World Theatre Day is the creation of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on March 27 by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which, at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on that year's theme. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau (France) in 1962. What is known as the International Message is translated into more than 20 languages, read for tens of thousands of spectators before performances in theaters throughout the world, and printed in hundreds of daily newspapers. Colleagues in the audio-visual field lend a fraternal hand, with more than a hundred radio and television stations transmitting the message to listeners across the five continents.

Events celebrating the day occur throughout the entire month. It has become one of America’s most vigorous endeavors promoting the positive virtues of sports, athletes, and their positive effect on society.

Black Forest Cake Day, Ntl.: March 28

German Black Forest Cake or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is a layered sponge cake soaked in cherry schnapps, stuffed with whipped cream and whole cherries, and topped with frosting and dark chocolate shavings. It is named black forest for one of its main ingredients, the Morello cherry, which grows in this southwest region. Pastry chef Josef Keller (1887-1981) invented the Black Forest cherry cake in 1915 for his Café Ahrend.

Cat, Respect Your Cat Day (1384): March 28

On March 28, 1384, King Richard II of England issued a decree condemning the eating of cats, and cats in the West have been heaving a sigh of relief ever since! Cats are beneficial for hunting and killing mice and rats, the source of plague in Medieval Europe. By forbidding the eating of cats, King Richard ensured more cats and fewer rats were around. Today we celebrate this anniversary (though technically, it would be 13 days later with the Gregorian Calendar's adoption) on March 28 each year as Respect Your Cat Day.

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers to Lord Ganesha precede the breaking of the fast. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. John Amos Comenius (March 28, 1592 - November 15, 1670) was an educator and theologian born in Moravia who pioneered education. His primary philosophy was that all children should receive an education, a highly progressive idea in Renaissance Europe, where typically only the wealthy received education. He also advocated against corporal punishment in education and wrote several educational texts. Comenius is considered a hero in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. His birth is celebrated each year as Teacher's Day.

Weed Appreciation Day (Plant): March 28

Weed Appreciation Day is about looking at the plants within your yard that aren't wanted. Some are native to the area, and others may be invasive species that rob the soil and steal nutrients. Of the more than 200,000 plant species known to man, approximately 8,000 are classified as weeds. Often, it just depends on where they are as to how they are perceived. For some people, the wild blackberry plant is a weed; for others, it is a valuable fruit. Asparagus was once thought of as a weed until Ziryab (Abu l-Hasan 'Ali Ibn Nafi) introduced it to the court of Andalusia in the eighth century AD as a delicacy and part of a three-course meal (something else he invented). Bamboo is considered a weed for many, but it is also an essential building tool and food in many parts of the world. Watercress is another weed that is now a cash crop. Take a look at what you have in your yard. Perhaps there are ways to work with nature rather than against it, and that is what Weed Appreciation Day is all about!
