another. The basic principle remains the same: two teams send a raider into the opponent's half of the court to tag or touch members of the opposing team while chanting "kabaddi, kabaddi" in a single breath. Kabaddi received international exposure when demonstrated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the Indian National Games in 1938. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity, especially in South Asia, and has become a regular feature in multi-sport events like the Asian Games. World Kabaddi Day seeks to increase the sport's appeal beyond Asia, the United Kingdom, and Canada to the rest of the world. World Kabaddi Day began in 2018 and is celebrated annually on March 24.
