Spring Begins (Northern Hemisphere): March 20

The spring equinox in the northern hemisphere marks the first day of spring and the first day of fall in the southern hemisphere. An equinox occurs when the sun passes the earth’s equator, and day and night are virtually equal in length. When Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar in 46 BC, the spring equinox occurred on March 25 due to the slightly longer days of that calendar. Eventually, that date drifted to several different dates depending on the calendars. The spring equinox marks the New Year in the Persian calendar.

Theatre for Children and Young People, World Day of: March 20

World Theatre Day is the creation of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on March 27 by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which, at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on that year's theme. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau (France) in 1962. What is known as the International Message is translated into more than 20 languages, read for tens of thousands of spectators before performances in theaters throughout the world, and printed in hundreds of daily newspapers. Colleagues in the audio-visual field lend a fraternal hand, with more than a hundred radio and television stations transmitting the message to listeners across the five continents.

The annual awards recognize women's outstanding achievements, dedication, determination, and drive globally each year. To be considered, women must have been conducting business online for at least two years. They must have owned their business or held a leadership role for at least two years, participated in cause-related events, mentored other women, and made a difference in others' lives. The Women Rocking the Web Awards provide promotional benefits, increased influence, boosted client confidence, and potentially improved search engine rankings. World Performance Week: March 20-27

ASSITEJ proposes a collaboration between international associations with different art forms related to live performances, which celebrate their World Days between March 20- 27. We invite you to participate in week-long celebrations as part of the very first World Performance Week. The week includes March 20th, ASSITEJ World Day of theatre for children and young people (and the campaign “Take a child to the theatre”), March 21st, UNIMA’s World Puppetry Day, and March 27th, ITI’s World Theatre Day, includes the IATC, IDEA, AITA/IATA and others. To take part, use the unifying logo, the ASSITEJ logo, and the Take a Child to the Theatre Today logo to promote the week. By uniting the activities of these international associations, while retaining the individual character of each day, we hope to strengthen key messages around cultural entitlement connected to the March campaigns, promoting the transformative power of the performing arts for children and adults worldwide, and supporting one another to reach our goals.

Daylight Savings Day in Iran commences March 22 (Spring Forward) and ends September 21 (Fall Back). The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember, and it works in the northern and southern hemispheres as the seasons reverse. On this day, Iran moves the clock one hour ahead at 2 AM on March 22 or one hour back in September 21 at 2 AM. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784, and modern DST commenced in 1895. Throughout history, several variations of daylight savings ranged from 30 minutes to two hours. Only some nations observe DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in daylight rather than darkness), and saving energy. Dia Del Turista (MX): March 21

The first day of spring is Día Del Turista (Day of the Tourist) in Mexico, and it is celebrated predominantly in the northern cities and towns bordering the United States. It’s a day for the vendors in Mexico to thank the snowbirds (Americans who spend the winter months in the Southwestern US and Mexico) who come down during the winter months by offering specials and gifts, including miniature sombrero pins. The event originated in Nuevo Progreso in the late 1970s. It continues to be a much-anticipated event, especially in Southwestern Texas each year.

Forests Day, Intl. Day of: March 21

International Day of the Forests first ran in 2013. From the United Nations: "Forests cover one-third of the Earth's land mass, performing vital functions worldwide. Around 1.6 billion people - including more than 2,000 indigenous cultures - depend on forests for their livelihoods, medicines, fuel, food, and shelter. Forests are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than 80% of the terrestrial species of animals, plants, and insects. Yet despite all of these priceless ecological, economic, social, and health benefits, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate - 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed annually. Deforestation accounts for 12 to 20 percent of the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. The International Day of Forests is held annually on 21 March to raise awareness of the importance of forests to people and their vital role in poverty eradication, environmental sustainability, and food security. Sustainable management of all types of forests are at the heart of unlocking challenges of conflict-affected, developing and developed countries, for the benefit of current and future generations." Fragrance Day, Ntl (UK/US): March 21

The English word "perfume" comes from the Latin term "per fumus," meaning "through the smoke." The name may have something to do with incense, burning dried matter to scent the air, which was and is a part of many religious rituals. Perfume has existed since around 2000 BC, receiving attribution in the book of Exodus in The Bible. Cleopatra, a queen of Egypt, was reported to bathe in aromatic oils. Deodorant and antiperspirants would not exist until the eighth century AD; perfumes often masqued unpleasant smells, chased away evil spirits, or were dabbed on to attract a mate. The first perfume factory is believed to have existed in Cyprus approximately 4000 years ago. During the golden age of Islam (800-1200s AD), perfuming oneself with oud (scented oils) was elevated. The Qur'an instructs men of the Islamic faith to fully bathe each Friday and apply scent if available. When the Qur'an was written in the seventh century, bathing regularly was a luxury for most people. With this instruction, scenting spaces and people became an art. Queen Elizabeth of Hungary, in 1370 AD, had the first modern perfume created by combining alcohol, oils, and fragrance for personal use. The Christian world would need to wait until the Renaissance to discover the potential of the fragrance world. It would arrive through Arabic traders and become an industry through Catherine de Medici in the 16th century. France became the center of scents in the 17th century. A luxury, typically only the wealthy and nobility could afford to purchase perfumes. Americans would create a less expensive version in the 19th century, mixing scents in water and calling it Cologne. Eu de Parfum and Eu de Toilette are additional iterations, with toilette being the lowest quality and concentration of the actual scent. The addition of water makes the scent affordable. National Fragrance Day is observed in the United Kingdom (sponsored there by the Fragrance Foundation) and in the United States (no sponsor). It falls on the most fragrant day of the year, the first day of spring.

French language, French style, French food, French fries, French bread - what is there not to love about anything French? French Bread Day celebrates one of the world's favorite styles of bread. French bread is defined by its lack of fats and strict adherence to old-world craftsmanship, and it uses no fats in its baking. It is simple: flour, yeast, salt, and water. In 1993 the government of France passed the French Bread Law to ensure French bread never includes anything you don't want in it, like preservatives, chemicals, and fat. Celebrate today by picking up a fresh loaf of traditional French bread.
